Welsh hotel is being roasted online by guests with shocking stories to tell

Yahoo4 days ago
Angry tourists have accused a Newport hotel of cancelling their bookings with little or no notice. Reviews online, including on TripAdvisor show a number of tourists alleging staff at the Silurian Hotel in Newport's High Street, which is now owned by budget apartments company Belvilla, had informed them on arrival that their stays had been cancelled.
Visitors to the hotel were often, they claimed, left bemused as to what had happened to their bookings and they also claimed they received little or no explanation from Belvilla, which has operated the hotel since autumn, 2024 and does not appear to have responded to any of the highly critical comments about it online.
In recent weeks, multiple people have told a similar story about the hotel.

Many said they chose the hotel due it being close to Newport railway station, providing convenient access to Cardiff for gigs, but claimed that on arrival hotel staff said they had no evidence of their bookings or in some cases the hotel had decided to cancel their bookings in advance of stays due to the standard of the room. Never miss a Newport story by subscribing to our newsletter here.
One visitor claimed she'd booked for five separate people and each room was cancelled within hours' notice with the same reason given by the hotel.
Suzy Evans, who had booked the hotel in October, 2024, for a gig on July 12, claimed: 'I made a booking at this hotel in October, 2024 for July 12, 2025. The hotel is very close to Newport station and we wanted to stay there as we had tickets to a concert in Cardiff that evening.
'Already when we arrived things did not look promising. We were fourth in the queue to check in and the person being served looked to be having issues with checking in. There were two people serving guests but the gentlemen were just sitting there looking on.
'After 10 to 15 minutes of waiting he finally served the second person in the queue. After 30 minutes of waiting we finally were served but they couldn't find my booking.
'Just two weeks earlier they'd confirmed via Booking.com that I could check in from 2pm. They hunted for another 10 minutes or so and came to the conclusion that they could not in any way offer us a room for the night. We were extremely annoyed and shocked by this having reserved months in advance.'
Suzy also claimed: 'On arriving home I found an email from Booking.com asking me to confirm that I hadn't checked in and then an hour later at midnight another email arrived stating the hotel had cancelled my booking.
'I have tried to contact the hotel directly but there is a recorded message and I cannot leave a voicemail as their inbox is full. Who knows now if they'll try to charge me. It's been quite an unbelievable and unpleasant experience.'
A tourist named Alex also claimed on TripAdvisor that he was left confused when, before he was due to stay at the hotel, he was contacted by Belvilla who told him the rooms weren't right for them and so his booking had been cancelled.
He claimed: 'I booked three rooms for a group and one month before arrival they cancelled the three bookings. The guest experience manager said the rooms were not up to OYO Hotels' standard and so he cancelled our booking.
'He tried to reassure me that we would not be charged any money for this booking. He felt I should be grateful not to be charged for a cancelled booking.'
A review from another visitor named Michelle told the same story, claiming. 'We had five rooms booked and slowly, one by one, they said there was a problem with each room and they needed to cancel. I saw it on loads of previous reviews but thought we'd be okay."
Many of the stories followed a similar line in that tourists claimed they'd booked for particularly busy nights for hotels in the area due to concerts and everything had seemed fine before their bookings were suddenly cancelled.
Lucie, who said she had travelled a long way to the area for a gig in Cardiff, claimed: 'My husband and I booked weeks before a concert we were going to in Cardiff via Booking.com. We travelled a long way to be there - checked the night before that my booking was confirmed.
'When we arrived they said there was no booking in our name. We checked my Booking.com account and the booking had been cancelled just four and a half hours before check in time.
'They left us high and dry on a very busy Friday night. By the time we found somewhere else to stay we had missed the beginning of the concert and had no time to eat.'
Tourist Andy claimed on July 14: 'I arrived at the hotel on Friday afternoon only to be told that they didn't have our reservation despite me having email confirmation and I was also able to show the reservation on their own website.
'They said they were fully booked. By that I take it they have a policy of over booking to ensure that they are full, hence the numerous reviews with regards to last minute cancellations.'
Belvilla has been contacted for comment.

The Jet2Holiday Ad Is Going Viral for All the Wrong Reasons—What Exactly Is It and Should You Be Going on One?

