carsales Drives Operational Transformation and AI-Powered Customer Service in Australia with Thoughtworks

Business Wire29-04-2025
MELBOURNE, Australia--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Thoughtworks, a global technology consultancy that integrates design, engineering and AI to drive digital innovation, has collaborated with carsales, Australia's #1 digital auto marketplace, to support a successful operational transformation. Leveraging Thoughtworks' advanced engineering practices, carsales streamlined its internal development processes and accelerated the launch of its new AI-powered features and capabilities to enhance the automotive customer experience and maintain its competitive edge.
Founded in 1997, carsales revolutionized the automotive industry by digitizing print classifieds. Recognizing the need to adapt and innovate in a rapidly evolving technological landscape, carsales embarked on a journey to optimize its engineering organization.
"To sustain our competitive advantage and continue delivering exceptional customer experiences, addressing some challenges within our engineering processes was important," said Matt Earle, EGM of Consumer at carsales. "Thoughtworks' Engineering Excellence offering provided the structured approach and AI-powered software engineering capabilities that helped us to unlock our full potential."
In collaboration with Thoughtworks, carsales implemented key initiatives:
Optimizing high-performing teams: By adopting a customer experience strategy for new products and feature releases, the roles and responsibilities of the team focused on private buyers' purchasing experiences were redefined. More specifically, leveraging story mapping for the planned feature releases alongside identifying streamlined deployment processes and cost reduction priorities, resulted in improved decision-making, execution speed and delivery efficiency.
Reducing the time to value: Through an iterative approach with Test-Driven Development, Thoughtworks helped increase delivery predictability of new capabilities faster. As a disruptive, digital native company, this enables carsales' developers to roll out new features to customers ahead of the competition. By enhancing the test pyramid with system and contract tests, and automating quality checks, carsales achieved higher code quality, improved developer confidence and faster delivery speeds.
The impact of these improvements were evident in the successful launch of carsales' Model Finder - an AI-powered vehicle recommendation tool that tailors car suggestions based on buyers' lifestyle needs and preferences, whether for family driving, commuting, trade work, or other purposes. This project showcased the benefits of the new engineering practices, including more efficient resource utilization, risk reduction, faster time-to-market and higher ROI.
'carsales' commitment to keeping up with the latest innovations in engineering excellence and AI is driven by its mission to make buying and selling a great experience for customers,' said Karin Verloop, Managing Director for Tech and Business Services, Thoughtworks Asia Pacific. 'The successful launch of the AI-powered Model Finder is a testament to their commitment to delivering exceptional customer experiences. We're proud to have played a role in their operational transformation and look forward to their continued advancement in the digital auto marketplace sector.'
Thoughtworks' Engineering Excellence is a field-tested and data-driven methodology that combines platform technologies, engineering practices and developer experience approaches under an overarching measurement and governance model. By addressing key focus areas such as platform engineering, developer productivity, testing strategies and knowledge management, the service offering enables organizations to identify and eliminate waste, reduce friction and accelerate value delivery.

Hertz stock jumps on deal to sell its used cars on Amazon

Rental car firm Hertz (HTZ) struck a deal with Amazon Autos (AMZN) on Wednesday to sell some of its used car inventory, which the company says will make it easier for customers to purchase cars from its fleet. Starting today, customers can search Amazon Autos to browse, finance, and purchase from thousands of used Hertz fleet vehicles from brands like Ford, Toyota, Chevrolet, Nissan, and others. Hertz Car Sales, the rental car firm's used car sales arm, will be Amazon Autos' first fleet dealer. Hertz shares jumped 9% in premarket trade. "Our goal is to reimagine the car-buying experience and meet customers where they are — whether online or in person — with convenience, confidence and scale," said Jeff Adams, Hertz Car Sales EVP in a statement. "Amazon Autos is the ideal partner to help us deliver on this as customers can shop our expansive inventory of high-quality used cars on the same trusted marketplace where millions shop every day." Hertz said sales will begin in Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, and Seattle metro areas, with plans to expand to Hertz Car Sales' 45 locations nationwide. After customers complete their purchase online, they can pick up the vehicles at Hertz locations in those cities. "This collaboration allows us to offer an expanded selection of well-maintained vehicles from more dealerships across the country, while maintaining the simplicity that customers expect from Amazon,' said Fan Jin, Global Head of Amazon Autos in a statement. Hertz will offer a 115-point inspection process, and 12-month/12,000 mile powertrain warranty. Hertz is also adding 7-day/250-mile buy back guarantee and 24-hour roadside assistance. For Amazon, adding Hertz vehicles is another big move for its auto sales business. Late in 2024 Amazon struck a deal with Hyundai (HYMTF) to sell new vehicles in cities like New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, among others offering Amazon users the ability to buy and finance vehicles from local participating dealers directly on Amazon's website or app. As for Hertz, the company is coming off something of a PR hit after its newly implemented AI scanning tool for returned vehicles dinged renters with high fees, sometimes thousands of dollars, for damage that renters claim they did not do. July brought Western European's diesel car share to 12.2%

Year-on-year diesel sales volume in July was down by a modest 23k units according to our figures – a better result for diesel than seen in June when a 50k loss was experienced. To date in 2025, the decline in diesel car sales volume is 226k units, with a YTD diesel share of new car sales standing at 11.6% to July – just over three percentage points lower than the January to July 2024 figure. Year-to-date, Austria followed by Ireland and Germany have seen the largest percentage drops in diesel demand, but the downward trend remains relatively gentle as there is considerable consumer caution in many European markets over switching to BEV, meaning the ICE segment in general is only decaying slowly. The chart below shows just how resilient Germany's diesel car market is compared with most others in the region. Its share of overall diesel cars sales was a steady 20% until the full impact of 'Dieselgate' - the story of which broke in 2015 - hit the diesel market from 2017/18. While many markets started to turn their backs on diesel quite quickly after this point, its importance to both German OEMs and to German car buyers resulted in Germany's share doubling within five years. That trend has continued to the present day and German car buyers now account for nearly 50% of all diesel car sales in the region.
