Coimbatore woman arrested for Dubai-based businessman's murder

The Hindu04-05-2025

The police on Sunday arrested a woman from Coimbatore in connection with the murder of a Dubai-based businessman at her residence in the city on April 24.
Sharadha Shanmugam, 32, a resident of FCI Colony at Gandhi Maa Nagar in the city, was arrested by Saravanampatti police from the city for murdering D. Sigamani, 47, a native of Puliyanthoppu in Thanjavur.
According to police, Sharadha, who was working as a receptionist in Dubai, was allegedly involved in an affair with Sigamani, who ran a travel firm. The two were also involved in financial dealings, which in turn led to disputes between them. Sharadha had also complained to her parents that he was torturing her.
Sharadha, her stepfather T. Thiyagarajan, 69, mother Gomathi, 52, sister S. Neela, 33, plotted to murder Sigamani with assistance from Puthiyavan alias Kutti Thangam, a henchman from Tirunelveli, and his relative P. Swathi, 26, the investigators found out.
Sigamani arrived at Coimbatore International Airport on April 22 from Abu Dhabi, allegedly after being invited by Sharadha, who also reached the city from Dubai. Sharadha and Thiyagarajan took him to their residence at Gandhi Maa Nagar, where he was served food and drinks laced with sedatives on April 24, police said. He was allegedly murdered that night, and his body was taken to Karur and dumped in an isolated place falling under K. Paramathi Police Station limits.
Meanwhile, Sigamani's wife launched a complaint that her husband had not reached home after arriving in Coimbatore from Abu Dhabi. Peelamedu Police in Coimbatore launched an investigation, and upon learning that Sigamani was received by Sharadha and Thiyagrajan upon his arrival in Coimbatore, launched a search for them. Sharadha, however, had returned to Dubai. Sigamani's relatives, who saw her on April 25, began to suspect her role in the disappearance. She returned to Coimbatore on April 30.
Police questioned Thiyagarajan, an accused in the murder of Sharadha's husband, Gunavel, in 2018, and he confessed to the murder. A detailed interrogation revealed the roles of all six accused, said the police, who arrested Thiyagarajan on May 1 and four others on May 2. Sharadha, who was absconding since her return, was arrested on Sunday.
Sigamani's body, which was buried as that of an unidentified man after a post-mortem at Palamapuram burial ground in Karur, was exhumed on Saturday and a second post-mortem was performed on the remains.

Jaipur cops arrest ‘supplier' with smack worth Rs 1.6cr

Jaipur: Crime branch of Jaipur police Monday arrested a 39-year-old drug trafficker with 530 grams of smack worth Rs 1.6 crore in his possession. Deputy commissioner of police (crime) Kundan Kanwariya said the man was identified as Ram Rup Mali, a native of Sawai Madhopur district. A special police team monitored Mali's movements for some time before intercepting him near Kho Nagoriyan. Officials said he supplied drugs for the past few months to local distributors linked to larger trafficking syndicates. During questioning, Mali reportedly admitted that he sourced the contraband from a man named Sanu Khan, a resident of Aklera in Jhalawar district. He further disclosed that he supplied smack in Jaipur for the past 2–3 months and was working for prominent local traffickers, including Ashok alias Telia Sansi, Vicky Sansi, and Pintu Sansi. Police said Mali supplied the narcotics twice a month, and the payments were transferred to the Jhalawar-based suppliers through e-Mitra platforms to avoid detection. The funds generated from the illegal trade were used to support his personal lifestyle and hobbies, officials added. The crime branch is now tracing the broader network of traffickers operating between Jhalawar and Jaipur. "Efforts are underway to locate other suspects and identify other financial links used in the illegal drug trade. The accused was booked under relevant provisions of the NDPS Act, and further investigation is ongoing," Kanwariya said. Lucknow, An Indore-based woman accused of hiring men to get her husband killed while on honeymoon in Meghalaya surrendered before Uttar Pradesh Police in Ghazipur on Monday, while another accused man was arrested from Lalitpur district, police said. Sonam Raghuvanshi , who has been accused of orchestrating the murder of her husband Raja Raghuvanshi, was produced before a local court in Ghazipur on Monday night for transit remand permission, following which she was expected to be taken into custody by a Meghalaya Police team that reached here in the evening. The court proceedings continued till late in the night. Earlier in the day, Meghalaya DGP I Nongrang said Raja Raghuvanshi, an Indore-based transport businessman whose body was found a week back in Meghalaya, was allegedly killed by men hired by his wife Sonam. Apart from Sonam, police have arrested three men Akash Rajput from Lalitpur and two others from Indore in connection with the case. A total of five persons have been arrested in the case so far. Raja Raghuvanshi and his wife had gone missing while vacationing at Sohra in Meghalaya's East Khasi Hills district on May 23. Raghuvanshi's body was found in a gorge near the Weisawdong waterfalls on June 2. Sonam had gone missing since then. Ghazipur SP Iraz Raja said Sonam was arrested from 'Kashi Dhaba' on the Varanasi-Ghazipur main road. She was sent to the Sadar Hospital for treatment and then kept at a one-stop centre, which provides assistance to women in distress, including medical and legal aid. A dhaba employee told reporters that Sonam had asked for a phone to call her parents in Indore, which led to the Madhya Pradesh Police tracing her location. Later, Uttar Pradesh Police was contacted, leading to her arrest. At around 6.30 pm on Monday, a team of Meghalaya Police took Sonam into custody from the one-stop centre. Although she was apprehended from the eatery, police said Sonam surrendered before the Nandganj police station in Ghazipur district. Earlier in the day, Govind, Sonam's brother, reached Ghazipur from Meghalaya. "If she is guilty, she should be hanged. Whatever the government decides, we will accept it," he told reporters. Asked if he had spoken to Sonam, Govind said, "I don't know anything as of now. I have no idea. I have not met her. I have not slept for 17 days... I was searching for her with the police in Meghalaya." Akash Rajput was arrested from Chauki village in Uttar Pradesh's Lalitpur district on Sunday night, SP Md Mustaque said. "Meghalaya Police is interrogating Rajput. Further legal action will be taken by the concerned state police," the SP said. Earlier, Meghalaya DGP Nongrang said one person was picked up from Uttar Pradesh in connection with Raja Raghuvanshi's death while two others were nabbed from Indore by a special investigation team. After their marriage on May 11, the Raghuvanshi couple left for Meghalaya on May 20 for their honeymoon. They reached Mawlakhiat village on May 22 on a rented scooter. On May 24, the scooter was found abandoned outside a cafe along the Shillong-Sohra road, following which a search for them was launched.