Nothing beats a Jet2holiday—it's a catchy phrase. But while the viral ad is playing around in your head and across social media, it may have left you wondering: what exactly is it? The memorable catchphrase is thanks to an ad run last year by British airline Jet2 and its travel operator, Jet2holidays. In it, the low-cost company touts its deals over the tune of singer Jess Glynne's hit "Hold My Hand," promising travelers can save "£50 per person" and delivering the now-famous line. Since then, the clip has gone viral with more than 4 million views and travelers have taken notice. Recently, the catchy phrase, read by voiceover artist Zoë Lister, has been used as a soundtrack for people showing off their dream vacations or even making fun of chaotic travel misadventures. (Think: running from camels, water park mishaps, and more.) Following her Jet2 fame, Lister said the video has sparked positive comments from around the world, including in many markets the company doesn't even operate in. "I've always known that British people have a really funny sense of humor... but you know what, this has gone global," Lister shared in a post on Instagram, adding she is getting messages from people all over the world, including from the United States where "they don't even have holidays, they have vacations. They don't know what a Jet2holidays is, but they want one." The commercial's popularity has also had another effect: the name recognition of Jet2holidays has been growing. For its part, the tour operator offers vacation packages inclusive of flights and hotels throughout Europe and beyond, often at a discounted rate. The company offers vacation getaways to popular destinations like Ibiza, Monaco, the Greek islands, Iceland, Rome, Morocco, and more. While Jet2holidays may be popular for travelers across Europe, there are several tour operators and travel companies who offer similar packages to U.S. travelers. JetBlue Vacations, for example, offers flight and hotel packages and flight and cruise packages with other perks like free carry-on bags. The popularity of vacation packages goes hand-in-hand with the surge in interest in all-inclusive resorts, which draw travelers with a one-stop experience. In fact, 42 percent of Gen Z travelers recently surveyed by the Expedia Group said they preferred all-inclusive resorts to any other type of hotel. In addition, the company said searches of "all-inclusive" have jumped 60 percent on from the last half of 2023 to the first half of 2024.

Birmingham Airport flights grounded until 8pm after emergency landing

Flights at Birmingham Airport will remain grounded until at least 8pm after a small aircraft made an emergency landing. Three people from the aircraft were treated at the scene with one suffering minor injuries from the incident, which occurred at around 1.40pm on Wednesday, West Midlands Police said. Other emergency services including police, fire and ambulance all attended the scene at the airport's runway. Footage and images shared on social media appeared to show a small white plane lying flat on the airport tarmac. The aircraft currently remains on the runway. Some 25 departure flights listed on the airport's website to destinations across Europe, including one to Amsterdam originally scheduled for 8.50pm, had been cancelled. Passengers have been told to check the status of their flight before coming to the airport, with both check-in and security also temporarily shut. Birmingham Airport first shared that its runway was temporarily closed following the incident at around 2.40pm. In an update posted on X, the airport said: 'Following an aircraft incident that occurred this afternoon, operations are expected to remain suspended until at least 8pm. 'Passengers at the airport are advised to speak to their airline for further information. We apologise for the inconvenience this has caused.' The Air Accidents Investigations Branch (AAIB) said it had started an investigation into the incident, with 'a multi-disciplinary team including inspectors with expertise in aircraft operations, engineering and recorded data' deployed to the airport. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said disruption at the airport was 'minimal' but she understood 'how frustrating' the situation was for passengers. Gunnar Lauridsen, a 76-year-old from Denmark who had been on holiday playing golf, said he would most likely miss his connecting flight because of the closed runway. He said: 'We are ultimately going to Billund in Denmark. This delay probably means we can't get our connection. So that means that we will be staying probably in Amsterdam overnight. 'I should have been to the doctor's tomorrow morning. When you travel, things happen.' Camile Monteleone, a visual merchandiser, was meant to fly home to Barcelona after working in the UK for three days, but did not know if her flight from the airport had been cancelled. The 30-year-old said: 'I don't have any news. I'm like 'what is going on'. It does not say anything on the Ryanair app about the flight. 'I'm just waiting for information. I have to let people know I'm here, stuck at the airport. I cannot do anything else.' Haley, who did not give her surname, said she was told by airline Tui to check in for her flight to Majorca as normal but has since been told she cannot go inside the airport. The 42-year-old said: 'It's taken the shine off a bit. It's not too bad at the minute. We're trying to stay positive. 'Tui told us to check in as normal, but we've got here and been told we can't go inside the building. We've just been told they're moving people to the NEC.' West Midlands Police said in a post on X: 'We are at Birmingham Airport this afternoon after a small aircraft was involved in an emergency landing at around 1.40pm.' 'Officers are among the emergency crews at the scene and one person has been reported to have minor injuries. 'The Civil Aviation Authority has been informed and the airport has suspended operations as an investigation is carried out.' West Midlands Ambulance Service said in a statement: 'We were called at 1.45pm to an incident involving a light aircraft at Birmingham Airport. 'Hazardous Area Response Team (Hart) paramedics and three paramedic officers were sent to the scene. 'Upon arrival we found three patients from the aircraft, all of whom were assessed and discharged at the scene.' Woodgate Aviation said one of its Beechcraft fixed-wing aircraft was involved in the incident. The company said in a statement: 'The turbo-prop aircraft was on a flight to Belfast International Airport when it developed landing gear problems. The aircraft returned to Birmingham and made an emergency landing and the main under-carriage collapsed on touch down. 'Two crew members and a passenger were on board but were uninjured. 'The aircraft remains on the runway and Woodgate Aviation will be co-operating fully with Air Accident investigators and airport services. 'We would like to pay tribute to the professionalism of our colleagues and the emergency services at the airport for their prompt action.' Consumer group the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) offered stranded passengers a free pint if they showed their boarding pass at the Great British Beer Festival, which was taking place in the nearby National Exhibition Centre.
