UAE a regional leader in fighting hepatitis, with 98% vaccination coverage: Ministry of Health and Prevention
DUBAI (WAM)The UAE Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) has reaffirmed that fighting viral hepatitis is a strategic priority within the country's health policies.As part of the UAE's enduring commitment to strengthening its healthcare system and safeguarding community wellbeing, the UAE has implemented an integrated national programme focused on prevention, early detection, and treatment.Through robust collaboration across public and private health sectors, the programme demonstrates the strength of the country's cross-sectoral health partnerships.The Ministry's remarks were made in conjunction with World Hepatitis Day 2025, observed annually on July 28. This year's theme, 'Hepatitis: Let's Break It Down', highlights the importance of coordinated action and sustained commitment to fighting the disease.It calls for raising public awareness, educating individuals on prevention methods, encouraging regular screening, expanding access to integrated healthcare services, and working toward ending hepatitis as a public health problem by 2030 in line with the global health agenda.Dr. Hussain Abdul Rahman Al Rand, Assistant Undersecretary for the Public Health Sector at MoHAP, emphasised that the Ministry, in close cooperation with other national health authorities, continues to scale up the delivery of high-quality healthcare services by equipping healthcare providers with advanced diagnostic protocols, implementing effective preventive strategies, and broadening the scope of screening and treatment services, guided by international best practices.Dr. Al Rand stated, 'In line with our commitment to achieving the World Health Organisation's goal of eradicating hepatitis by 2030, the UAE has proactively taken key steps since 1991, most notably, the inclusion of the hepatitis B vaccine in the national immunisation programme. Today, vaccination coverage for hepatitis has reached 98%, positioning the UAE as a pioneer in adopting a proactive, prevention-driven approach.'The UAE's comprehensive strategy to combat hepatitis is built around four key pillars: raising community awareness, fostering collaboration across various health sectors and the optimal use of available resources, developing evidence-based health policies, and implementing forward-looking preventive measures. This approach aims to reduce transmission, expand diagnostic and therapeutic services, and ensure timely intervention.As part of its ongoing healthcare reforms, the UAE government has prioritised the continuous development of its legislative and regulatory frameworks to strengthen community resilience.Medical fitness screening protocols have been modernised to include mandatory hepatitis B and C testing for targeted population groups. Vaccination services are also available for specific segments of society, including travellers, healthcare workers, and individuals undergoing premarital and occupational health screenings.On the technology front, the UAE continues to leverage advanced digital solutions to support public health. The enhanced Al Hosn app now features integrated tools for tracking immunisation records for children and other community members, enabling seamless digital documentation and monitoring of vaccination data.
Through adopting world-class health standards, the UAE seeks to build a proactive, sustainable healthcare system aligned with the 'We the UAE 2031' vision and the UAE Centennial 2071.

Since October 2023, 188 people have died from starvation, including 94 children, according to Gaza's Health Ministry. Just this Wednesday, three more people — including a child and an infant — reportedly died of malnutrition.

UAE health ministry completes second phase of adopting ‘Zero Government Bureaucracy'
As part of the UAE government's 'Zero Government Bureaucracy' programme, the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP) said it has successfully restructured a series of key services, reducing their number by 50 per cent. Key elements included streamlining service procedures, reducing documentation, eliminating redundant requirements, and integrating digital systems to reduce the number of smart apps in use. The Ministry also focused on minimising time, cost, and effort for service users while enhancing interoperability with partner entities to facilitate seamless data exchange and faster access to services. A package launched by MoHAP during this phase included licensing and accreditation services for healthcare professionals and facilities, in which they cut the number of services from 32 to just 16. The overhaul has significantly reduced processing times, improved operational efficiency, and strengthened alignment with the programme's overall objectives. To assess the impact of these improvements, MoHAP conducted surveys and user experience studies, and used suggestions from both the internal teams and proactive service users. These efforts align with the programme's target of achieving 100 per cent elimination of digital bureaucracy by providing streamlined, complexity-free services and modernised systems. MoHAP stressed that it's committed to supporting the UAE Government's vision of building a more agile and proactive model, one that anticipates needs, offers innovative solutions, and delivers fast, efficient, and tangible results for every customer. Benefits both citizens and businesses Dr Mohammed Salim Al Olama, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Health and Prevention, said these improvements will meet the expectations of citizens, as well as businesses. 'Our approach aligns perfectly with the government's flexible and forward-looking model for service delivery. It supports sustainable development, strengthens the UAE's global competitiveness, and is built on innovation, stakeholder engagement, and the empowerment of high-performing teams through advanced digital tools and AI integration,' said Dr Al Olama. 'The Ministry achieved remarkable results in the first and second phases of the programme by engaging various segments of society, partners, and internal teams. We adopted a proactive approach to enhance services, streamline procedures, and improve operational efficiency, making them more accessible and user-friendly. Abdullah Ahli, Acting Assistant Undersecretary for the Support Services Sector and Leader of the Zero Government Bureaucracy Team at MoHAP, emphasised the participatory nature of the Ministry's approach. 'Our service redesign efforts align with Phase II of the Zero Government Bureaucracy programme,' Ahli explained. 'We adopted a co-design methodology through workshops that involve stakeholders from the healthcare sector and customers themselves. By analysing the user experience, we ensured the new services are smoother, less costly, and more results-oriented, while eliminating unnecessary procedures and requirements to maximise satisfaction and customer happiness.' Future packages Ahli said the Ministry is in the process of launching additional packages of redesigned services, following the successful completion of the testing phase and user experience assessments. These service packages will include a wider range of priority services. Phase II of the programme aims to achieve 100 per cent zero digital bureaucracy by removing redundant digital steps, minimising the number of smart applications, and upgrading all digital government systems. It also involves the active adoption of artificial intelligence and a fundamental shift in the culture of government work.
