Bumrah must play the last two Test matches, says Engineer

Khaleej Times3 days ago
Farokh Engineer may have been living in England for more than 50 years, but the legendary wicketkeeper-batsman remains a proud Indian.
Engineer, whose peak in the 1960s and 1970s coincided with the glory days of the iconic Indian spin quartet — Bishan Singh Bedi, Erapalli Prasanna, Bhagwat Chandrasekhar and Srinivasaraghavan Venkataraghavan — is also incredibly proud to see the phenomenal rise of Jasprit Bumrah.
The Indian pace spearhead's scorching displays of pace, swing and relentless accuracy have even earned him comparisons to Malcolm Marshall, the fabled West Indian widely hailed as the greatest fast bowler of all time.
While Engineer's heart swells with pride when Bumrah is showered with such accolades, what baffles him is the Indian think tank's decision to play the 31-year-old only in three matches of the ongoing five-Test series against Ben Stokes' team in England.
Bumrah, Engineer believes, will be needed in the fourth Test (July 23-27) at Old Trafford, Manchester, where India will aim to bounce back from the heartbreaking defeat in the third Test match at Lord's.
'Now we are 2-1 down, and it's a must-win game for us. So he has to play at Old Trafford,' the 87-year-old Engineer told the Khaleej Times over the phone from Manchester.
Many still believe that the result of the India-Australia Test series earlier this year would have been different had Bumrah not suffered a back injury in the middle of the fifth Test.
Since then, the Indian management has been very careful about managing Bumrah's workload.
But Engineer offers a solution.
'Of course, he has to be handled carefully, they have to wrap him in cotton wool, so just bowl him for three-four overs at a time, when needed, to break a partnership and certainly at the start, he is the jewel in the side,' said Engineer of Bumrah, who has taken 12 wickets in two Tests against England this summer.
'Look, there are quite a few days of rest between the third and fourth Tests. Even Jofra Archer — who made a Test comeback after four years — said he wants to play the remaining Test matches. So I don't know why India came with the pre-conceived idea to play Bumrah only three Tests.'
Engineer, who scored a stunning Test hundred against fearsome West Indies fast bowlers Wes Hall and Charlie Griffith in 1967, then opened up about what makes Bumrah such a special bowler.
'His action is such that the batsman thinks the ball is going to come in, but the odd one hits the seam and just goes out, and that's the most difficult ball to face, it's almost an unplayable ball,' he said.
'It's the ball that swings in, hits the seam, and then it becomes a leg cutter. So, which batsman can play that? Even the best batters would be troubled by that. No other bowler can do that, and that's why it's so important that he plays at Old Trafford.
'In fact, India need him not just at Old Trafford, but also at The Oval for the final Test.'
For India to take the series to the decider with a victory in the fourth Test, the team management must also show confidence in Kuldeep Yadav.
'If Kuldeep had played any of the three Test matches, he would have made a huge difference. And the results might have been different because he can turn the ball on any surface, he is a wrist spinner,' Engineer said.
'Washington Sundar and Ravindra Jadeja are fine bowlers, but in Test cricket you need a genuine wrist spinner which we are fortunate to have and I don't know why we nor not playing him.'
While some of the tactical decisions from the Indian team may have disappointed Engineer, he is hugely impressed by the fierce competition in the series and the great sportsmanship spirit displayed by both teams.
'The two teams fought so hard in the third Test, there were occasions when tempers flared, but it was wonderful to see Stokes hugging Ravindra Jadeja at the end of the match. That's exactly what happened in the 2005 Ashes when Andrew Flintoff went up to the crestfallen Brett Lee to console him after England beat Australia in that dramatic Test (at Edgbaston),' he said.
'I mean this is what Test cricket is all about, the beauty of Test cricket — you fight hard, you play for your country, so you give your 100 per cent, but at the end of the day, you accept the result in a sporting manner, and that is exactly what this series has also shown.
'It's been a great advert for Test cricket at a time when a lot of countries, including India unfortunately, are leaning towards T20. Of course, the IPL is such a huge success, but Test cricket is Test cricket. It's the ultimate challenge.'

Series on the line as India consider Bumrah gamble in do-or-die fourth Test against England

