Kenya hands over Nyayo Stadium to CHAN LOC as tournament nears
With just over two weeks to go before the start of the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024, Kenya's Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports has officially handed over the Nyayo National Stadium to the tournament's Local Organising Committee (LOC).
The stadium, situated in the capital Nairobi, is one of the primary venues for the continental showpiece and will host six key fixtures—including selected Group A matches and the decisive Group C clash between Algeria and Nigeria.
The handover marks a major milestone in Kenya's preparations as co-host, alongside Tanzania and Uganda, for the 2–30 August competition dedicated exclusively to home-based players.
Cabinet Secretary for Sports, Mr Salim Mvurya, confirmed that the upgrades to the stadium have met all the requirements set out by CAF following a series of rigorous inspections.
'We have ensured that everything is in place and now the facility is ready to be handed over to the LOC,' Mvurya stated.
'This is done, and the next focus now is to get Kenyans to rally behind the Harambee Stars and demonstrate our passion, commitment and patriotism as a nation.
"We expect to have lots of visitors as well coming in and this will be a good tourism boost for our country.'
The extensive renovations at Nyayo and the nearby Kasarani Stadium were supervised by the Kenya Defense Forces to guarantee international standards.
Speaking at the handover, Cabinet Secretary for Defense, Ms Soipan Tuya, lauded the effort.
'The Ministry of Defense is very proud that we have successfully overseen the world-class renovation of these two stadia. We have built facilities to the standards required,' she said.
In addition to the match venues, the Ministry also officially handed over two training grounds—Ulinzi Sports Complex and Police Sacco Stadium—which will serve as vital preparation bases for participating teams.
As Kenya inches closer to hosting its first-ever CHAN, the completed infrastructure is a clear signal of the country's readiness to deliver a successful and memorable tournament.

Guinea international star Serhou Guirassy has boosted the morale of the Syli Local squad with a passionate visit to their training base in Kindia, just days before the team departed for Morocco to continue preparations for the TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024. Odong's championship mindset lifts Uganda in CHAN 2024 build-up
Fresh from helping SC Villa clinch the 2023/24 Uganda Premier League title, defender Arnold Odong is now channeling that same intensity into Uganda's preparations for the upcoming TotalEnergies African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024. Odong, who played a pivotal role for SC Villa last season with 24 appearances, believes the high-intensity training camp underway at the FUFA Technical Centre in Kisasi is sharpening the Cranes for what promises to be a fiercely competitive tournament. The camp is part of the team's final build-up to the continental event, which is reserved for players plying their trade in their home countries. 'The first week of camp has not been easy,' Odong admitted. 'The intensity has increased, training has become tougher, but it's good for us. We appreciate it because it's going to help us perform better as a team in the coming games. Our coaches believe a lot in hard work, and that's exactly what it takes to compete.' Under the watchful eye of co-coaches Morley Byekwaso and Fred Muhumuza, Uganda's locally-based stars have embraced the demands of the residential camp, blending tactical drills with physical conditioning. 'Moving with the team during AFCON qualification gave me a lot of experience,' he said. 'I got to play with top players, learned from them, and understood how the national team operates. That same style of play is now being used for CHAN, so I come in with a bit of insight I can share with the squad to help us work better together.' Placed in a tricky Group C alongside Algeria, South Africa, Guinea and Niger, Uganda will need every ounce of grit, unity, and tactical clarity to progress. 'We're home and we need to give it our all,' Odong added. 'We need to work really hard to get out of the group and go far in the tournament.' With Odong's blend of leadership, league-winning experience and international exposure, the Cranes may well have the defensive backbone needed to make a strong CHAN 2024 run.
