Robo-Hornets make fourth trip to world championships

Yahoo04-06-2025
HARPURSVILLE, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A local high school robotics team is proving that small rural schools can compete amongst some of the very best youth innovators in the world.
Harpursville High School's acclaimed robotics team, the 'Robo-Hornets,' recently returned home from the VEX Robotics World Championship in Texas.
885 teams from all over the world competed in the three-day tournament.
The Robo-Hornets made it to the Final 16, ultimately losing in the elimination round.
The team qualified for the competition after winning the state title earlier this year.
Kalen Kulas is a freshman at Harpursville High School. This is his first year on the robotics team. He said competing in the world championship was nerve-wracking but also very exciting.
'It was really surprising. At states, I didn't expect to make it to worlds. I was more than happy making it to States. I had a great time there, and right at the end, I figured out I'd be able to go because I won the Excellence Award, and that was crazy,' said Kulas.
This is the fourth year the Robo-Hornets have qualified for the world championships.
Advisor and Coach Bruce Salisbury has been working with the team for ten years. He says he says he is so proud of the students' hard work and dedication that it makes him emotional. He says the kids and their success always come first.
'They constantly work, just their devotion to doing the best that they can. One person at worlds made the announcement that 'You guys are here because we know you give up your weekends, your holidays. The advisors are there late in the hours.' And everybody looked at me and said, 'Yes, that's describing me,' because the kids come first,' said Salisbury.
The Robo-Hornets' record this year was 7-3.
The team is already working on their robots for next year's season.

This overlooked GPT-5 upgrade is my favorite — and even as a power user, it blew me away

When GPT-5 launched, I was ready for sharper reasoning, cleaner code and more natural writing. Like many, I'm still getting used to it and as a Plus subscriber, I find myself going back to GPT-4o often. But the feature that's surprised me most, is one I wasn't even anticipating to change much. The new Voice mode is a huge leap forward,\; so much so that it makes GPT-4 feel outdated after just a few days of using the newer version. The biggest difference is that the new ChatGPT voice actually feels human. GPT-5's new Voice replaces the older, standard Voice Mode with something that sounds, well, alive. No, not in a creepy way; it flows, it empathizes and it adjusts tone and pacing based on the conversation. The flagship model understands emotion and context. If I'm excited, stressed or just chatting casually, it adapts to match my mood. That alone makes conversations feel far more natural and engaging.I've also noticed that it doesn't pause as much if it hears a noise or I set my phone down. It continues the conversation and actually allows me to be hands-free without keeping my face plastered to the screen like I used to do with GPT-4 just so it could understand me. Here's the real surprise: this isn't locked behind a subscription (for now). OpenAI is rolling GPT-5's Voice mode out to all users, including those on the free plan; removing the Plus-only restriction that Advanced Voice Mode had in you're not seeing it yet, log out and log back in again. It should show up soon. This is a subtle change, but one with big implications for accessibility, comfort and everyday use. I use it when I'm running and want to brainstorm with ChatGPT. I've used it while cooking, realizing a recipe calls for an ingredient that I don't have and need help with a substitute. I used to call my mom for this type of thing, now she refers me to ChatGPT. A better voice for everyone is a win for anyone who uses ChatGPT regularly. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. Beyond sound quality and a more human-like voice, the improvements include conversations that are contextually stronger, hold longer and are far more coherent. The AI remembers context better and can maintain memory across sessions. I can come back to ChatGPT-5 in the evening and say "Remember that brainstorm we had at 7 a.m? Let's revisit some of those ideas," and it will seamlessly pick up where we left off (yes, even if we've chatted about dinner or weekend plans in between). Even more impressive, it responds to emotional cues, attempting to calm me if I sound anxious or matching my excitement when I'm energetic about my ideas. In other words, the AI really listens and doesn't just respond. That's the wow factor for me. GPT-4's Voice was functional. GPT-5's Voice feels intentional. GPT-5's Voice mode may not be the headline feature everyone is talking about, but for me, it's the one that makes ChatGPT feel truly alive. Once you've used it, going back to GPT-4's voice feels like stepping into the Tom's Guide on Google News to get our up-to-date news, how-tos, and reviews in your feeds. OpenAI's Sam Altman brings back GPT-4o and boosts GPT-5 limits — but there's a catch

OpenAI's highly anticipated GPT-5 rollout didn't go quite as planned. Just days after making the new model the default for all users, the company is making significant changes in response to an uproar from paying customers; including bringing back the popular GPT-4o model and doubling GPT-5's usage limits. While GPT-5 promised better reasoning, faster performance and advanced multimodal capabilities, many ChatGPT subscribers weren't impressed. Nearly 5,000 Reddit users weighed in on a fast-growing thread, with some calling GPT-5 a 'downgrade' compared to earlier models. Common complaints centered on shorter responses, a more formal tone and stricter message caps. For a segment of users, GPT-4o's conversational style and warmth felt more engaging; and they wanted it back. However, note that free-tier users remain limited to GPT-5 (and its smaller variant once they hit the cap), meaning the only way to access GPT-4o in ChatGPT is by paying for Plus. In a post on X, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman acknowledged the criticism and announced two major changes for Plus subscribers: In another post on X, Altman personally dives into the attachment users feel to GPT-4 and even mentioned that it "makes him feel uneasy." If you have been following the GPT-5 rollout, one thing you might be noticing is how much of an attachment some people have to specific AI models. It feels different and stronger than the kinds of attachment people have had to previous kinds of technology (and so suddenly…August 11, 2025 OpenAI's rapid pivot shows that regardless of an AI model's hyped performance, rolling out too fast can fall flat, especially if it changes the user experience too much. Many subscribers clearly value familiarity, tone and flexibility as much as they value speed or reasoning power. By restoring GPT-4o and loosening GPT-5's restrictions, OpenAI is acknowledging that personalization is as important as raw Tom's Guide on Google News to get our up-to-date news, how-tos, and reviews in your feeds. Watford hope for Chakvetadze return in September

Watford hope Georgia international Giorgi Chakvetadze will finally return to action next month following a frustrating injury lay-off. The Hornets playmaker has not been available since April because of what the club describe as a "complex" bone issue in his foot, the result of "overload and repetitive impacts". Chakvetadze first joined Watford on loan from KAA Gent in the summer of 2023 before making the move permanent and has established himself as one of the best players in the Championship. The club stated the 25-year-old reported early for pre-season training but the injury is in a "slow-healing area". Watford group dynamic will help youngsters - Selvik A statement continued: "A scan in June showed the issue was still present but less severe, so he was phased progressively back into the main group last month and was scheduled to play some part in the friendly win against Deportivo. "However, Chakvetadze reported pain after five sessions and, as a precaution, was re-scanned. "After consultation with industry-leading foot experts, a period of non-impact and work on strength and conditioning only has been advised for six weeks, two of which will be during the first international break." He will have another scan at the end of that period with a view to re-joining the first-team squad if it is all-clear. Chakvetadze has made 78 appearances for Watford - who began the new season with a 1-0 defeat by Charlton Athletic - and has scored three goals.
