Sandakan crackdown nets 238 illegals

By: Winnie Kasmir Text Size: Some of the illegal immigrants detained in Sandakan. SANDAKAN: A 12-hour large-scale immigration crackdown saw 238 undocumented migrants detained here early Wednesday. Sabah Immigration Department Director Datuk Sh Sitti Saleha Habib Yussof said a total of 480 individuals were screened during the operation which began around 1.30am and ended before noon. The integrated operation, codenamed 'Ops Sapu' and 'Ops Mahir', targeted squatter settlements, construction sites and wood-processing factories at four hotspots, including Batu 8 and Batu 10 settlements. The operation involved 71 officers from the Sandakan, Tawau, Lahad Datu and Kota Kinabalu districts, as well as the department's enforcement division. 'The 238 people detained comprise 88 adult men, 88 adult women, 30 boys and 32 girls,' she said. They were detained for not possessing valid documents under Section 6(1)(c) of the Immigration Act 1959/63, overstaying under Section 15(1)(c), misuse of passes under Section 39(b) and employing undocumented migrants under Section 55B, among other offences. Of that number, 6,058 individuals have been deported to their countries of origin, while 53 employers have been prosecuted. 'We remind employers in Sabah to cooperate by ensuring that their workers have valid travel documents before hiring them, especially in factories or the construction sector, to avoid facing legal action,' said Sitti. She said such enforcement operations will continue in districts, including Semporna, Kota Kinabalu, Tawau and Sandakan, to uphold immigration laws across the State. She warned that action will be taken against employers and premises owners found hiring undocumented foreigners or individuals violating the conditions of their passes. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said noted that the amendments were introduced to the Penal Code (Amendment) Act 2025 (Act A1750), which was approved by the King on Feb 25 this year and gazetted on March 7. 'These amendments provide for offences related to harassment, threats, bullying, insults and misuse of identity information, including situations that may lead to suicide attempts as well as cases where the person provoked attempts or commits suicide,' she said in a statement here today. She said offenders are liable to imprisonment for a term that may be extended up to 10 years, and a fine or both. '…it is the responsibility of every citizen to study and comply with these laws that are now in effect,' she said. Sarawak Immigration nabs 10 undocumented Indonesians at Penrissen Camp

KUCHING (Aug 11): The Sarawak Immigration Department detained 10 Indonesians without valid travel documents during an operation at Penrissen Camp, 8th Mile, this morning. In a statement, the department said the arrests were made during 'Ops Serkap' at around 8.30am, targeting the parking area near Solahuddin Al-Ayubi Mosque following public complaints and intelligence gathering. 'A total of 11 individuals were inspected during the raid. Investigations revealed that 10 of them were undocumented Indonesian migrants. 'They were detained under the Immigration Act 1959/63 for various offenses, which include entering Malaysia without a valid pass (Section 6(1)(c)) and overstaying the permitted duration (Section 15(1)(c)). 'Additionally, a 46-year-old Malaysian man was also arrested and is being investigated under Section 55E of the same Act for allegedly harboring or employing undocumented migrants,' the department said, adding that all detainees were taken to Kuching Immigration Office for further investigation. Thailand to compensate 2 Malaysians set on fire by man in Bangkok

(X pics) PETALING JAYA: The Thai government will provide up to 550,000 baht (about RM72,000) in compensation to each of the two Malaysian tourists who were set on fire by an unemployed man in Bangkok last Thursday. Thailand's tourism and sports ministry said the Malaysians' medical expenses will be reimbursed up to a maximum of 500,000 baht, Bernama reported. The ministry's permanent secretary, Natreeya Taweewong, said the condition of the two victims – Gan Xiao Zhen, 27, and Ong Yik Leong, 26 – had improved significantly, with Gan now able to communicate through writing.