Honeymoon-murder mystery: Missing wife of dead Indore man arrested in UP for planning his killing

Ghazipur (UP)/Indore/Shillong, June 9 (UNI) A honeymoon-turned chilling murder turned even more sensational as Sonam Raghuvanshi, the missing wife of an Indore-based transport businessman, was arrested in Uttar Pradesh for having hired professional killers to finish off her husband, police said on Monday. A week after Raja Raghuvanshi's decomposed body was found in the jungles of Meghalaya, Sonam turned up distraught in a dhaba located in the Nandganj area of Ghazipur district in Uttar Pradesh. She reached the dhaba at around 2:30 am and took a mobile phone from the dhaba owner and called her brother Govind, UP police said. Govind then informed his acquaintance in Ghazipur. "As soon as the police got the information, a large force, including Superintendent of Police (SP) E Raja, reached the dhaba. Sonam was found in a distraught/unconscious state. At present, she is not in a position to talk. On receiving the information of the incident, Raja's family in Indore left for Ghazipur. On the other hand, Meghalaya Police also left for Ghazipur," said the UP police officer. Sonam Raghuvanshi and Raja Raghuvanshi had gone to Meghalaya for their honeymoon after their marriage on May 11. The couple reached Shillong on May 20 for their honeymoon, and disappeared on May 23 during a sightseeing trip, police said. Raja's body was found in the jungles of Meghalaya after a lot of searching on June 2. However, since then, Sonam had been missing. On Monday, she was found in Uttar Pradesh, over a thousand kilometres away from the crime scene. Meghalaya Director General of Police Idashisha Nongrang claimed Sonam had hired professional killers to murder her husband during the couple's honeymoon in the north eastern state. The plot came to light, when police zeroed in on local guides of Shillong who told them that on May 23 three other people were also seen with Raja Raghuvanshi and Sonam Raghuvanshi when they had gone sightseeing. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma took to social media on Monday morning and said that the state police achieved a major success in the Raja murder case after seven days. "Three suspects from Madhya Pradesh have been arrested. A woman has surrendered. The search is on for one more suspect," he said. The Meghalaya police have already nabbed three of the professional killers allegedly hired by Sonam. A Meghalaya Police official told UNI that Sonam had given herself up before police at Nandganj Police Station of Ghazipur district in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday night The three other murder suspects - two from Indore in Madhya Pradesh and one from Lalitpur district in Uttar Pradesh - were arrested by the Special Investigation Team of Meghalaya Police based on circumstantial evidence related to the cold-blooded murder of Raja. Hunt is on to nab one more accused, police said. Vivek Syiem, Superintendent of Police, East Khasi Hills, said at a press conference today, that those arrested include 19-year-old Akash Rajput, from Lalitpur, Vishal Singh Chauhan, age 22 years, from Indore, and Raj Singh Kushwaha, age 21 years, from Indore. He said the three arrested men and Sonam committed the crime on May 23 and left soon after. He said Meghalaya formed a Special Investigation Team and in a week's time, the SIT accumulated substantial evidence and zeroed down on the culprits. 'All these days, Sonam and others were underground, and yesterday, when our operation (of arresting the three men) started, suddenly she surfaced..." 'All four accused would be produced before the courts for a transit remand to the state (Meghalaya) for further investigation into the cold-blooded murder,' a police official said. All the accused are being grilled for further details, including the motive, how the crime was committed, and other details concerning the case. A case of murder is being registered. The couple had checked in at Shipara Homestay at Nongriat village - home to the famed living double decker root bridge on May 22. Raja and Sonam checked out of their homestay early in the morning. Albert Pde, a tour guide, said that he had seen the couple midway through the trek, returning from Nongriat, were accompanied by three other male tourists. 'Raja was walking with the three men, while Sonam was walking slowly behind them,' Pde had said. The missing of the couple came to light when a two-wheeler which they had hired was found abandoned on May 24 at Sohrarim village between Shillong and Sohra road. On June 2, Meghalaya Police retrieved the decomposed body of Raja from a deep gorge below the Wei Sawdong parking lot at Riat Arliang in Sohra. On June 4, Meghalaya Police recovered a raincoat stained with what looked like blood from a gorge at AD View Point at Mawkma village. The cops also recovered a machete believed to be the murder weapon from the crime scene. Investigators said all material evidence recovered from the crime scene would be sent to Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL), Hyderabad for further analysis. Meanwhile, Sonam's father has denied the police allegations and reiterated his demand for a CBI inquiry into the case. Devi Singh Raghuvanshi, while speaking to the media, said his daughter Sonam has no role in the Raja's murder. "She is innocent. Their marriage took place with mutual consent of the two families," he said. UNI TEAM RN SSP
