Palestinian-American beaten to death by Israeli settlers in occupied West Bank, another man shot dead, health ministry says
Twenty-year-old Sayfollah Musallet 'was martyred after being severely beaten all over his body by settlers in the town of Sinjil, north of Ramallah,' the health ministry said in a statement on Friday.
The municipality of Sinjel said that Musallet died following a 'barbaric attack' carried out by settlers as part of 'daily assaults' on local residents. It alleged Israeli forces stormed the area at the same time as the settlers' attack, obstructing the work of paramedics and volunteers.
A friend of the deceased man's family told CNN he was with Musallet and took him to a hospital in Ramallah, adding the young man was an American citizen born in Tampa, Florida.
Israel's military said it was 'aware of reports regarding a Palestinian civilian killed and a number of injured Palestinians as a result of the confrontation, and they are being looked into by the ISA [Israeli Security Agency] and Israel Police.'
Musallet's family is demanding the US State Department lead an investigation into the incident.
'We are devastated that our beloved Sayfollah Musallet (nicknamed Saif) was brutally beaten to death by Israeli settlers while he was protecting his family's land from settlers who were attempting to steal it,' the family said in a statement.
'We demand justice.'
The US State Department said in a statement to CNN that it is aware of reports of the death of an American in the West Bank, without providing a name.
'Out of respect for the privacy of the family and loved ones during this difficult time, we have no further comment,' a department spokesperson said.
Musallet ran a business in Tampa and had been in the West Bank since June 4 to visit family and friends, the family statement said.
A second Palestinian man died in the attack in Sinjel after he was shot in the chest by settlers, the Palestinian Ministry of Health said. Ten others were wounded in the same attack, it added.
Following the attacks, the Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs criticised what it called Israel's expanding settlement projects in the occupied territory and called for urgent action to hold the perpetrators of settler violence accountable.
Israel has recently ramped up military operations in the West Bank, displacing tens of thousands of Palestinians and razing entire communities as it targets what it says are militants operating in the territory.
Multiple American citizens have been killed in the West Bank in the past few years, according to Palestinian officials and eyewitnesses, including a 14-year-old boy whom the Israeli military shot dead last April in what they described as a 'counterterrorism operation.'
Israeli soldiers also shot dead a 26-year-old woman during a protest against an Israeli settlement in September 2024.

With headlines like that, is it any wonder why Americans are out demonstrating against Israel, Bob Vylan is chanting 'Death to the IDF,' and why antisemitism is surging everywhere? Whether or not the headlines are accurate, distorted, or completely false, they serve the purpose of demonizing Israel, intentionally or not. The first story refers to the weekend clashes in the West Bank, north of Ramallah. The facts are sketchy, and the report relies on the Palestinian Health Ministry and wire service stringers in the territories. The latter headline is another in the ongoing assault by the IDF against Hamas in Gaza that has been taking place since October 8, 2023. It also relies on the Gaza Health Ministry (aka Hamas) as a source. As the Post stated in its editorial on Sunday, 'The problem is not merely rhetorical – it's structural. Western media relies heavily on local stringers, often in Gaza, with ties to Hamas-controlled ministries. Fact-checking becomes impossible in war zones, and unverified casualty figures are often published uncritically. Headlines blame Israel for bombings before investigations can conclude; retractions, when they come, are buried deep in the digital dust.' What the two stories share is that two days later, there has been no clarification, denial, explanation, or version presented by any official Israeli body – not the government, the police, nor the IDF. Owning up to our mistakes When we do something wrong, we should own up to it and be transparent. But when there's an explanation as to why a Palestinian-American was beaten to death by settlers (were they defending themselves?) or why children were killed in an IAF air raid in Gaza, there needs to be a follow-up. It won't be any help to the slanted headlines that the readers already saw – that ship has sailed on the sea of public opinion portraying Israel as the bloodthirsty aggressor. But it will help in laying out the facts and setting the record straight. If we do nothing, it looks like we're covering up atrocities, or just as bad, feigning indifference. Headlines and stories that rely only on one side's version of the events that took place are inevitable. Israeli settlers accused of killing 117 sheep in West Bank attack By Ali Sawafta JORDAN VALLEY, West Bank (Reuters) -Palestinian Bedouins accused Israeli settlers on Friday of killing 117 sheep in an overnight attack and stealing hundreds of others in an apparent effort to chase farmers off their land in the occupied West Bank. The incident comes amid what the United Nations described this week as intensifying attacks by Jewish settlers and security forces against Palestinians in the West Bank and record mass displacements. The Israeli army did not respond to a request for comment about the mass slaughter of the animals belonging to the Arab al-Kaabaneh Bedouin community, in the Jordan Valley. Veterinarians were called in to treat a handful of sheep which had survived the knife and gun attack, some of the animals shaking uncontrollably and in apparent shock. Salem Salman Mujahed, a resident of Arab al-Kaabaneh, said multiple groups of settlers working in coordination had orchestrated the assault, and accused the army of standing by. "(Settlers) came near the houses. I asked them what are you doing here then we started fighting with each other," he said. "The army detained me, and they handcuffed me." He said other