He said the budget is crucial to maintain government operations, including civil servant salaries and ongoing programmes.

On fiscal talks with the federal government, he said both sides have shared their expectations and will continue discussions to reach a fair outcome. Masidi also welcomed Sabah's recent recognition as Malaysia's Most Outstanding State 2024, describing it as a reflection of the government's efforts toward long-term development. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Another assembly sitting possible - Masidi

Masidi delivering the Chief Minister's speech at the award ceremony. KOTA KINABALU (July 20): There is a possibility of another State Assembly sitting before its dissolution ahead of the coming state elections, said State Finance Minister Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun. Masidi made the statement when asked about the potential tabling of the Sabah Budget 2026. He explained that the State Budget must be presented by the Finance Minister either before or after the state elections to avoid any disruption in government operations, including the implementation of programmes and the payment of civil servant wages. 'If the elections are held earlier, then I think we still have time to table the budget around November. But if the assembly is dissolved later, we might be able to table it around December,' he told reporters at the sidelines of the International Business Review (IBR) ASEAN Awards here on Saturday night. When asked whether the budget would be tabled before or after the State Assembly is dissolved, Masidi said the decision rests with the Chief Minister. On the possibility of another sitting before dissolution, he added, 'The possibility is always there.' Previously, after the July 8 State Assembly sitting, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor had hinted that it might be the final session for the current term. When asked by reporters if it marked the end of the legislative term, he responded it was 'more or less,' noting that all bills beneficial to the state had already been passed. Political analysts expect the dissolution of the state assembly after Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) has held its congress from July 25-27. They speculate that Hajiji is likely to call for polls before National Day on August 31 or after Malaysia Day on September 16. Hajiji said that he would consult the presidents of all Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) component parties before making any move to dissolve the Sabah State Legislative Assembly. The 16th Sabah State Legislative Assembly will be automatically dissolved on Nov 11 this year if it is not dissolved earlier. Speaker Datuk Seri Kadzim M Yahya said the five-year term of the assembly is calculated from the date of the first sitting of the 16th Sabah State Assembly, which was on Nov 12, 2020, making Nov 11 this year the end of the term. Gagasan Rakyat, PBS, STAR, SAPP, Usno, PCS, PHRS and LDP are members of GRS. PBS and STAR have called for GRS to contest solo in the 17th State Election.

Health outreach or ‘gay party'? Kelantan urges facts before judgement

Published on: Sunday, July 20, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jul 20, 2025 By: Malay Mail Text Size: KOTA BHARU: The Kelantan government has today called for a thorough investigation, after the police was criticised for raiding an HIV outreach programme which it had alleged as a 'gay sex party'. Deputy Menteri Besar Datuk Mohamed Fadzli Hassan ( pic ) said in a statement that all parties must remain open-minded, and everyone must be afforded the right to justice with wisdom and fairness. Advertisement 'To resolve this matter, the Kelantan state government calls for a thorough and comprehensive investigation to ensure that no party becomes a victim of misunderstanding, slander, or public judgement before the truth is fully established. 'If investigations confirm that the police's actions were justified and based on facts, stern measures should be taken against those involved,' he said in a statement here. 'Conversely, if the NGOs' and individuals' claims are proven true, corrective steps must be taken. The principle of justice must prevail,' he added. However, he insisted that anyone planning potentially controversial events to seek proper approval from authorities. He added that if participants were from outside Kelantan, this should be clarified to protect locals from undue blame. 'Transparency is essential to prevent baseless assumptions and unwarranted judgement within society,' he said. Fadzli's remark came as some locals blamed the media and the police for casting Kelantan in a bad light by falsely claiming that a 'gay sex party' had taken place in the state. On Friday, the MAC confirmed that it conducted a night outreach session here on June 17 under the Differentiated HIV Services for Key Populations model. MAC said the session was in collaboration with Kota Jembal Health Clinic and part of a strategic approach introduced by the Health Ministry. It said the session was held from 8pm to 2am and had reached over 70 high-risk individuals, with services scheduled outside office hours to improve accessibility. This comes as a coalition of civil society groups had also urged Kelantan police to revise their statement on a June 2025 raid of an alleged 'gay sex party' here, which they clarified was in fact a health outreach event. The groups, led by transgender rights advocacy group Justice for Sisters, said media reports following the raid resulted in harmful and stigmatising remarks that have intensified fear among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) individuals seeking health services. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Sabahans urged to back local governance

Published on: Sunday, July 20, 2025 Published on: Sun, Jul 20, 2025 Text Size: KOTA KINABALU: Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) vice president Datuk Peter Mak ( pic ) has urged Sabahans to unite in support of greater state autonomy to ensure the state's development keeps pace with the rest of the country. Speaking at the PBS Api-Api, Luyang and Likas joint AGM, he said meaningful progress is possible only when Sabah has full control over its own affairs. Advertisement Mak said local leaders are better placed to understand and address community needs, drawing from his experience leading PBS in Labuan. He clarified that the autonomy push should not be viewed as anti-Federal, but rather a step toward development driven by local priorities and realities. He also called on voters to support Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) in the upcoming state election, saying a strong mandate is essential to uphold Sabah's rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
