On this day: Flintshire adoption scandal told in documentary

Rhyl Journal9 hours ago
Alan and Judith Kilshaw, who lived in Buckley at the time, made headlines on both sides of the Atlantic in 2000 when they paid £8,200 to adopt twin baby girls from a young American mother, Tranda.
The scandal involved the single mother allegedly selling her twins to two different couples for cash - once to another couple in the US, before snatching them back to be sold to a different couple in the UK, Alan and Judith.
The twins, Kiara and Keyara, were initially placed with new parents Vickie and Richard who lived in California - who it's alleged paid £4,000 for the children.
Alan and Judith, who already had four children, travelled to the US to meet Tranda who had sold the twins to them after reportedly snatching them away from Vickie and Richard.
The Buckley couple, who believed they had adopted the twins, renamed them Belinda and Kimberley.
A custody battle then began between the two couples, with the twins eventually being given to a different family entirely back in the US.
Events surrounding what's come to be known as the 'cash for babies' scandal were covered in the Prime Video documentary Three Mothers, Two Babies and a Scandal in 2022.
But this time last year, a Channel 5 documentary launched to bring the gripping tale back to life.
'The Baby Scandal That Shocked The World' was released in July 2024.
It revisits the heart-breaking case from the perspective of the women involved - the birth mother and the two adoptive mothers.
The documentary synopsis reads: "The story of the internet adoptions of twin babies by two separate families on two different continents, and the transatlantic custody battle and media storm that ensued.
"The programme revisits the custody case for the twin girls through each of the mothers' eyes, Tranda, the birth mother; Vickie, the American adoptive mother and Judith, the Welsh adoptive mother."
This story was first reported on by Arron Evans on July 20, 2024.

Sue and Noel Radford's naughty sex confession after pumping out 22 kids

Sue and Noel Radford, parents to 22 children, gave fans a rare insight into their sex life as they admit to struggling to make time for intimacy amidst their brood Sue and Noel Radford have made a cheeky confession about their sex life. ‌ The couple, parents to an astonishing 22 children, have spent the last three decades steadily expanding their family. ‌ Sue, now 50, welcomed her first child, Chris, when she was just 13 years old, and gave birth to her youngest in 2020 - 36 years later. ‌ These days, with such a huge family to care for, Sue and Noel's schedule is packed, leaving them little downtime for themselves. Despite living in their spacious 10-bedroom mansion in Morecambe, the house is always buzzing with their lively kids running around. ‌ In a previous episode of their show 22 Kids and Counting, viewers got a rare glimpse into the couple's private life. When Sue began working on her memoir to document the Radford family story for future generations, Noel initially joked, 'When Sue said she wanted to write a book, I thought she must be mad - what's there to read about?' During filming, their ghostwriter Paddy asked a cheeky question about their intimacy. 'Is your sex life today the same as it ever was?' ‌ Sue admitted with a laugh, 'I think we prefer sleep now, don't we?' Noel agreed, 'Yeah.' Paddy quipped, 'That's a great story right there.' Right now, the Radfords are busy managing the chaos of having all their kids home for the school holidays. Since their television debut in 2012, the Radfords have captured the hearts of viewers nationwide and have consistently kept their fans in the loop about their growing family via social media. ‌ Noel recently revealed how he gets the children to pitch in with chores during this hectic time. On last week's Channel 5 episode, he explained, 'To get the kids to help, I just come up with a little plan.' ‌ He added, 'Make it a game, and they all jump in.' Noel challenged them: 'Whoever puts the most items in the dishwasher wins.' The kids scrambled eagerly around the kitchen, loading bowls and plates. Nine-year-old Hallie collected four items, while some younger children helped wash dishes. Noel teased them, 'Are you rinsing or actually washing?' They replied confidently, 'Washing!' ‌ Fourteen-year-old Tillie stacked three items, and Noel noted, 'Bonnie's really going for it!' Four-year-old Heidie proudly claimed she'd collected 'seven million' items, prompting Noel to declare, 'Looks like Heidie's our clear winner!' Beaming at how quickly the kids jumped in, Noel said, 'That was done really fast, guys.'

