Pick Six: Boise State primed to make another run at Group of Five's auto bid for CFP

Losing a Heisman Trophy finalist, the best defensive player on the team and other key personnel would tamp down expectations for a lot of programs even in this era of quick fixes through the transfer portal. Not Boise State, which brings back more than enough talent to be deemed the favorite to earn the Group of Five's guaranteed College Football Playoff bid a second straight year. Boise State has a second-year starter in quarterback Maddux Madsen, who threw for more than 3,000 yards with 23 touchdowns, and a deep offensive line returning 10 players who started a game. One of Madsen's favorite targets will be Matt Lauter, an All-Mountain West Conference pick whose 47 receptions set a school record for tight ends. The departure of Ashton Jeanty, the Heisman runner-up, creates opportunities for promising running backs Dylan Riley and Sire Gaines. There's a hole on the defensive line without Ahmed Hassanein, the MWC's top defensive draft pick as a sixth-rounder. Edge rusher Jayden Virgin-Morgan and linebacker Marco Notarainni, both All-MWC picks, are back. So are cornerbacks A'Marion McCoy and Jeremiah Earby. The Broncos' early schedule is intriguing: The opener at South Florida is followed by a mid-September trip to Air Force to start Mountain West play. There also is a road game against No. 6 Notre Dame. This is the second year the highest-ranked G5 conference champion will be assured a spot in the playoff. In addition to the Mountain West, the G5s are the American, Conference USA, Mid-American and Sun Belt. Tulane The Green Wave are looking for their fourth straight American Conference championship game appearance, and their 32 wins over the last three seasons are fourth-most nationally. Jon Sumrall brought in 34 transfers after getting dinged hard in the portal. Transfers Jake Retzlaff (BYU) and Brendan Sullivan (Iowa) are battling at QB, and the running back and receiver rooms are full of new faces. The offensive line is perhaps the best in the league, and the defense has quality players at all three levels. The schedule, with a home game against Duke and a trip to Mississippi, is second-toughest among G5 teams. Memphis The Tigers are extremely tough at home, and that's where they play key American games against South Florida, Tulane and Navy and a nonconference game against Arkansas. Nevada transfer Brendon Lewis takes over for four-year starter Seth Henigan at quarterback. As many as nine transfers could start on defense. Returning all-conference D-lineman William Whitlow Jr. is a menace. James Madison The Sun Belt Conference is a crapshoot, but James Madison gets the nod. Coach Bob Chesney was deciding between returning QB Alonza Barnett III, who is coming back from an ACL tear, and UNLV transfer Matt Sluka. Barnett set a school record with seven touchdowns in a 70-50 win over North Carolina and threw just four interceptions over 12 games. The Dukes also have the Sun Belt's top defense. JMU's biggest games are on the road — Louisville and Liberty in nonconference and Texas State, Marshall and Coastal Carolina in the Sun Belt. Toledo Jason Candle, who has never had a losing record in nine-plus seasons as Rockets coach, could have his best team. He retained his best players, added key transfers and the schedule is one of his most manageable in years. The Rockets play four of last year's five bottom teams in the Mid-American Conference and avoid defending champion Ohio in the regular season. Key newcomers are RBs Chip Trayanum (Arizona State, Ohio State and Kentucky) and Trayvon Rudolph (Northern Illinois). They should help bring life to a lethargic rushing game and take pressure off returning QB Tucker Gleason. Liberty Coastal Carolina transfer Ethan Vasko takes over at quarterback following Kaidon Salter's departure for Colorado. Question marks remain at several spots, but the Flames' schedule is one of the easiest among Group of Five teams and they should be back in the Conference USA championship game after faltering late last season. The Flames, who joined the FBS seven years ago, have won at least eight games six straight seasons.

