Hartlepool nuclear plant given more time to carry out work

BBC Newsa day ago
An improvement notice issued to a nuclear power station after a scaffolder was injured by a defective light fitting has been extended.Hartlepool nuclear power station operator EDF has been given extra time to carry out improvements after receiving the notice from the Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) in May.The ONR said a worker had been injured by a defective light fitting in February.EDF said it was developing a "specific training package" to minimise the risk of incidents.
The ONR said the extension would allow the plant to complete the work which it expects to rollout in the summer. It had previously said the accident had occurred even though EDF had identified the defective light in October 2024.It said EDF had not correctly assessed the health and safety risks with the light at the time. The watchdog said it would continue to monitor the plant's progress in line with the notice, which is now due on 15 August. The station opened in 1983 and has two advanced gas-cooled reactors capable of powering 1.4m homes.Last year it was announced the site would continue to operate for an extra year until 2027.

Lake District landscape charity launches litter survey

A landscape charity has launched an online survey in an effort to get a clearer idea about the scale of littering and illegal camping in a national of the Lake District said it wanted to find out whether people living in the area think the problem is becoming more findings of the questionnaire will be used by the organisation to campaign for measures such as more frequent visits to hotspots by rangers, tougher action against anyone found to be responsible for leaving a mess and more effective prevention roadsides and lake shores are among the areas commonly seeing problems, it says. The group said people leaving rubbish behind, as well as those camping without the landowner's permission, "seems to have grown as a problem" in recent added it comes "in the wake of a slew of social media videos of influencers sharing their experiences" in the area without sharing how to visit responsibly and follow the Countryside Code" – a set of guidelines aimed at protecting the role of influencers has been in the spotlight and in May the Lake District National Park Authority announced it would pay some to help discourage people from fly camping and littering. Wildfire risk Kay Andrews, the organisation's engagement lead said: "The lasting effects of leaving rubbish in the landscape aren't just visual."Litter can kill wildlife and livestock, damage soils, leach into water systems and cause health hazards, while barbecues and fires can easily cause wildfires in summer."When people act in such a thoughtless manner, it ruins the enjoyment of the beautiful countryside of the Lake District for other visitors and causes affected communities stress and upset".Posts about the Lake District are incredibly popular on platforms such as Instagram, with about 6.4m tags for the location used, compared to 2.4m for the Peak District and 1.9m for Northumberland. Blackpool: Person 250m out to sea rescued by lifeboat crew

A person "in distress" about 820ft (250m) from the shore has been rescued from the sea by a lifeboat Blackpool said it received a report of concern for a person's safety in the water opposite the Viking Hotel on South Promenade, Blackpool, shortly after 05:30 BST. The lifeboat charity said it was the fifth call out this week but the "most serious".The volunteer crews gave the casualty immediate care before handing them to the care of the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) when they returned to shore. The RNLI said it had a report of a second person possibly in the sea in a similar location and a second lifeboat was launched. But the alert was a false alarm.