Alan Titchmarsh's expletive one-word response to 'terrifying' Royal experience

Alan Titchmarsh has shared his terrifying experience of training with the Royal military, saying it was the 'biggest rush' of his life - but left him unable to speak Veteran broadcaster and beloved gardening expert Alan Titchmarsh has shared the pulse-racing moment he was invited to join a high-speed Royal military training exercise - an event that left him gasping for air, lost for words, and on the verge of swearing. In a frank discussion on the Talk Horse podcast, Alan reminisced about being asked to present two Royal-themed TV shows, All the Queen's Horses and All the Queen's Men. During the filming, he had the opportunity to ride alongside the Household Cavalry and the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery - experiences he found both thrilling and daunting. Alan first mounted a horse called Waterford, which the Queen's groom Terry Pendry warned was particularly challenging. "Waterford? He's got five legs," Pendry quipped, hinting at the horse's unpredictable nature. Adding to the challenge, Alan had to ride in boots sans spurs, unlike his soldier counterparts, which he admits felt somewhat embarrassing. However, it was his stint with the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery that really put his mettle to the test, reports Gloucestershire Live. During a practice session near Wormwood Scrubs, Alan was unexpectedly asked to join one of the gun carriage teams. Despite initial hesitation, he accepted the challenge. Perched atop a horse named Mango - which he humorously suggested might reduce him to "chutney" - he assumed his role in the central pair, tasked with guiding a hefty gun carriage through intricate manoeuvres known as "the scissors," involving high-speed crisscrossing of horses and wheels. "It started off all right," he reminisced. "We were trotting, then into a canter, and then a gallop. I'm thinking - and I'm sorry about this - but you know that word we use that begins with 'sh' and ends with 't'." In a particularly tense moment, Titchmarsh lost his stirrups but, against the odds, remained mounted, flawlessly completing the routine. "We did the whole kit and caboodle, and I didn't come off," he remarked. "My heart must have been coming out here somewhere." The military veterans present were taken aback by his performance. "The outriding sergeant turned to Bombardier Floyd - I'll never forget her name - and they looked at each other and said, 'We don't normally go that fast.'" Alan's memorable day continued as he rode from Wormwood Scrubs to St John's Wood at a rising trot, forming part of an impressive six-horse procession that brought traffic to a standstill with its clinking harnesses and rumbling wheels. "It was the biggest thrill... certainly the biggest rush of my life," he confessed. "I got to the end, and I couldn't speak. It was just the most wonderful experience." However, the experience wasn't without its physical repercussions. "Then I had three months at the osteopath," he quipped, chuckling at the memory. Love Your Weekend with Alan Titchmarsh is set to make a comeback on Sunday, July 20, featuring guests Selina Scott, Pixie Lott, and Tom Parker-Bowles.

Then in 2000, Bubka landed a job with talkSPORT, bringing his iconic New York tones to the UK sport radio station. And his standing in golf saw him respected and revered by all. That included two of the greatest golfers of all time - Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. Nicklaus was made an honourary citizen of St Andrews in 2022 and personally invited his dear friend Bubka to be there. And even the notoriously private Woods went out of his way to greet Bubka at The Open that year, seeking him out after a press conference after the iconic broadcaster travelled to the event despite poor health. Rubert Bell of talkSPORT paid an emotional tribute to his great friend and colleague. Bell said: 'Radio is about voice. There is no doubt when you heard Bob Bubka speak, it just grabbed you. 'Unmistakable, iconic, coupled with a wonderful, unique style. For over 25 years, his distinctive American tones enthralled and entertained talkSPORT listeners. 'His love for the game of golf shone through, coupled with a cheeky, almost rebellious element which made him not only a delight to listen to - but in my case - to work with. Baffled Rory McIlroy hits TWO balls with ONE shot in incredible never-seen-before incident at The Open 'Bob was unashamedly biased when it came to Tiger Woods - in awe of his achievements - particularly as he had been brought up in the Nicklaus and Arnold Palmer era. It was a testament to Bob that Tiger always seemed to reach out and say hello. 'In later years, Bob's health made it difficult to travel and his last Open in situ was at St Andrews in 2022. 'He loved being there - and the relish in which he drove his motorised wheelchair around the city was fantastic. 'But what he also loved was the interaction with talkSPORT listeners - and I know in the end, being part of the talkSPORT family was so important to him as he struggled with ill health. 'Even when physically frail, that voice never faltered. Covering the majors will never be the same without that delicious voice drawing us into the magnificent sport of golf.' Others in the golfing world took to social media to post their messages and memories. Mike Parry said: "I'm really saddened to hear of the death of my great pal and legendary golf commentator Bob Bubka. "He was THE best with an incomparably silky voice and unparalleled knowledge of the game. I worked six Opens with him. Joyous professional days... RIP Big Man." Jonathan Norman added: "After marvelling at his voice and broadcasting style for a decade, it was one of my career highs to work with Bob at the 2014 Ryder Cup. "He will be missed greatly. Thoughts with Janice and all Bob's family and friends. RIP." Another wrote: "RIP Bob Bubka….. the voice of golf." And a final user wrote: "Ahhh such sad news. RIP Bob Bubka, the voice of golf. Could listen to him all day."
