'Lilo & Stich' teamed with Tom Cruise for a monster Memorial Day box office weekend.
Disney's live action version of 'Lilo & Stich' earned a staggering $145.5 million in North American theaters, according to studio estimates Sunday, the second biggest domestic opening of the year after 'A Minecraft Movie.'
The movie is a faithful remake of the 2002 original's story of a six-legged alien and a Hawaiian girl that has created a big cult following in the decades since.
Paramount Pictures' 'Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning,' the eighth and (probably) last appearance of Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt in a nearly three-decade run, was a distant second domestically, but still brought in a franchise record $63 million through Sunday, out-earning 'Mission Impossible: Fallout,' which opened domestically to $61 million in 2018.
And the spy thriller with Christopher McQuarrie directing for the first time in the franchise was the top global earner with $127 million," with 'Lilo & Stich' bringing in $111 million.
The previous film, 2023's 'Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One' launched with a franchise-best $80 million over five days in a July opening, though it came in shy of industry expectations with a $56.2 million haul over a three-day weekend.

Taicca and Gobelins Paris Announce Partnership at Annecy to ‘Nurture Original Stories from Taiwan': ‘Dream Bigger and Reach Further'

Taiwan Creative Content Agency (Taicca) has announced a strategic partnership with animation school Gobelins Paris at Annecy's film-TV market MIFA. As shared with the audience, the new collaboration aims to 'cultivate animation talents from Taiwan, support the development of original IPs for children and young adults, and strengthen Taiwan's connections with the global animation industry.' The workshop will cover storytelling, visual development, character and world design, as well as pitching strategies. Cecile Blondel, director of international development at Gobelins Paris, noted that 'Taiwanese creators offer fresh, compelling ideas, though turning them into strong visual stories can be challenging.' The workshop will hopefully 'bridge the gap.' 'We're excited to join forces with one of the world's top animation schools to nurture original stories from Taiwan,' added Taicca's Deputy CEO Alice Chang. 'Through this partnership, we hope to empower our creators with the skills, networks, and confidence to dream bigger and reach further.' On the same day, Taicca also introduced new projects during its Taiwan Spotlight pitching session at Annecy's MIFA market. That included 'Wacky Tidy Pals,' directed by Redic Hsu and produced by Mixcode, introducing four characters embarking on an adventure – and solving mysteries – when a mysterious natural force disrupts the village. Liao Tai-Yu's 'Puringau' sees a young girl, Akay, trying to protect the forest. Gifted with ancestral witchcraft, but feared by those she vows to help, she finds herself caught between suspicion and belief. The show about 'forgotten God,' produced by MK Origin Studio, is rooted in the myths of Taiwan's indigenous peoples, it was revealed. 'Blue Runners,' adapted from the award-winning novel and directed by Huang Shih-Ming, follows an ex-athlete and a teenager struggling with depression, who gradually breaks out of isolation through long-distance running. Stepmotion Pictures is on board. In 'Bliss: Beyond the Edge of Time,' the audience is granted an unflinching look into the future, where 'the cold precision of technology collides with the fragile essence of humanity.' As five distinct stories unfold, creators wonder: In a future when memories can be erased, identities rewritten and fate engineered, what remains truly ours? Finally, Erik Lee's 'Tag' claims – rather controversially – that life only truly begins after death. As a mother and son reunite in the underworld, they confront a path of redemption through existence. And the titular 'tag'? It's a system of 'spiritual substitution' orchestrated by an enigmatic medium. Go Go Studios produce. Disney finally owns all of Hulu, ending long tug-of-war with Comcast

Walt Disney Co. has agreed to pay Comcast Corp. an additional $438.7 million to finalize the Mouse House purchase of streaming service Hulu. Disney in December 2023 initially paid Comcast $8.6 billion for NBCUniversal's one-third stake in the streaming service. The final payment, announced Monday, brings the total amount the Burbank entertainment giant will ultimately pay Comcast for its stake to $9.2 billion. This week's agreement came after an extended appraisal process as the two companies struggled over Hulu's actual value. The platform that is home to "The Handmaid's Tale" and "Only Murders in the Building" appears to be worth about $27.5 billion. The resolution also represents a major step in Disney's years-long pivot to streaming. "We are pleased this is finally resolved," Disney Chief Executive Bob Iger said in a statement, acknowledging Disney's productive partnership with the Philadelphia-based company. "Completing the Hulu acquisition paves the way for a deeper and more seamless integration of Hulu's general entertainment content with Disney+ and, soon, with ESPN's direct-to-consumer product, providing an unrivaled value proposition for consumers," Iger said. The two companies have had tense relations since Comcast launched a failed hostile takeover of Disney in 2004. Tensions flared again seven years ago after Comcast jumped into Disney's bidding process for Rupert Murdoch's entertainment assets, substantially driving up the price for Disney. Disney prevailed. It gained the majority stake in Hulu as part of its $71 billion acquisition of much of Murdoch's company in April 2019. That spring, Disney and Comcast negotiated a pact that outlined the governance of the service while it was jointly owned by the two companies and also provided a blueprint to dissolve their partnership. At the time, they agreed that Hulu would be valued at no less than $27.5 billion, making Comcast's stake worth at least $8.6 billion. Comcast's divestiture process began two years ago when Chief Executive Brian Roberts signaled that his company wanted out. The parties then entered into an appraisal process to find a value for Hulu. Disney noted the $438.7 million payment was substantially less than what Comcast had wanted. The deal is expected to close by July 24. Hulu launched as an NBCUniversal and Fox joint venture in 2008. Disney joined the following year as an equity owner. "Hulu was a great start for us in streaming that generated nearly $10 billion in proceeds for Comcast and created an important audience for NBCUniversal's world-class content," Comcast said in a statement Monday. "We wish Disney well with Hulu and appreciate the cooperative way our teams managed the partnership." Copyright (C) 2025, Tribune Content Agency, LLC.