USC football countdown to kickoff—Matt Leinart in focus

The countdown to USC's 2025 football season is officially on! The Trojans kick off their new campaign 11 days from today. You need something to help you while away the days and hours in the spring and summer. This is one way to do so. In this new series, countdown to kickoff, we will be counting down the days by highlighting a notable Trojan who wore each number. Today, we look at USC Heisman Trophy quarterback Matt Leinart. Position: Quarterback Years played at USC: 2001-2005 Career highlights: After redshirting in 2001 and serving as a backup behind Heisman winner Carson Palmer in 2002, Leinart won USC's starting quarterback job as a redshirt sophomore in 2003. His first start came in the road at Auburn, and he threw a touchdown on his first career pass attempt as he led the Trojans to a dominant 23-0 victory. Over the next three years, Leinart led USC to an incredible 37-2 record. The Trojans won the 2003 and 2004 national championships, giving Leinart as many national titles in his college career as losses. In 2005, they came up one game short of winning a third consecutive title, falling to Texas in an instant classic Rose Bowl. Leinart was named a first-team All-American and a Heisman finalist in both 2004 and 2005. In 2004, he won the Heisman Trophy, becoming the second USC quarterback to take home the honor in three years. He finished his time in Cardinal and Gold as USC's all-time leader in touchdown passes and No. 2 in passing yards—although he was later passed by Matt Barkley in both categories. After USC: The Arizona Cardinals selected Leinart with the 10th overall pick in the 2006 NFL Draft. Although he spent seven years in the league, Leinart's NFL career is widely viewed as a disappointment, as he never lived up to the hype that surrounded him coming out of USC. He finished his time in the league with a 57.1 completion percentage and 15 touchdown passes to 21 interceptions while spending time with Arizona, the Houston Texans, and the Arizona Cardinals. Since retiring from football, Leinart has been a regular presence around the Trojans program, serving as a mentor to numerous other USC quarterbacks. He also works as an analyst on Fox Sports's Big Noon Kickoff college football pregame show.

