3 of a family held as ANTF busts Rs 10cr drug racket
Uttar Pradesh
, in coordination with the Thakurganj police, busted a family-run drug racket and arrested four people, including an elderly man, his son, and daughter-in-law, with narcotics worth Rs 10.29 crore in the international market.
While the arrests took place in Rautghat locality of Lucknow on Sunday morning, the matter came to the fore on Monday.
The accused have been identified as Shravan Kumar Nishad (65), his son Ayush Nishad (20), daughter-in-law Neha Nishad (24), who is the wife of another son), and Sulfiyan (20), a close associate from Wazirbagh.
"The entire family was running the racket. Drugs were brought from Barabanki and sold from their house.
One more family member is on the run who will be nabbed soon," said SHO, Thakurganj, Shrikant Rai.
According to ANTF officials, the joint team recovered 1kg of morphine, 252 grams of charas, 5.5 kg of ganja, and 6 grams of MDMA (mephedrone) from the accused, along with Rs 79,530 cash, a 100 Euro note, four mobile phones, and a car used for transporting the contraband.
"The family was operating as a cohesive drug distribution unit, sourcing and selling high-value narcotics across the state. The involvement of three members from a single household shocked investigators and raised concerns over evolving patterns in the drug trade where trusted family links are being used to reduce risk and avoid detection," the SHO said.
He said that an FIR under sections 8, 20, 21, 29 of the NDPS Act had been filed at Thakurganj police station. Further investigation is underway to identify the source network and possible interstate links.

SAD leader Majithia's judicial custody extended till August 2
A court in Punjab's Mohali district on Saturday (July 19, 2025) extended the judicial custody of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia, who was arrested in a disproportionate assets case, till August 2. Mr. Majithia was produced before the court in Mohali amid tight security arrangements. The SAD leader was sent to judicial custody earlier on July 6. Speaking to the media after hearing in the court, Public Prosecutor Ferry Sofat said the court allowed the application to extend Majithia's judicial custody. His judicial custody has been extended till August 2, he added. The SAD leader was brought from New Nabha Jail in Patiala for his appearance in the Mohali court. Heavy police deployment was made outside the district court complex in Mohali ahead of the hearing. The Punjab Vigilance Bureau had earlier, on June 25, arrested Majithia in the disproportionate assets case allegedly involving laundering of ₹540 crore of "drug money". In the fresh FIR registered against Mr. Majithia, the Vigilance Bureau had claimed the preliminary investigations revealed that more than Rs 540 crore of "drug money" has been laundered through several ways, and it was allegedly facilitated by Mr. Majithia. This FIR against Mr. Majithia stems from an ongoing investigation being conducted by a Special Investigation Team of the Punjab Police into the 2021 drug case. In 2021, Mr. Majithia was booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The action was taken on the basis of a 2018 report of the anti-drug Special Task Force. Mr. Majithia spent more than five months in Patiala jail and walked out of prison in August 2022 after the Punjab and Haryana High Court granted him bail.

PGI to act against private chemist for overcharging
1 2 Chandigarh: Taking cognisance of a TOI exposé on a private chemist allegedly fleecing patients with inflated drug prices, PGI authorities said they would issue a show cause notice to the operator running the outlet within its new outpatient department (OPD). T OI's 'reality check' last week unveiled a disturbing trend: the private shop, despite a contractual obligation to offer a 15% discount on medicines, was reportedly inflating the maximum retail price (MRP) on drug labels to negate this benefit. A comparison with prices at a private chemist in Sector 11 and the AMRIT store revealed that the PGI's OPD chemist was charging a staggering 50% more for the same medicines. "We shall issue a notice to him for the discrepancies pointed out in the news report. In case we are not satisfied with the reply, we shall constitute a committee. This is a serious matter," said PGI deputy director administration (DDA), Pankaj Rai. This isn't the first time a private drug store within PGI has come under scrutiny. In the past, there was a controversy surrounding PGI's emergency drug store, which paid a monthly rental of Rs 1.8 crore. That store was asked to vacate its premises in 2024 following the deaths of five patients who reportedly purchased Propofol injections from the shop. The DDA said, "We will not spare anyone found duping patients within the campus. "

Nivin Pauly-Abrid Shine In Legal Trouble, Fraud Case Registered In Action Hero Biju 2 Row
Last Updated: A case has been filed against Malayalam actor Nivin Pauly and director Abrid Shine for alleged financial fraud, following a complaint by a Thalayolaparambu resident. Malayalam actor Nivin Pauly and filmmaker Abrid Shine are facing legal trouble after a case was registered against them in connection with an alleged financial fraud related to their upcoming film Action Hero Biju 2. The complaint was filed by P S Shamnas, a resident of Thalayolaparambu and co-producer of the 2022 film Mahaveeryar, starring Pauly. According to the police, the FIR was lodged on Wednesday night under IPC Sections 406 (criminal breach of trust) and 420 (cheating). In his complaint, Shamnas alleged that after Mahaveeryar failed commercially, Nivin Pauly offered to pay him Rs 95 lakh as compensation. He further claimed that Pauly promised to include him as a partner in his next film Action Hero Biju 2, directed by Shine. Shamnas alleged that he was asked to invest money into the production of the sequel and ended up spending approximately Rs 1.9 crore. He said the film was officially registered under his production company, Indian Movie Makers. However, he accused Pauly and Shine of entering into a Rs 5 crore distribution deal with a Dubai-based company, presenting an earlier contract that listed the film under Pauly's own production banner. Shamnas alleged that this move deliberately concealed his ownership stake and misled him, resulting in financial loss. In response, Nivin Pauly released a statement on social media clarifying that the dispute is currently under court-directed arbitration as of June 28. He added that there is a gag order in place to maintain confidentiality and that legal proceedings are underway. 'Legal action will be pursued against the same," he said in his post. On the work front, Nivin will next be seen in Sarvam Maya. He was recently announced as the lead in Girish AD's next directorial venture, alongside Mamitha Baiju. Nivin Pauly is all set to return as Sub-Inspector Biju Paulose in the sequel to Action Hero Biju, reuniting once again with director Abrid Shine. The original film, which released on February 4, 2016, was well-received by audiences and praised for its realistic portrayal of a police officer's day-to-day life. Nearly a decade later, the actor-director duo is teaming up for Action Hero Biju 2. The makers had earlier confirmed that pre-production work is now underway. The sequel will be backed by Nivin's home banner, Pauly Jr Pictures. First Published: July 19, 2025, 11:30 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
