Eddie Howe ‘confident' of keeping ‘irreplaceable' Alexander Isak at Newcastle
Eddie Howe is 'desperate' for 'irreplaceable' Alexander Isak to stay at Newcastle United and is confident that he will, even if the head coach admitted he could offer no guarantees about the future of any player. Isak was left out of Newcastle's squad for their 4-0 pre-season friendly defeat at Celtic on Saturday, despite being fit, with Howe insisting the decision was led by the need to manage the 25-year-old's fitness. Advertisement Yet, unlike Joelinton, whose minutes are also being managed and watched from the stands at Celtic Park, Howe made the call to send Isak home due to 'the speculation' and 'scrutiny' around the striker's future. Liverpool have communicated their interest in signing Isak this summer, but Arne Slot's side are in negotiations with Eintracht Frankfurt for Hugo Ekitike, who had also been targeted by Newcastle. Howe insisted there has been 'no formal approach' for Isak this summer, and says everyone at the club is 'desperate' to keep the Sweden international. 'Absolutely,' Howe said. 'There is no one who feels any differently – from board to staff to players. We value his qualities, as a person, so it's very strong. 'I'd say we have a few of those players that are irreplaceable. Your top players are so hard to find, so hard to recruit, so hard to develop and make them into those players. 'When you have them, you have to treasure them, and we and the staff recognise his talent and his ability. Of course, we're desperate to keep him part of our team.' Asked directly if Isak would still be a Newcastle player come the start of the season, Howe said: 'I think it's difficult for me to ever give 100 per cent clarity on any player. 'I'd never do that because it's football and you never know what could happen. 'All I can say is that Alex is happy at Newcastle. He loves the players that he plays with, the staff, the team. I've never had any issue with him, other than really enjoying seeing his talent and seeing him express himself. 'Certainly, I'm confident that he's going to be here at the start of the season.' Addressing the absences of Isak and Joelinton against Celtic, Howe added: 'Both players are fit, but we just felt they weren't ready to play. 'Everyone through pre-season goes through challenges. Joe is coming back from a long injury, so we have to make sure that when he's introduced, he's ready. Alex has trained this week and is fine, but we didn't want to take the risk with him.' Advertisement Isak, though, did not travel from Newcastle's five-day training camp in Austria to Glasgow, as Joelinton did. 'No (you shouldn't read anything into Isak not being here), it's purely the last thing Alex wants if he is not playing is to be sat in the stand, being under that scrutiny,' Howe said. 'I don't that's fair to the player so if he wasn't going to play today, which we agreed, which we mutually agreed that he needs a little bit more training time, then it's best he's not here. 'For any player, that is not an easy thing to deal with. 'It's not an easy thing to understand when you're fielding, no doubt from his perspective, phone calls, text messages, players and people asking him… because the media now is so strong and the media message goes far and wide and that scrutiny in part, that's 10 per cent of the reason why he wasn't here because I just want him to focus on himself and his training ready for next week.' Howe also did not deny that he has held discussions with Isak regarding his future during the off-season, but stressed he does so with all players and that the Swede has been focused in training. 'I have conversations with I'd say 100 per cent of the players and their futures,' he said. 'I'm very communicative with them, so whether that's at the end of the season, whether that's during pre-season so yes, I've had discussions with him but that's not abnormal. 'I respect a player's career and how short it is. All the time I will be communicating my desires and wishes to them and what I see and try to help them. 'Alex has been really good, he's trained really well so far this season so I know there will be lots of noise round it and I can't really control that but from inside he's been really good.' Newcastle travel to Singapore and South Korea for a pre-season tour later this week and Howe 'absolutely' expects Isak to head to East Asia and be involved in friendlies against Arsenal, a K-League Select XI and Tottenham Hotspur. Advertisement Although Newcastle are trying to bring in a goalkeeper, centre-back and forward, Howe admitted that Newcastle have 'missed out on our targets to other clubs on several occasions' so far this summer and, as things stand, it does not seem as if any further additions are imminent. Anthony Elanga is their only senior signing and he made his debut as a half-time substitute against Celtic. 'We wanted more and from my perspective going into pre-season you want your squad together from the first day to work on everything you need to work on,' Howe said. 'I'm confident we will try our very, very best to do it. Beyond that I've got no guarantees.'