Two of the NFL's worst quarterback situations are resolved … yay

There are few things better in the NFL than a good old-fashioned quarterback battle. Two star signal-callers vying to start at the game's most important position. Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers. Steve Young and Joe Montana. Two men enter, one man leaves. It's Thunderdome. Unless it's Blunderdome, because the quarterbacks vying to start for that NFL team all stink. Advertisement Sadly, that's the state of the quarterback 'battles' fans have been subjected to in 2025. Three craptastic competitions between signal-callers who have as much chance of leading an NFL team to the postseason as Sid Luckman and Otto Graham. Both have been dead for decades. In New Orleans, fans are still waiting to see if the Saints will lose by 30 with Spencer 'Soon to Be Playing in the CFL' Rattler under center or lose by 30 with 36-year-old rookie Tyler Shough calling the shots. OK, he's 26. Fine. I'm sorry. He also had one season with 2,000 passing yards in seven collegiate seasons. And yes, I said seven. However, in recent days the crapetitions in Cleveland and Indianapolis have been resolved. For the Browns, it was a four-way race between Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett and rookies Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders. For the Colts, 2023 fourth overall pick Anthony Richardson was trying to hold off free-agent acquisition Daniel Jones. So, what does it mean for the fantasy value of the players on those teams? Got your blanket? Things are about to get dark. The Cleveland Browns essentially had two choices. See what the franchise had in Pickett, Gabriel and Sanders, or trot out Flacco and win just enough games to screw up their draft slot. So, of course, they went with the geezer, because Cleveland. 'He earned it,' head coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters. 'And I understand with the injuries how that may look. That's really not the case here. Joe performed really well both in practice, in the joint practices, in the meeting room — you name it — in the walk-through. … We have a standard for that position regardless of who's in there. Practice, games, how we operate, what we believe in — we have a very, very high standard. Obviously, Joe having done it at a high level, has done it here as well, that lends itself to confidence in himself and confidence in his teammates.' Advertisement Cleveland has standards? Since when? It's short-sighted, wrong-headed dumba**ery — so, standard operating procedure at the Factory of Sadness. To be completely (whatever) fair, on some level, the decision may have been inevitable, if only because Flacco is the only quarterback who has stayed healthy throughout the summer — largely because he spent the whole time knitting a sweater on the sidelines. It has kittens on it. It may also be temporary — at some point, the Browns will have to see what the young quarterbacks who remain on the roster can do ahead of a 2026 draft in which the team has two first-rounders. But to open the year, it will be Flacco time. Goodie. Pass the vodka. To be clear, Cleveland's offensive line isn't the strength it once was. PFF's Zoltán Buday ranked the unit 27th in the league — a problem for a quarterback who was last mobile approximately never. The Cleveland run game is also a question mark, with second-round rookie Quinshon Judkins still unsigned. This team will face negative game scripts as regularly as the lady in a Metamucil commercial hits the head. Fitting that it's orange and brown. Get it? Orange and brown? You're welcome. And as much as it pains me to say it, if the Browns are going to be playing catch-up and throwing it all over the field, then Flacco is the best option from a fantasy perspective. I feel so dirty now. Pickett has an arm of al dente fettuccine. Gabriel is four and a half feet tall. And, at this point, Mel Kiper Jr. is the only person confident that Sanders is the real deal. Flacco wasn't good last year in Indianapolis — he threw for 103 fewer yards per game than during Cleveland's surprise playoff run in 2023. But the 40-year-old has started 191 games, won a Super Bowl and (gag) is the best arm talent on the team — even at 57. Advertisement Jerry Jeudy did most of the damage during his career year in 2024 with Jameis Winston under center. Locked in as Cleveland's No. 1 wide receiver, Jeudy's WR32 ADP and seventh-round price tag remain a solid fantasy value now. Cedric Tillman is still the same late-round dart throw he always was, but the chances he pays off weren't hurt by Flacco winning the job — Tillman's a vertical receiver. He needed a gunslinger to hit his fantasy ceiling. The biggest winner is tight end David Njoku. From Week 9 on in 2023 (partly with Flacco starting in Cleveland), there wasn't a higher-scoring tight end in fantasy football than the 29-year-old. Njoku is a value at ADP — at least until the Browns make a change under center and ruin everything (again). Remember when the Colts used that top-five pick on Anthony Richardson two years ago? Pepperidge Farm remembers — although Colts general manager Chris Ballard sure as hell wishes he could forget. Hope he rented. May be moving soon. As was already mentioned, the Colts brought in Jones this offseason to compete for the starting job, and on Tuesday, head coach Shane Steichen (who also should freshen up his résumé) told reporters that the seventh-year veteran had won the job — for the entire year. 'He's our starting quarterback for the season,' Steichen said. 'I don't want to have a quick leash on that. I feel confident in his abilities. When they both came in, I made it very clear that this is going to be a battle, and they're going to compete for the job. And like I said, I'm going to make the decision I feel is best for the football team. I think it's everything, right? The operation, the communication in the huddle, the checks, getting guys on the same page. The consistency of all that, obviously, is going to play a big factor in this.' Advertisement It's not exactly surprising. Athletic and strong-armed as Richardson may be, he has one small flaw — the inability to throw a forward pass accurately. He can rip a ball 70 yards on a rope, but he has no earthly idea where it will land. He's a Jugs machine on a trampoline. A completion percentage of 47% isn't getting it done in the Arena League, let alone the NFL. Still, it's a damning indictment that this was never really a competition — because 'Danny Nickels' (he's half-price now) isn't good either. Jones' playoff run as a rookie seems like a mirage — a fever dream born of late-night White Castles and Rumple Minze. He has completed 64.1% of his career passes and has a plus-23 touchdown to interception ratio, but he's also 20 games under .500 as a starter and has a career passer rating under 85. There's a reason why every dynasty manager with a share of a Colts player not named Anthony Richardson was rooting for Jones here — and it rhymes with 'Richardson no throw ball good.' Of course, Jones ain't Dan Marino. Or Dan Fouts. Or Dan Conner. There were 16 quarterbacks in the NFL last year who averaged over 7.0 air yards per attempt — including Derek freaking Carr. Care to guess how many times Jones has hit that benchmark? Zero. Nada. Never. That lack of downfield passing isn't great news for Alec Pierce — he's not averaging 22-plus yards a catch again in 2025. It's also not ideal for Josh Downs, although his ability to rack up yards after the catch might help mitigate things somewhat. It's also not exactly party time for Colts running back Jonathan Taylor, who should see no shortage of eight-man fronts until Jones shows he can make opponents pay for stacking the box. That's not really news, though. We knew the Colts would have bad quarterback play in 2025. We just didn't know if it would be Jones' wormburners or Richardson throwing to 18-foot-tall targets. Advertisement Gonna be a fun year. Wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. and rookie tight end Tyler Warren are the biggest beneficiaries. Both have an ADP outside the top 100. Both should see plenty of short and intermediate routes over the middle of the field. And if Jones has any success this season, that's where it will happen.