Jasprit Bumrah is a weapon India must use sparingly but with the five-test series against England on the line, the tourists are considering playing their pace spearhead in the fourth Test in Manchester next week. The team management has decided that Bumrah, whose workload has been carefully managed since he returned from a back surgery earlier this year, will play three of the five Tests in England. A victory in Manchester would give England an unassailable 3-1 lead. To prevent that, India are considering playing Bumrah, who skipped the second Test in Birmingham, in the next match rather than preserving him for the final Test at the Oval. 'We know we have got him for one of the last two Tests,' assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate told reporters after a training session on Thursday. 'It's pretty obvious that the series is on the line now in Manchester, so there will be a leaning towards playing him.' 'But again, we have got to look at all the factors: how many days of cricket are we going to get up there, what do we feel is our best chance of winning that game, and then how that fits in together with the Oval.' Arguably the best all-format bowler of his era, Bumrah registered five-wicket hauls in both the Tests he played on this tour of England, though India lost both in Leeds and Lord's. India wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant, who suffered a finger injury at Lord's, did not bat in Thursday's practice. Ten Doeschate was confident Pant will reprise his usual roles in front of the stumps with the bat and behind them with the keeper's gloves in Manchester. 'Look, I don't think you're going to keep Rishabh out of the Test no matter what,' former Dutch international ten Doeschate said. 'He batted with quite a lot of pain in the third Test and it's only going to get easier and easier on his finger.' Former India head coach Anil Kumble weighed in on the importance of Bumrah's availability for the rest of the Test series and suggested that India's pace spearhead should feature in the remaining two Tests. 'I would certainly push for Bumrah to play the next game because that's crucial. If he doesn't play and India end up losing the Test, that's it, the series would be done and dusted. Bumrah should feature in both the remaining Tests. 'Yes, he mentioned earlier that he would only play three matches, but there is a long break after this. He does not need to be part of the home series if he wants rest. But right now, Bumrah should be playing the next two,' said Kumble on JioHostar. So far, Bumrah has picked up 12 wickets in just four innings, making him the second-highest wicket-taker in the series behind Mohammed Siraj. During the practice session on Thursday, the Indian team had an injury scare as left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh suffered a cut on his bowling hand while trying to stop a ball and was seen with a bandage on. India will now be aiming to bounce back in the fourth Test against England at Manchester, starting on July 23, before the fifth and final match of the series takes place at The Oval in London from July 31 to Aug. 4. Meanwhile, head coach Gautam Gambhir joined other members of the team in praising veteran left-arm spin bowling all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja's incredible performance in the Lord's Test. Though Jadeja hit a valiant 61 not out off 181 balls on final day's play, his fourth successive fifty in Tests, India lost at Lord's by 22 runs and find themselves 2-1 behind in the five-match series against England. 'That was an incredible fight. The fight from Jaddu was absolutely brilliant,' said Gambhir in a video posted on on Friday. Jadeja had shown tremendous grit in keeping India in the hunt for chasing 190. 'As a player in the team, Jaddu bhai is extraordinary in fielding, bowling, and batting. The improvement that has come in batting, he makes runs in every important situation for the team. It's very difficult to find such a player for the team. We are lucky to have such a player in our team,' said fast bowler Siraj. Agencies

India ponder Jasprit Bumrah's selection for series-defining Manchester Test against England

India find themselves between a rock and a hard place as they consider whether to select fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah for the fourth Test against England in Manchester next week with the series on the line. Bumrah has been among the top wicket takers in the series despite playing only two out of the three Tests. However, despite his presence India find themselves trailing the five-match series 2-1 after a heartbreaking 22-run defeat in the Lord's Test. Before the series started, it was announced that Bumrah will play only three out of the five Tests due to workload management; the right-arm quick had injured his back during the previous five-match series in Australia which ruled him out for months. While Bumrah has been among the wickets, he has been unable to have a big impact in the second innings of both Tests he played, and which India coincidentally lost. Now India are left with a tough decision – push Bumrah to play the fourth Test which begins on Wednesday or give him enough rest for bigger white-ball assignments like the Asia Cup and the T20 World Cup. If England win the fourth Test, they will take an unassailable lead in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. That would be a tough initiation into Test captaincy for Shubman Gill and possibly cost coach Gautam Gambhir his red-ball duties after heavy defeats at home to New Zealand and in Australia. Which so much uncertainty, India are considering playing Bumrah in the next match rather than preserving him for the final Test at the Oval. 'We know we have got him for one of the last two Tests,' assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate said. 'It's pretty obvious that the series is on the line now in Manchester, so there will be a leaning towards playing him. 'But again, we have got to look at all the factors: how many days of cricket are we going to get up there, what do we feel is our best chance of winning that game, and then how that fits in together with the Oval.' England call in reinforcements England have handed spinner Liam Dawson a Test recall after an eight-year absence, with the 35-year-old replacing the injured Shoaib Bashir. Dawson made the last of his three Test appearances in 2017 but Bashir's finger injury has paved the way for a comeback. Bashir took the match-winning wicket in a tense finish at Lord's on Monday evening, having already broken the little finger on his left hand, and is set for surgery in the coming days. England have run through a host of different spinning options since Dawson, but his consistently impressive performances have persuaded the selectors to draft him in for the fourth Test. England also released seamers Jamie Overton and Sam Cook to play in the county championship, with Josh Tongue and Gus Atkinson retained as additional pace options in a 14-man squad. Chris Woakes could be rested in Manchester after struggling to find his best form this summer but one player who has no intention of sitting out is Jofra Archer. He played a key role in the thrilling 22-run win at Lord's – his first match back after a four-and-a-half-year injury absence. Archer routinely cleared the 90mph mark, struck with his third ball of the match and took two vital wickets on the final morning. England have carefully managed his return to action but now that he has the taste for it, Archer does not want to rest. 'I don't want to lose this series. I told Keysy (ECB managing director Rob Key) that I wanted to play the Test summer and I wanted to play the Ashes. 'I think one tick is already there and I will do everything possible in my power to be on the plane in November, or just before.'

Manchester United quiz: Ruben Amorim, new season and more

Manchester United and Ruben Amorim will be hoping the next season brings with it renewed hope of success after a terrible last campaign. The Red Devils kick off the 2025/26 campaign with a tough test at home against Arsenal on August 17. Last season was one to forget for United after finishing 15th in the Premier League - their lowest position since they were relegated in 1973/74 - and they also lost the Europa League final to Tottenham. There are other issues facing the club. Marcus Rashford is reportedly among five players to have informed United they wish to explore a future away from Old Trafford. Rashford has fallen out of favour with manager Amorim and played for Aston Villa on loan while United had their worst Premier League campaign. United also failed to qualify for the Uefa Champions League as they lost the Europa League final 1-0. Alejandro Garnacho, who was a late substitute in the final, voiced his displeasure on social media after that defeat. With so much happening at United, it can be easy to forget all that has happened so far. Take our quiz below to see how much you remember.
