D'Tigress AfroBasket champions: Nigeria's female basketball players promised $100,000 cash award and apartment

BBC Newsa day ago
Members of Nigeria's national female basketball team are to receive a cash reward of $100,000 (£75,000) each following their victory at the Fiba Women's AfroBasket Championship over the weekend in Ivory Coast. At a special reception held in honour of the team, known as D'Tigress, Vice-President Kashim Shettima also promised each player a three-bedroom flat.Nigeria defeated Mali 78-64 on Sunday to win a record fifth consecutive AfroBasket title, which also secured them a spot at next year's Fiba Women's World Cup.A similar bonus was promised to the national female football team, the Super Falcons, last month after they won the recent Women's Africa Cup of Nations (Wafcon).
Members of D'Tigress's coaching and technical crew were also promised $50,000 each and a flat."Nigerian women have never failed this nation in sports. From the Super Falcons standing tall on the world stage, to our athletes breaking records on the track, and D'Tigress building a basketball dynasty, our women have consistently made us proud," President Bola Tinubu said in a statement."To all our young people watching today, let the story of D'Tigress remind you that greatness is a product of hard work, discipline, and belief. Nigeria belongs to those who dare to dream and are willing to give their best to make those dreams a reality."There have been been mixed reactions to the promises of cash prizes - with some feeling it is unsustainable considering the country's troubled economy.Though the question on the lips of most Nigerians is: how long will it take for them all to get their rewards?Previous promises like this have taken years to come to fruition. Two months ago, the government finally fulfilled its 31-year-old pledge to give houses to the 1994 Super Eagles football squad after they won the Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia. Some members of that team, including Nigeria's all-time highest goal scorer Rashidi Yekini and then-captain Stephen Keshi, died before receiving the promised reward.

Rwanda agrees to accept up to 250 migrants from the US

Rwanda has agreed to accept up to 250 migrants from the US in a deal agreed with President Donald Trump's administration. The decision makes Rwanda the third African country to agree to accept migrants as part of the United States 's strategy to relocate migrants to countries with which they have no affiliation, in order to remove them from its territory. The East African nation would be able "to approve each individual proposed for resettlement", Rwandan government spokesperson Yolande Makolo said in a statement on Tuesday. Makolo did not provide a timeline for any deportees to arrive in Rwanda and said details were still being worked out. Under the scheme, the deportees would be provided with work training, health care, and accommodation to start their lives in the new country, according to the Rwandan government. The State Department said the US "works with Rwanda on a range of mutual priorities" but did not provide further details on the deportation deal. Last month, the US sent 13 men it described as dangerous criminals who were in the US illegally to South Sudan and Eswatini, saying their home countries refused to take them back. Washington has said it is pursuing additional agreements with African nations. The US has already deported hundreds of Venezuelans and others to Costa Rica, Panama, and El Salvador as part of Donald Trump's efforts to remove people he says entered the country illegally. In March, invoking an 18th century wartime law, the US deported over 200 Venezuelan immigrants to El Salvador, who were immediately sent to a large prison known as the Terrorism Confinement Center, which was originally designed to detain suspected gang members. Human rights groups say they have documented numerous deaths and cases of torture inside the facility. 6:13 Rwanda drew global attention and criticism in 2022 when it agreed to a similar deal with the UK. The controversial deal faced criticism from human rights groups and others, who deemed it unethical and impractical. It was eventually abandoned after the Labour government came into power in 2024. Britain's Supreme Court ruled the agreement illegal, stating Rwanda was not a safe third country for migrants. Rwanda, a relatively small nation with a population of around 15 million, has been notable in Africa for its recovery following the 1994 genocide that claimed over 800,000 lives. Under the leadership of longtime President Paul Kagame, the country has marketed itself as a model of stability and progress. However, human rights organisations accuse the government of harsh and sometimes lethal repression of any perceived opposition to Kagame, who has held power for 25 years. But the country's government has said it is welcoming the migrants from the US "in part because nearly every Rwandan family has experienced the hardships of displacement, and our societal values are founded on reintegration and rehabilitation".

Prince Harry attacks his former charity for invoking memory of Diana

The chairman of the Duke of Sussex's former charity has been accused of acting in the 'poorest possible taste' over a reference to his late mother. Sophie Chandauka vowed to honour the founding mission of the charity Sentebale in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales, after the Charity Commission ruled on Wednesday she could stay in post following a clash which forced the Duke and other trustees to resign. Allies of Prince Harry, who co-founded Sentebale in 2006, condemned her actions, saying his 'life's work' had been destroyed by her 'hostile takeover' of the charity, which they said had been her intention from the start. The Charity Commission issued a report on Wednesday into events at Sentebale, whose mission is to help children with HIV/Aids in Lesotho and Botswana. The Duke and other trustees, including co-founder Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, resigned en masse in March after accusing Ms Chandauka of mismanagement and calling on her to step down. She then claimed to have been a victim of bullying, harassment and misogynoir – discrimination against black women. On Wednesday, she said that the public spat had caused 'incalculable damage' to the charity and laid the blame on 'the unexpected adverse media campaign that was launched by those who resigned'.

Orioles ride 4th-inning surge en route to win over Phillies

August 6 - Trevor Rogers logged six solid innings and Coby Mayo hit a three-run homer to guide the visiting Baltimore Orioles to a 5-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday. Rogers (5-2) struck out six while working around eight hits and a pair of walks for Baltimore, which had dropped the first two games of the series by a combined margin of 18-3. Mayo finished with two hits for the visitors in this one, as did Adley Rutschman. Ranger Suarez (8-5) allowed five runs and nine hits over 6 1/3 innings for Philadelphia, which saw its three-game winning streak come to an end. Trea Turner went 3-for-4 with an RBI in a losing effort. The Phillies failed to inflict much damage against Rogers despite recording at least one hit in every inning he pitched. Perhaps the most pivotal sequence for the Baltimore left-hander came in the third inning, when he struck out Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper after Turner tripled with one out. Riding the momentum from that escape, the Orioles scored four runs against Suarez in the top of the fourth. After Gunnar Henderson and Rutschman reached on singles to open the inning, Jeremiah Jackson laced a double into the left-field corner for his first-career RBI. One pitch later, Mayo launched a changeup from Suarez deep into the left-field seats for his fourth home run of the season. Philadelphia got on the board in the fifth, but Rogers limited the damage. After surrendering a walk and two hits to begin the frame -- including Turner's RBI single -- the southpaw retired Schwarber, Harper and Nick Castellanos to keep the score at 4-1. The hosts threatened again in the sixth, putting two runners on with two outs. But Rogers induced Rafael Marchan into an inning-ending grounder. Suarez allowed a one-out double to Alex Jackson in the seventh, followed by Jackson Holliday's run-scoring single that ended Suarez's night with the scoreboard reading 5-1. Philadelphia again had a scoring opportunity in the seventh, as Turner led off with a double. However, he never moved from second base as Dietrich Enns struck out Schwarber, Harper and Castellanos in succession. Enns fanned two more hitters in the eighth before Keegan Akin took care of things in the ninth. --Field Level Media
