Why anti-terrorism squad arrived after Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez's wedding in Venice — no, it's not due to protests
As per a report by The Guardian, Sánchez packed 27 designer dresses for her wedding with Bezos — but reportedly left with only 26. Her main ceremony gown is safe.
According to Corriere della Sera, the missing garment may have been stolen by someone who gatecrashed Friday night's party. The situation reportedly became so chaotic that Italy's anti-terrorism unit, Digos, was called in to the island.
The couple, now honeymooning in Taormina, Sicily, tied the knot during a three-day celebration on the exclusive island of San Giorgio.
As per The Guardian, sources familiar with the matter confirmed that a dress had indeed vanished, but denied it was stolen. They also denied reports of a dress catching fire, allegedly involving a vintage Dolce & Gabbana piece, or that gatecrashers infiltrated the event.
The couple believes the dress would 'turn up' at some point, so they did not file any formal complaints.
The wedding, said to cost between €40 million and €48 million, featured themed parties and a guest list that included Oprah Winfrey, Orlando Bloom, and Kim Kardashian. Yet, across Venice, anti-Bezos protests intensified, forcing a last-minute change in the location of Saturday's reception.
As per a report, the protest saw activists project the slogan 'No Kings, No Bezos' in green laser across the bell tower at St Mark's Square. Another involved a Bezos mannequin floating along the Grand Canal on an Amazon box holding fake dollars.
Despite the backlash, Venice's mayor defended the event, saying it brought money to the city.
Now in Sicily, the couple are staying at the San Domenico Palace hotel in Taormina, made famous by 'The White Lotus', a television series. Unlike Venice, their arrival has been met with enthusiasm from local leaders.
'Jeff and Lauren, we welcome you with open arms,' said Matteo Francilia, mayor of Furci Siculo, a small town near Messina, The Guardian reported. 'Leave behind the beautiful lagoon with its absurd complaints! Here in Furci Siculo you'll find sun, sea and genuine people, who would welcome you with open arms.'

HC Orders Retrial In Anti-Sikh Riot Case
New Delhi: More than 40 years after the 1984 anti-Sikh riots followed Prime Minister Indira Gandhi's assassination, resulting in brutal killings where the accused walked free, Delhi High Court on Monday ordered retrial in one of the cases. In three other acquittals, HC asked the trial court to "reconstruct" the case records as vital documents, including deposition of witnesses and their statements, are missing. The cases relate to the killing of five Sikhs in the Raj Nagar Part I area in Palam Colony and the burning down of a gurdwara in Raj Nagar Part II, and were lodged at the Delhi Cantt police station. In 2017, HC had reopened these cases after it found that all accused were acquitted by trial courts in 1986, and neither Delhi Police nor CBI appealed. Incidentally, only two of the several accused men are alive. In multiple verdicts, a bench of Justices Subramonium Prasad and Harish Vaidyanathan Shankar ordered the retrial of the accused, Ramji Lal Sharma, and the reconstruction of records in three cases against another accused, Balwan Singh Khokhar. HC also flagged how, in Sharma's case, the trial court in 1986 "committed several manifest errors of law" that resulted in a "miscarriage of justice", and a "grave offence of murder and arson with communal overtones" was neither investigated properly nor "tried in right stead". The court said sufficient efforts were not made to involve all natural witnesses in the probe, including victim Harbhajan Singh's children who were present at the time of the incident, and/or any neighbours in whose house Singh's wife and children took shelter after the mob burnt their house down. On the long delay in victims approaching police, HC pointed out that "a bloodbath took place after the assassination and as a result of the violence, widows, children and persons residing in the vicinity ran away for their safety and took shelter elsewhere, which naturally meant they would not have been readily available for investigation". It said the trial court "failed to factor in the precarious situation and communal tensions which existed in the aftermath of the assassination". Dealing with the other three cases reopened in 2017, HC noted that apart from the shoddy investigation, trial judges "hardly took any steps to ensure the presence of crucial witnesses, including persons who had witnessed the incident", leading to missing material evidence. "Valuable lives have been lost in the incidents which form the subject matter of the present cases. Several crucial witnesses, including eyewitnesses to the incident, were not examined on account of insufficient efforts to secure their presence through service of summons at addresses which had been damaged and/or abandoned by such witnesses in the aftermath of the incident," the court observed. Chhattisgarh police officer faces social boycott over marriage, HC reprimands community
RAIPUR: A distressed Chhattisgarh Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Mekhlendra Pratap Singh facing social boycott from his own community for marrying a woman of his choice, lodged an FIR in his home town Bilaspur claiming that his marriage was performed as per the social tradition. Singh, 35, who hailed from 'Satgarh Tanwar' community (Scheduled Tribe), is posted in Kanker district where he is engaged in the ongoing anti-Maoist operations. He claimed his wife too is from the same tribal caste. The community leaders however got further antagonised after the case was registered against them and approached the high court filing a petition that the FIR was lodged on baseless ground. They also alleged before the court of being harassed by the police with repeated notices served to them. 'Chhattisgarh high court has rebuked the community leaders warning them not to act like a Khap panchayat and dismissed their petition. But the community leaders remain adamant to continue their diktat and my entire family is socially ostracised. They are now threatening us to impose heavy punitive fine', the DSP told TNIE while sharing his mental agony.

BJP counters Congress's missing person complaint against Suresh Gopi, seeks police help to trace Priyanka
A day after the Kerala Students Union (KSU), a Congress affiliate, sought to spotlight Union Minister and Thrissur Lok Sabha MP Suresh Gopi's allegedy high levels of absenteeism from his constituency, by filing a missing person complaint, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) struck back in almost equal measure by moving a similar police petition on Monday to trace the whereabouts of Congress leader and Wayanad MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. The political tit-for-tat manifested in the form of a police complaint by BJP Kerala Scheduled Tribes (ST) Morcha State president Mukundan Palliyara on Monday. Mr. Palliyara told the District Police Chief, Wayanad, that Ms. Vadra had been missing from her constituency since June and seemed unable to discharge her constitutional obligations to the electorate. So far, neither Ms. Vadra nor any Congress leaders have riposted the BJP's campaign. Incommunicado since July 25 However, Mr. Gopi appeared to make light of opposition criticism that he had deserted his electorate in Thrissur and remained mystifyingly traunt and incommunicado since the arrest of two Kerala nuns on charges of human trafficking for conversion to Christianity in Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-ruled Chhattisgarh on July 25. In a somewhat understated Facebook post, Mr. Gopi broadcast the image of him meeting with the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas officials ahead of the discussions in the Rajya Sabha on the Pradhan Mantri Ujwala Yojana. Mr. Gopi appeared reluctant to wade into the controversy and seemed to signal that constitutional obligations and Parliamentary responsibilities constrained him from spending time in Thrissur. However, other senior BJP leaders took up cudgels for Mr. Gopi, who has found himself at the centre of a vortex of accusations of voter list fraud in the 2024 general elections in the Thrissur Lok Sabha constituency. Former BJP State president and the party's core committee member K. Surendran said the Congress and Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] were in denial ever since Mr Gopi's emphatic win from Thrissur helped the party gain a toehold in Kerala's Parliamentary landscape. He said the upset win had stung the ruling front and opposition, prompting them to lay a smokescreen by belatedly quibbling about non-existent voter list cover-ups. Meanwhile, Congress and CPI(M) continued to raise accusations of large-scale voter list manipulation by the BJP in Thrissur in the 2024 general elections. CPI and Congress said they would challenge Mr. Gopi's victory legally and politically and make the 'voter fraud' one of the centre planks of their respective anti-BJP campaigns in the local body polls later in the year.
