The SKOCH Awards, among India's most prestigious independent honours, acknowledged MEPMA's innovative, inclusive, and impactful initiatives that have significantly improved the lives of vulnerable urban communities.
Of the 14 projects submitted by MEPMA, nine were selected for Platinum honours following a rigorous evaluation process comprising peer review, board assessment, public voting, and expert panel scrutiny.
The recognition is seen as a milestone in Andhra Pradesh's commitment to inclusive urban development, especially in empowering self-help groups (SHGs), urban homeless, street vendors, and marginalised occupational communities.
The awarded projects span a wide range of focus areas including housing for the urban homeless, financial inclusion of SHG members, digital livelihood tracking, e-commerce for women entrepreneurs, skill development, gig economy participation, and structured support for street vendors and vulnerable groups.
MEPMA's strategic and community-driven approach has emerged as a model for other states to follow.
Mission Director N Tej Bharath credited the leadership of Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu and Municipal Adminstration and Urban Development (MA&UD) Minister P Narayana for their support, and thanked Principal Secretary S Suresh Kumar and CM's Secretary Pradyumna for their guidance.
The SKOCH Awards will be officially presented during the SKOCH Summit in New Delhi on September 20, 2025.

Tirumala women left out of ‘Stree Shakti' free bus scheme
Tirupati: While the just-launched 'Stree Shakti' free bus scheme has brought cheers among crores of women folk across the state, the joy is missing for about 2,600 women residents of Tirumala, who feel dejected as the state govt has excluded Tirumala-Tirupati ghat road travel from the ambit of the free bus scheme. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now Under the free bus scheme, which was launched by chief minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu on Aug 15, women, girls, and transgenders can travel free of cost across the state in five select categories of APSRTC buses including Palle Velugu, Ultra Palle Velugu, city ordinary, metro express, and express. The scheme also covers all ghat road sections, with a rider to not overcrowd the bus and ensure comfortable seating for all. However, the only ghat road taken off from the ambit of the Stree Shakti scheme happens to be the Tirumala-Tirupati section in the state, a decision which has deprived about 2,600 women residents of Tirumala to take advantage of the initiative. Tirupati district public transport officer M Jagadish said the state govt's orders excluded Sapthagiri express buses from the ambit of the 'Stree Shakti' scheme. "As all buses plying on the twin ghat roads happen to be Sapthagiri express buses or AC electric buses, implementation of free bus service for women does not apply here," he told STOI. According to APSRTC officials, about 377 Sapthagiri buses and 64 AC electric buses make around 1,350 trips to ferry between 60,000 to 80,000 passengers between Tirumala and Tirupati daily. Nearly half of them are women passengers. The technicality aside, the 2,600 women folk at Tirumala, who travel to Tirupati and back frequently, feel dejected for being left out of the free bus scheme. A Pankajakshi, a Jana Sena woman activist and a resident of Tirumala, said the free bus travel scheme for women was one of the 'super six' promises made by the TDP-Jana Sena-BJP alliance in the run-up to the 2024 elections. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now "While the NDA govt has fulfilled its promise by implementing the free bus scheme which will benefit nearly 2.6 crore women in the state, the scheme should also cover the 2,600 odd women residents of Tirumala. There are many students who need to travel from Tirumala to Tirupati for their studies and other women who frequent Tirupati daily. The govt should take their concerns into account," Pankajakshi appealed. Transport minister Mandipalli Ramprasad Reddy told STOI that the govt will "definitely explore" the options to extend the facility to women residents of Tirumala. "The govt is committed to ensure that not a single woman is left out from the ambit of this initiative. We will look into this," he said.
