Tips to handle allergy season

Yahoo04-04-2025

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — If you've been experiencing heavy allergy symptoms recently, you are not alone as the season is here.
Joy Whitt is a Nurse Practitioner at Sycamore Pain and Wellness. She said seasonal allergies occur between February and May here in Indiana.
Symptoms include itchy eyes, runny nose, and a light cough.
Whitt said prevention methods are difficult because, this time of year, pollen is in the air.
However, there are solutions if you are currently experiencing allergies.
'Some of those things could be saline nasal spray', Whitt said. 'They can use those a couple times a day to clear out those sinuses. You can use large volume nasal irrigation. That would be more like a Netty Pot. There's also over the counter steroid sprays, nasal steroid sprays. Those are Fluticasone or Mometasone.'
Whitt said, beyond those options, if seasonal allergies are still affecting you, visit your local clinic.

Ascension St. Vincent donates backpacks to Clay students

BRAZIL, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — School may be out for summer break, but a local hospital is doing its part to ensure the next school year gets off to a great start. With help from community donations and employee fundraisers, Ascension St. Vincent in Clay County provides backpacks full of school supplies for students as part of their Backpack Program. Students in the Clay Community Schools can sign up for the program and receive a backpack later this summer. Best deals on back-to-school essentials for K-12 The hospital expects to give out over 200 backpacks this summer. 'We have a mixture of kids that come up, they are super excited cause they might have got their favorite color backpack. We really try to specialize the backpack, you know, we put a lot of thought into it for each kid,' said Executive Assistant Emily Staley. When filling the backpacks with supplies, the hospital looks at the school supply list for each grade in the school system. That way, students have exactly what they need for the school year. It's also an opportunity for the hospital to give back to the community. Back to school bus safety tips 'It's an engagement for the community, not just in healthcare, but for the community itself. It's just the way to ease the burden for parents and grandparents and or guardians so that they don't have to endure the full cost of school supplies,' said Supervisor of Supply Chain Jessica Lundy. The hospital said sign-up sheets for the program need to be completed and turned in by June 20. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Alabama hemp businesses bracing for impact with crackdown weeks away

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WIAT) — Hemp companies in Alabama said they are working hard to abide by new state regulations. Those regulations will take effect in the form of a new law July 1. Hemp companies said it will kill small businesses, while the sponsor said it's long overdue. 'They're kind of pulling the rug out from under us and going backwards in the industry,' said Blake Gamberi, owner of Dry Creek Wellness in Glencoe. 'I'm sorry to those folks who it's going to be negatively affecting for sure,' said Carmelo Parasiliti, owner of Green Acres Organic Pharms in Florence. The crackdown caps THC levels to 10 milligrams per serving in a product and bans it for people under 21. The original bill sponsor, state Rep. Andy Whitt, R-Harvest, said gas stations have become pharmacies for some people. 'Anytime that you have to reach between the motor oil and the beef jerky to get a product that you're going to smoke and/or take to medicate or get high, that is not good for the state of Alabama,' Whitt said. Gamberi said the new law is confusing, but they are working to get their products in compliance. 'We got high hopes that they'll get everything in line and make it where we don't have to close our doors …,' Gamberi said. 'It's a very short time period to adjust something that you've done over four or five years, even longer than that.' Parasiliti said they are keeping their doors open but moving some of their business to other states. 'It's a lot of work ahead of us, but we're going to keep going and keep trying,' Parasiliti said. Alabama Department of Public Health determines there are no active measles cases in the state David Beck, owner of The Humble Hemp Shack in Gadsden, said it will probably have to close down altogether. 'It's a very scary feeling, and a scary feeling for our customers as well,' Beck said. Whitt said those customers will now be able to get a product that is safely tested by a third party. He said the law does not legalize marijuana but does not ban hemp products. 'It was time to get these products under control for the safety of our citizens and the safety of our kids and get a handle on it,' Whitt said. 'It lets there be an authority that can actually oversee this product.' Whitt said that authority, the Alabama Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, will soon release guidelines for businesses on how it will enforce the law. Products outlined in the law will be banned July 1. Whitt said businesses will be able to start the licensing process to sell hemp products with the ABC Board in January. Catholic Charities holding summer fundraisers

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) — Catholic Charities is a local organization that helps food insecure individuals get the help they need. This summer, they are hosting a number of fundraising events to help with that cause, that they say they need now more than ever. A recent study by Feeding America shows that people in West Central Indiana are struggling. Jennifer Tames is the Assistant Agency Director for Catholic Charities. She said the results of the study show Vigo County has a problem. 'Vigo County ranks the fourth highest in the percentage of food insecure individuals across the state of Indiana and the third highest in the percentage of children who are food insecure', Tames said. To help this issue, Catholic Charities is holding two upcoming fundraisers. The first, the Quick Quack Trail Run. 'It's not a road race where people are looking to get their best time. It's a race that is going to be taking place at Griffin Bike Park on June 21st', Tames said. 'We're using the bike trails there that include things like a water bridge over a pond, moguls, hills, and just all sorts of fun parts of running a trail.' Another event this summer is the Rubber Duck Regatta. Jessica Murphy, Development Manager for Catholic Charities, said residents can adopt a duck for a chance at a cash prize. 'On the 4th of July, you'll have an opportunity to win $10,000 through the Rubber Duck Regatta', Murphy said. 'Misco, our good friends, release upwards of 15,000 rubber ducks at Fairbanks Park. The winning duck is chosen at random.' Both events will raise money for Catholic Charities to help food insecure individuals in the local community. 'We know that our community members step up every time we ask and we appreciate that because we can't provide the services of Catholic Charities without the community coming together to provide the funds for that', Tames said. 'This is a great way, not only to provide the funds, but also have fun yourself.' To learn more information or be involved in the Quick Quack Trail Run, you can visit their website here.
