Finn Lynch claims dinghy bronze at Grand Slam event

RTÉ News25-06-2025
Finn Lynch has continued his good form in 2025 by claiming bronze at the latest Grand Slam event in Germany.
Lynch (National Yacht Club) entered the ILCA 7 (Dinghy) medal race at Kieler Woche 2025 in third overall and managed a third place finish to retain his podium spot in the final rankings.
On Tuesday the Carlow sailor delivered a strong comeback during the final stages of Gold Fleet racing, with results of second, 11th, and a first to secure his place in the top three.
This is his second Grand Slam bronze medal of the season, following on from a third at the Princess Sofia Regatta in Palma.
In the 49er class, Robert Dickson and Seán Waddilove (Howth Yacht Club & Skerries Sailing Club) produced a superb performance to finish second in their medla race to jump from seventh to fifth in the final standings.
Kieler Woche is one of the world's largest sailing festivals, attracting over three million visitors annually. Now part of the Sailing Grand Slam series, it forms a key leg of a high-performance international circuit that includes four elite European regattas and one in the future Olympic sailing venue of Los Angeles 2028.

Paul O'Donovan a notable absentee as Irish team named for World Rowing Championships

Paul O'Donovan and Daire Lynch are both notable absentees from the Irish rowing team for September's World Championships in China. O'Donovan, a double Olympic gold medallist, and Lynch, an Olympic bronze medallist, are both concentrating on their medical careers at this time. "Paul is working in the Mater Hospital at the moment," Rowing Ireland lead coach Dominic Casey told RTÉ Radio One's Morning Ireland. "He's studying medicine so he unfortunately can't make the World Championships. Daire is the same, he's doing medicine so he's skipping the World Championships this year. We'll definitely see them back. "This year, a post Olympic year, is seen as a challenge. All the elites were furthering their careers in college and working during the year so they were training part-time around their work and college. I think we'll have to be realistic with our expectations for this World Championships. "We have some newcomers and a lot of the teams will be new teams, so it is a mix. It's still a strong team and we'll hope for the best." O'Donovan and Lynch's Olympic medal-winning partners, Fintan McCarthy and Philip Doyle, respectively, will team up for the men's double in Shanghai. Fiona Murtagh, a silver medallist at the European Championships in June, will go in the single sculls while Konan Pazzaia will go in the men's event. The women's four features Olympians Natalie Long and Imogen Magner along with newcomers Aisling Hayes and Emma Waters. Hayes made her debut at the European Championships while Waters is making her senior debut at the World Championships. The men's pair of Nathan Timoney and Ross Corrigan renew their partnership from the Paris Olympic Games. Adam Murphy, Andrew Sheehan, Brian Colsh, and Ronan Byrne will go in the men's quadruple sculls. 2023 world gold medallist Siobhan McCrohan continues her campaign in the lightweight single while Jake McCarthy will go in the men's event. In the women's double, Olympians Zoë Hyde and Margaret Cremen reunite while Tokyo Olympic medallist Emily Hegarty partners with double Olympian Aoife Casey in the women's pair. Paralympian Tiarnan O'Donnell will team up with Sadhbh Ní Laoghaire for the PR2 mixed double sculls. The championships take place from September 21 - 28. Paul O'Donovan not part of the Irish team for next month's World Rowing Championships in Shanghai

The 31-year-old Skibbereen man, who has won two gold and one silver medal at the Olympic Games, is a doctor and has been working in the Mater Hospital in Dublin. He did not make himself available for selection. He had competed for Ireland this season, rowing in a heavyweight double that finished fifth at the World Cup regatta in Lucerne. His partner in that double, Olympic medallist Daire Lynch, is also not in the team that will compete in Shanghai from September 21-28. Lynch is a medical student at UCD. Fintan McCarthy, who won gold with O'Donovan in the lightweight double at Paris 2024 and Tokyo 2020, partners Philip Doyle in a new-look pair for Shanghai. McCarthy has successfully stepped up to heavyweight ranks this season, partnering Konan Pazzaia to bronze at the European Championships in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, and the World Cup Regatta in Lucerne, Switzerland. Doyle partnered with Lynch in the Ireland double in Paris and claimed bronze in the double sculls. Pazzaia moves into the single. The Queen's University student, who was brought up in Switzerland, campaigned well in the single in 2024 and came close to qualifying for Paris. In an 11-crew team – which is yet to be announced by Rowing Ireland – Fiona Murtagh stands out as a strong prospect of a medal. The 30-year-old Galway woman took bronze for Ireland at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in a four, but her transformation into a single sculler this year has been remarkably successful. She took silver at the World Cup in Lucerne and the European Championships. She has every prospect of a podium finish in Shanghai. The team travels on Friday to Spain for a pre-World Championships training camp. The plan is to train in Galicia, a new venue for the Ireland squad.

Sligo Senior Hurling Championship: Heavyweights Easkey get off to winning start, Naomh Eoin pushed all the way by Coolera Strandhill

Sligo Champion Naomh Eoin got their Davis's & Yeats Tavern Senior Hurling Championship campaign up and running with a five point win over Coolera Strandhill at Ransboro on Sunday afternoon. Paul O'Leary scored a hat-trick of goals, while Robert O'Kelly-Lynch hit over 11 points as Naomh Eoin, beaten finalists for the last five years in a row, had to work hard for this win against a Coolera Strandhill side that last won the Championship in 2018.
