Coimbatore woman arrested for Dubai-based businessman's murder
Sharadha Shanmugam, 32, a resident of FCI Colony at Gandhi Maa Nagar in the city, was arrested by Saravanampatti police from the city for murdering D. Sigamani, 47, a native of Puliyanthoppu in Thanjavur.
According to police, Sharadha, who was working as a receptionist in Dubai, was allegedly involved in an affair with Sigamani, who ran a travel firm. The two were also involved in financial dealings, which in turn led to disputes between them. Sharadha had also complained to her parents that he was torturing her.
Sharadha, her stepfather T. Thiyagarajan, 69, mother Gomathi, 52, sister S. Neela, 33, plotted to murder Sigamani with assistance from Puthiyavan alias Kutti Thangam, a henchman from Tirunelveli, and his relative P. Swathi, 26, the investigators found out.
Sigamani arrived at Coimbatore International Airport on April 22 from Abu Dhabi, allegedly after being invited by Sharadha, who also reached the city from Dubai. Sharadha and Thiyagarajan took him to their residence at Gandhi Maa Nagar, where he was served food and drinks laced with sedatives on April 24, police said. He was allegedly murdered that night, and his body was taken to Karur and dumped in an isolated place falling under K. Paramathi Police Station limits.
Meanwhile, Sigamani's wife launched a complaint that her husband had not reached home after arriving in Coimbatore from Abu Dhabi. Peelamedu Police in Coimbatore launched an investigation, and upon learning that Sigamani was received by Sharadha and Thiyagrajan upon his arrival in Coimbatore, launched a search for them. Sharadha, however, had returned to Dubai. Sigamani's relatives, who saw her on April 25, began to suspect her role in the disappearance. She returned to Coimbatore on April 30.
Police questioned Thiyagarajan, an accused in the murder of Sharadha's husband, Gunavel, in 2018, and he confessed to the murder. A detailed interrogation revealed the roles of all six accused, said the police, who arrested Thiyagarajan on May 1 and four others on May 2. Sharadha, who was absconding since her return, was arrested on Sunday.
Sigamani's body, which was buried as that of an unidentified man after a post-mortem at Palamapuram burial ground in Karur, was exhumed on Saturday and a second post-mortem was performed on the remains.

Suicide prank triggers Meta alert, sends Kaushambi cops into a tizzy
Prayagraj: Kaushambi police went into a tizzy on Monday evening after the Meta Inc flashed an alert about a 20-year-old youth planning to commit suicide by consuming pesticide in the city. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now However, when the police tracked him down, it turned out to be a prank. SP (Kaushambi) Rajesh Kumar told TOI that Meta's global monitoring system flagged a Instagram post from the youth in Pipri police station limits. He uploaded a video message saying 'aaj raat is zahar ko piyunga aur kahani khatam meri' (I will consume this poison tonight and end my life), showing a wrapper of a pesticide cover. Meta immediately sent an alert email to the UP police social media centre in Lucknow. Taking cognisance, the state police social media cell provided all details to Kaushambi police, and subsequently, SP (Kaushambi) issued instructions to trace and rescue the individual. Based on the mobile number and geolocation provided by Meta, the cops searched the location and alerted concerned thana cops to take action. Within 10 minutes, a team of Pipri police rushed to the youth's residence in Gauhar Ali Ka Purwa Mazra. The youth, a graduate and currently working for a Maharashtra-based company, told police that it was just a prank. He said he had on Monday afternoon gone to his father's rice field, where he spotted his father spraying pesticide. He then picked up the cover of the pesticide bottle and decided to upload the video on Instagram. With the help of family members, sub-inspector AK Pandey counselled the youth, who promised not to repeat the act in future. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The youth's family expressed gratitude to cops for their swift and humane action. It may be noted that under the collaborative system in place between Meta and Uttar Pradesh Police since 2022, any suicide-related post made on Facebook or Instagram triggers an email and call alert to UP Police. Govindan issues legal notice to biz man over allegations of letter leak
1 2 3 T'puram: CPM state secretary M V Govindan has sent a legal notice to Muhammed Sharshad, a Chennai-based Keralite businessman, who accused his son Syamjith of leaking a letter Sharshad had written to the party's politburo against another businessman. The legal notice stated that Sharshad's wanton allegations were intended to damage Govindan's prestige. It said Govindan was deeply concerned, aggrieved and prejudiced by Sharshad's false and baseless statements, wherein he recklessly imputed corrupt practices and alleged misuse of political status, credibility and responsibility against Govindan. It mentioned that the letter, which Sharshad claimed to have been leaked using Govindan's influence, was circulating on social media and was released by Sharshad himself. The notice also reminded him of a letter he wrote to the CPM on May 17, 2024, in which Sharshad sought an apology for his allegations against Govindan. The notice demanded that Sharshad withdraw the allegations against Govindan within three days of receiving the notice publicly. It required him to publish a statement withdrawing the allegations through the same forums, desist from repeating such allegations and remove his allegations from social media. If Sharshad fails to do so, Govindan would be forced to initiate legal actions, it warned. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
