The 30-year-old also said that he has been undergoing treatment for alopecia since recovering from testicular cancer, which he was first diagnosed with in 2016, with one form of medication containing a prohibited substance.
He described the news of the positive test as a 'very hard blow.'
'I could not believe it, given that I have never in my life consumed prohibited substances,' Yeray said in a post on Instagram.
'Since I overcame my illness, I have been undergoing treatment against alopecia for years and, after studying the case, we have established that the positive test was the result of my unintentionally taking a preventive medication against hair loss that contained a banned substance.
'The disciplinary proceeding is currently under investigation and subject to confidentiality, so I am provisionally suspended and am not authorised to make any further public statements.
'I would like to say to all of you that I am very sorry for this situation but, with the support of the club, I am working on my defence in the belief that I will be able to return to the field as soon as possible. Once the process is completed, I will give all the necessary explanations.'
Athletic expressed their support for Yeray in a statement and described the incident as 'human error.'
UEFA does not comment on any alleged cases of doping until a final disciplinary decision has been made.
Yeray has spent his entire career with Athletic. After coming through the club's academy and featuring for the reserve side, he made his first team debut in September 2016.
He was diagnosed with testicular cancer in December of that year and returned to action just over a month-and-a-half later, though in June 2017 it was announced that an abnormality had been discovered and he required further treatment. He returned to competition in February of the following year.
Yeray has made 257 appearances for Athletic, scoring five goals and helping his side win the Supercopa de Espana in 2021 and the Copa del Rey in 2024.

Inter Milan Seeking Clarity On Hakan Calhanoglu's Intentions Amidst Doubts Over Future
Inter Milan are keen to understand the plans and intentions of midfielder Hakan Calhanoglu, with the Turkish international heavily linked with a departure this summer. As reported in today's newspaper edition of Tuttosport, and via the former AC Milan and Bayer Leverkusen midfielder has received a proposal from Turkish club Fenerbahce. The Istanbul outfit, led by ex-Inter coach Jose Mourinho, have offered Calhanoglu a contract worth €6 million per season, plus bonuses, but their proposal to Inter of €20m falls short of what the Nerazzurri value him. With Inter unwilling to allow Calhanoglu to leave at that price, they wish to first understand what the 31-year-old intends to do, and if he remains committed to the project at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza. Calhanoglu has been linked with moves to both Fenerbahce and Galatasaray this summer, particularly after a public spat with Inter captain Lautaro Martinez. The midfielder joined from rivals Milan in 2021 and has helped Inter win one Serie A title and the Coppa Italia twice.

Nottingham Forest rival Napoli with opening Ndoye bid
Premier League side Nottingham Forest have sent an official offer for Bologna winger Dan Ndoye, reports Fabrizio Romano. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano reports that Nottingham Forest have sent an official offer for Bologna winger Ndoye. Nottingham Forest send opening Ndoye offer The Swiss international is Napoli's top priority target for the attacking winger position, where the Partenopei have already signed a reinforcement in Noa Lang. According to Romano, however, Forest are serious about their interest in the player, having sent an offer to sign the 24-year-old. Romano adds that Ndoye has already approved a potential move to Forest, so it's now up to Bologna to negotiate a transfer fee with Forest. Bologna discussing Ndoye contract extension Bologna director Marco Di Vaio said earlier this week that the Rossoblu had not received official offers for Ndoye, adding that the club was already discussing a contract extension with their star winger. Ndoye scored eight goals and provided four assists in 30 Serie A appearances last season and scored the decisive goal in a historic Coppa Italia Final won by Bologna against Milan.

Nottingham Forest keen on move for Dan Ndoye of Bologna
Nottingham Forest are keen on a move for Bologna winger Dan Ndoye. Ndoye, 24, joined Bologna from Basel in the summer of 2023 and has registered 12 goals and 15 assists in 97 appearances since. Forest's move for Ndoye comes after selling Anthony Elanga to Newcastle United for an initial £52million ($70.7m) earlier this month. The City Ground side were among the clubs interested in signing fellow wide man Johan Bakayoko for PSV Eindhoven, but the Belgian has since joined RB Leipzig. Advertisement Bologna sporting director Marco Di Vaio said his side were in talks with Ndoye about extending his terms when asked about Forest's interest in the player at a gala dinner on Friday. 'The boy has some interest, but not officially from any team,' Di Vaio told reporters, per Tuttomercatoweb. 'We're also talking to him about the possibility of extending and improving his contract, and he's also open to it. The goal is to maintain the team's structure and make as few changes as possible.' After recording only one league goal during his debut season in Italy, Ndoye scored eight times, adding four assists, in 30 Serie A games last term. He also helped Bologna win the Coppa Italia, scoring the only goal during his side's 1-0 win over AC Milan in May's final. The Switzerland international played off both flanks last season, having also operated down the middle earlier in his career. Bologna have already added a winger to their squad, with Federico Bernardeschi joining on a free transfer after his exit from Toronto FC. Forest are unlikely to find a direct replacement for Elanga, who remains one of the fastest players in the Premier League. But in Ndoye, they would be signing a player with explosive qualities. The Swiss is not as quick as Elanga (who is?) but he has enough speed to beat his man and he has a proven end product. He provided eight goals and four assists in Serie A last season and, like Elanga, he is a player who is capable of carrying the ball swiftly up the pitch. Ndoye averaged 5.54 progressive carries per 90 minutes in the Italian top division, giving him a percentile of 94 among the other players in the competition. Similarly, his average of 9.70 progressive passes received was in the 93rd percentile. Capable of playing on either side, Ndoye would, in theory, fit well into Nuno Espirito Santo's style of play. Advertisement Ndoye played eight times in the Champions League for Bologna last season and previously featured in the Conference League while with Basel, so he does have valuable European experience, as well as 22 caps for his country. At 24, Ndoye has his prime years still ahead of him, while still potentially having the ability to improve in the future.
