Rupert Everett Decries 'Cinematic Wokery' In 'Puritanical' Climate, Says He Hate-Watches ‘Hacks'

Yahoo13-06-2025
British actor Rupert Everett, who is on the jury at the Taormina Film Festival, spoke candidly — at some points seriously and others more drolly — this afternoon on a number of topics ranging from his thoughts on the industry today to the threat of AI and how his tastes in consuming content run to 'things I don't really like to watch.'
Charming the assembled film students and accredited attendees, Everett kicked off the conversation in Italian, talking about his experience with Francesco Rosi on 1987's Chronicle of a Death Foretold and the 2019 mini The Name of the Rose, which shot at Cinecittà.

Then, asked about the state of the industry, Everett pivoted more so to television than cinema and said: 'I think for me it's not having a very good moment because I preferred the world of entertainment when it was a little bit less puritanical. I feel that now we've got into a world where everybody's so easily offended by anything that anybody does that the result is that everything is completely predictable, and as a result really quite boring. Also, everything is very good because now everyone knows how to reference Visconti for this or Truffaut for that and put it all together — and all these series, they're all good. But I don't feel for me there's personality behind a lot of things, there's just this horrible political movement of kind of cinematic wokery which I really don't like. I think it's as bad as the 4th century Christians in the Roman Empire, they're destroying everything.'

When queried about what content he enjoys, the multiple BAFTA and Golden Globe nominee said: 'I like to watch things I really don't like. For example, I've been watching this series called Hacks recently, and I really hate every single episode. Each episode I hate more than the last one, but I can't stop watching, so I enjoy that.'

On the subject of AI, Everett mused that it poses a threat to actors, saying: 'I'm sure eventually they'll be able to do all the acting and we'll have to go and do something else. I'm going to become an intimacy director. It's a very easy job, you do three weeks training and then you can tell everybody what to do on a film.'

File Photo by Rune Hellestad/UPI | License Photo Aug. 14 (UPI) -- Netflix is teasing Part 2 of Wednesday's sophomore season, which arrives on the streamer Sept. 3. In a preview released Thursday, viewers see Wednesday (Jenna Ortega) jolt awake in a hospital bed, only to see Principal Weems (Gwendoline Christie) standing at her bedside with a sponge. "What ring of Hell is this?" Wednesday asks upon seeing her. Weems had died in Season 1. "This isn't hell, Miss Addams," Weems says. "But I understand the confusion." "If I'm not dead than why are you here?" Wednesday asks. "Because I am your new spirit guide. Surprise." The trailer shows Wednesday contending with her new companion and Tyler (Hunter Doohan), who is planning to kill Wednesday and Enid (Emma Myers). An earlier trailer for Season 2 showed Wednesday navigating a disturbing vision upon her return to Nevermore Academy. "She learns that her best friend and roommate Enid Sinclair will die -- and that she's somehow responsible," an official synopsis reads. The sophomore season also stars Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzman and Isaac Ordonez as Morticia, Gomez and Pugsley Addams, respectively. Part 1 of Season 2 arrived on Netflix Aug. 6, after it was renewed for Season 3 in July. Liberal Jimmy Kimmel announces Italian citizenship. Ciao, baby!

Unfortunately, I've never been to Italy, but I've visited other countries in Europe. We can enjoy the beauty in other parts of the world and learn a lot from other cultures. But I still return to America happy to be home. I love my country, and I'd never become a citizen of another country, let alone do so because of America's current political climate. Yet, that's exactly what late night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel just did. During an appearance on the "The Sarah Silverman Podcast," on Aug. 7, Kimmel said he obtained Italian citizenship and alluded that it was because of President Donald Trump, though he didn't expressly say that. "A lot of people I know are thinking about where they can get citizenship," Silverman said. Kimmel replied, "I did get Italian citizenship." "What's going on is as bad as you thought it was going to be," Kimmel said. Silverman replied, "Way worse." "It's so much worse. It's just unbelievable," Kimmel said. "Like I feel like it's probably even worse than he would like it to be." It's not clear if Kimmel plans to move to Italy or continue to live and work in the United States. Did someone forward you this newsletter?Sign up here to get it delivered in your inbox every Thursday. It's free! Kimmel has long been a harsh critic of Trump. Ironically, as Trump makes dramatic changes that will help the American people, late night talk shows like Kimmel's have taken a hit. "Late Show" host Stephen Colbert's show was canceled in July, even though his ratings beat Kimmel's and 'Tonight Show' host Jimmy Fallon's. Trump, not one to shy from trash talking his political foes, has predicted that Kimmel and Fallon will be canceled next. I have a sliver of respect for liberals who make good on their threat to leave America when a Republican is elected. At the same time, it's silly. We are blessed to live in the most powerful country in the world, and it's the people who elect our president, Republican or Democrat. If a person as wealthy and famous as Kimmel isn't happy to live in America because of Trump, by all means, don't let the door hit you on the way out. When an intelligent and funny guy like Kimmel says America under Trump is worse than he thought it would be, what does he mean? Our economy is thriving, the border is secure, taxes have been cut and there might soon be peace in the Middle East and Ukraine thanks to Trump. I guess that's not enough for Kimmel, So, enjoy the gelato. I'll enjoy my freedom. Read more from me and my colleagues:
