Pakistan plans to build $10.5 million aquaculture park to promote seafood exports

Arab Newsa day ago
KARACHI: Pakistan is planning to build Rs3 billion ($10.5 million) aquaculture park in the southern port city of Karachi, Maritime Affairs Minister Junaid Anwar Chaudhry announced on Saturday, amid efforts to strengthen the country's blue economy.
According to the World Bank, the blue economy is defined as sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improving livelihoods and creating jobs, while preserving the ocean ecosystem health.
Pakistan has been pushing to modernize its port infrastructure and expand its role in regional trade by improving cargo handling, digitalizing port operations and encouraging public-private partnerships.
Speaking at a meeting to review progress on blue economy, Chaudhry said this new aquaculture park will be built on 120 acres and directed the Qur'angi Fish Harbor Authority to submit its report within 10 days.
'Pakistani coastal waters are very suitable for aquaculture,' he said in a statement shared by the maritime affairs ministry. 'The project will be built under a public-private partnership and the park will boost seafood exports.
Pakistan's fish and fish preparation exports reached $465.4 million in the outgoing fiscal year that ended in June, according to official data. The exports were up 13.4 percent from $410.3 million in the previous year.
Authorities are currently trying to enhance the potential of Pakistan's fisheries, logistics and marine services while reducing environmental harm.
'Investment in aquaculture and port infrastructure is essential for national development,' Chaudhry told representatives of Gwadar Port, Qur'angi Fish Harbor, Marine Fisheries and Balochistan Chambers of Commerce and Industry at the meeting.
'The same aquaculture model will be implemented in Balochistan as well.'
In May, the Pakistani government announced the creation of a new Maritime Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCI), saying it would serve as a specialized platform for uniting stakeholders from across the maritime spectrum to pursue greener policies and long-term economic resilience.
'This chamber will not only support investment and innovation in the maritime sector but also prioritize sustainability at ports, promote green technologies and foster carbon reduction strategies,' Chaudhry said at the time.

Pakistan cuts Karachi port charges by 50% in climate-focused maritime reform push

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry on Saturday announced a 50% reduction in Karachi Port charges, in a move aimed at cutting trade logistics costs and promoting climate-resilient, low-emission shipping practices. The reform is part of a broader strategy to modernize Pakistan's maritime sector and reduce its carbon footprint, as the country works to align trade infrastructure with global environmental standards. 'By lowering operational costs and streamlining logistics, we are not only boosting trade competitiveness but also contributing to climate resilience,' Chaudhry said in a statement issued by his office. The new measures include halving charges related to port handling, vessel services and storage while scrapping a previously planned annual five percent fee hike. Officials say the move is expected to benefit exporters of dry bulk goods and reduce emissions by improving port turnaround times and easing congestion. 'This isn't just a financial measure,' Chaudhry added. 'It's a pivot toward low-impact, future-ready maritime trade. A more efficient port reduces idle time for vessels, lowers fuel consumption and supports greener supply chains.' Karachi Port is one of Pakistan's largest and busiest deep-water seaports, handling a significant share of the country's import-export traffic. Officials say the reforms will enhance the port's efficiency while positioning it as a regional hub for climate-conscious maritime activity. The announcement follows recent steps by the ministry to improve logistics and infrastructure, including the formation of a high-level committee to reduce container dwell times by 70%, and the deployment of advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence and drones for port monitoring.

Pakistan mulls ADB role in CPEC's flagship Main Line‑1 railway upgrade

KARACHI: Pakistan is considering financial support from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) for the long-delayed Main Line‑1 (ML‑1) railway upgrade — part of the China‑Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) — as an ADB fact-finding team inspected a section of the track on Saturday, according to an official statement. ML‑1, a $6.7 billion upgrade of Pakistan's 1,687-kilometer Karachi–Peshawar rail artery, is central to CPEC. The overhaul, involving track doubling, advanced signaling and higher-speed trains, is expected to boost cargo and passenger capacity while easing the transport of trade goods to and from the country's southern ports. 'Experts from the Asian Development Bank inspected the Karachi to Rohri railway line today,' Pakistan Railways said in a statement. 'The Bank's Chief Transport Planner, Sangyoon Kim, conducted the 480-kilometer track inspection alongside the chief engineer (open lines) of Pakistan Railways.' 'ADB's fact-finding specialists will prepare a report on the readiness of the Main Line-1 (ML-1) project, following which a final decision regarding the project's financing will be made,' the statement added. ML‑1 underpins Pakistan's main rail connectivity, carrying a major bulk of the country's cargo and passenger traffic. The project was approved by the Economic Coordination Committee in 2020 but has repeatedly stalled amid funding hitches. Speaking to Arab News, Babar Ali Raza, spokesperson at the railways ministry, said ADB was currently only preparing the feasibility. 'The main financier is China,' he continued. 'The team conducting the inspection is assessing its own feasibility to determine whether ADB can provide financing or not.' 'This would be ADB's own financing,' he added, 'however much they want to contribute.' Pakistan and China have described CPEC as a 'game-changer' for growth. The corridor comprises multibillion-dollar infrastructure initiatives covering roads, energy and rail. The two countries are also striving for regional connectivity, with Pakistan actively pursuing economic diplomacy in the neighborhood and offering its southern ports to landlocked Central Asian countries for global trade.

Pakistan wins top honors at UK air show after JF-17 deployment post-India clash

KARACHI: Pakistan Air Force has won two prestigious awards at the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) in the United Kingdom, said an official statement on Saturday, where its newly deployed JF-17 Thunder Block-III fighter jets made their debut amid heightened interest following a recent military standoff with India. The JF-17 Block-III was awarded the coveted 'Spirit of the Meet' Trophy, a rare honor given to the aircraft that best embodies the ethos and excitement of the global event. Pakistan's C-130H Hercules, painted in a custom livery themed 'Eyes in the Skies,' also received the 'Concours d'Elegance' Trophy for best-maintained and most aesthetically presented aircraft, according to Pakistan's military. The awards come just days after Pakistan deployed these aircraft to the RIAT, one of the world's most prestigious military air shows, as part of a broader push to display its airpower and modernization drive. 'Winning these prestigious awards is a testament to our professionalism, technical expertise and relentless pursuit of excellence,' said Air Chief Marshal Zaheer Ahmed Baber Sidhu, who congratulated the PAF contingent on its performance, according to the military's media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). 'Keeping the nation's flag high has always been the hallmark of Pakistan Air Force,' he added. The JF-17 Block-III is a 4.5-generation, multi-role fighter equipped with a long-range beyond-visual-range missile capability. Co-developed by Pakistan and China, the aircraft is central to Pakistan's indigenous defense strategy. It also played a vital role in the intense, four-day military standoff with India in May when Pakistan shot down advanced Indian fighter jets. The aircraft flew from Pakistan to Royal Air Force Base Fairford in southern England earlier this week, successfully conducting air-to-air refueling mid-flight — a maneuver the military described as evidence of the PAF's growing long-range operational capabilities. 'PAF's outstanding performance at RIAT-2025 not only cements its standing among leading global air forces but also serves as a source of immense pride for the entire Pakistani nation,' the ISPR said. Pakistan has previously won honors at RIAT in 2006, 2016, and 2018, reinforcing what the statement described as a consistent record of aviation excellence.