groups of settlers then attacked the sheep, which are vital to his community's survival. Reuters was unable to independently verify who was responsible for the attack. Palestinian Minister Moayad Shaaban condemned the incident, calling it part of a broader strategy to displace Palestinians from the region. "These sheep and animals were slaughtered and shot at," he told Reuters. "They are using these tools to terrify these people to leave these areas, which have been inhabited for dozens of years." MOVING AWAY The attack prompted at least one family to begin relocating. Bedouin Tareq Kaabaneh said he could no longer withstand what he called settler intimidation. "They were armed, they steal donkeys and sheep. In the night they come here and start shooting toward us," Kaabaneh said. "I am moving now from here, I want to protect my kids and my sheep, my livelihood ... yesterday I was safe, but I don't know what will happen to me tomorrow," he added. The United Nations reported this week that mass displacements in the West Bank had reached levels unprecedented since Israel first took military control of the territory nearly six decades ago. The U.N. Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Geneva also said there had been 757 settler attacks on Palestinians or their properties since January - a 13% increase from the same period last year. At least 964 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli forces and settlers in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, since the start of the war in Gaza in October 2023. Over the same period, 53 Israelis have been killed in attacks by Palestinians or in armed clashes. Palestinian child shot dead in West Bank by Israeli forces amid land grabs
Israeli forces have shot and killed a Palestinian child in the occupied West Bank amid more violent raids by soldiers and settlers, and as Israeli authorities position to confiscate more land. Local Palestinian sources reported on Friday that 13-year-old Amr Ali Qabha was hit with live ammunition in a street in Yabad, located south of Jenin, and was denied medical treatment as soldiers prevented ambulances from reaching him. Qabha's father also tried to reach him, but was severely beaten and detained by Israeli soldiers, according to the Wafa news agency, which said the child was pronounced dead at the hospital after an ambulance was finally able to get him there. More than 1,000 Palestinians have been killed across the occupied West Bank since Israel's war on Gaza began on October 7, 2023. Of that figure, at least 204 were children. The United Nations humanitarian office (OCHA) said on Friday that at least 14 Palestinian deaths and 355 injuries were recorded in the West Bank last month, while there were at least 129 Israeli settler attacks resulting in Palestinian casualties or property damage. According to OCHA figures, between the beginning of 2024 and the end of June 2025, more than 2,200 Israeli settler attacks were reported, resulting in more than 5,200 Palestinian injuries. In that same period, nearly 36,000 Palestinians were forcibly displaced across the West Bank due to Israeli military operations, settler violence or home demolitions carried out by the Israeli government. Ongoing raids and harassment The deadly incident on Friday came as Israeli soldiers continued their raids across the occupied territory that were accompanied by arrests, and assisted settlers in their attacks aimed at driving Palestinians from their lands. In Jenin's village of Raba, Israeli forces fired tear gas at Palestinians, including children, who were protesting against the confiscation of their land and property. In the town of Dura, located south of Hebron, five Palestinians were detained after a raid that included the ransacking of several homes. Six more were arrested in Qalqiliya's village of Kafr Laqif, with another two taken from the village of Sir in the same district. A Palestinian man was arrested in Bethlehem after being summoned by Israeli intelligence to the Gush Etzion settlement. Two people were taken during a raid on Nablus, with one shot and wounded before his arrest. Another arrest was reported in the Askar refugee camp. In the village of Umm Safa near Ramallah, Israeli soldiers destroyed a main water pipeline, which left about 1,000 residents without water. In the neighbourhood of Beit Hanina in occupied East Jerusalem, families living in a residential building were forced to leave in preparation for the demolition of their homes. The Palestinian families were among those forced to demolish the buildings themselves after an order by Israeli authorities, because the municipality would fine them more if it demolishes the building. Armed Israeli settlers launched a violent attack earlier on Friday in the village of al-Malih in the northern Jordan Valley, located northeast of the occupied territory. They killed at least 117 sheep belonging to Palestinians, stole more livestock and vandalised tents and other property, according to Wafa. Israel's plan to divide future Palestinian state Israeli authorities are planning to illegally confiscate more Palestinian land as well, despite international criticism. The United Kingdom on Friday opposed Israel's announcement of its intention to renew plans for construction in the E1 area in the occupied West Bank, a move that would split the Palestinian territory. 'The UK strongly opposes the announcement by the central planning bureau of Israel's Civil Administration to reintroduce the E1 settlement plan, frozen since 2021,' said a Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office spokesperson. The plan would include the construction of more than 3,000 houses to the east of Jerusalem, dividing a future Palestinian state in two, read the statement, and 'marking a flagrant breach of international law'. US Democratic Senators Bernie Sanders, Peter Welch, Jeff Merkley and Chris Van Hollen issued a joint statement on Friday condemning Israel's longstanding plan to destroy and force out Palestinian communities in Masafer Yatta, in the South Hebron Hills. Amid frequent attacks by settlers and troops in the area, Israeli authorities are advancing with plans to turn the Masafer Yatta area into an 'open fire' zone for their military.
