Five ways to extend your iPhone and Android battery life to give it a longer lifespan

Daily Record3 days ago
If you feel like your smartphone's battery life is quickly slipping through your fingers, here are five tips to help extend its lifespan.
Smartphones have quickly become our everyday companion. Whether its used for texting, calling, watching videos, scrolling social media or playing games, many of us will have our chosen branded smartphone within touching distance at all times.

The newest devices to fit the market now boast a range of advanced features and AI - most notable being Google Gemini, Apple Intelligence and Galaxy AI - which makes many of us feel like they have a mini super computer sitting in our pockets.

With so many people spending increasing amounts of time on their phones, whether that be for work or pleasure, you would hope that brands would be able to equip their devices with battery lives that can match this extended use. Sadly this is not the case, reports the Express.

In comparison to the Nokia mobile phones of the past which could last for more than a week on a single charge, smartphones today have much smaller batteries that need to be charged at least once a day. However, this reduction in battery make sense when you think about all of the new features it needs to power.
With brighter screens, powerful processors, cameras and a dozen more components to keep running, it's not a surprise that your battery dwindles to the end of its life at the end of the day.
However, for those who are seeing their battery drop away in the middle of the day when you still need it for a variety of important tasks, we have five top ways that you can stretch out your smartphone's battery life for longer, no matter if it's an iPhone or an Android.
Turn off auto brightness
One of the biggest battery drainers on your smartphone is the display. To allow you to see in all situations, whether you are under the glaring sun or tucked up in bed with the curtains closed, many smartphones come with an automatic brightness feature so users don't need to manually fiddle with the settings.
While this can be a helpful feature that many of us may not notice, it can have a big impact on your battery life. In order to save some much needed power, users can turn off the auto brightness feature on their smartphone and manually dim the screen's display to slightly darker than usual.
By turning off this feature, your phone will be able to conserve more battery and provide more minutes of power as the system won't be focused on adjusting to different levels of brightness as you go about your day.
To switch off the auto brightness on iPhone:
Settings > Accessibility > Display & Text Size > toggle off "Auto-Brightness'

On Android:
Settings > Display > toggle off 'Adaptive brightness', or similar wording
Turn on dark mode
The majority of the new shiny smartphones on the market boast an OLED display to provide users with a better and clearer viewing experience. This has been the case for every iPhone since the iPhone 12, as well as most of best-selling Android phones.

While this may make your TikTok videos and binge watches more vibrant, these OLED screens use more power to display white light in comparison to dark colours. This means for those who have their smartphones with the traditional white screens, your phone will be working overtime to power the display.
This can be lowered by switching your smartphone and apps to dark mode. This will save battery life as your phone will be displaying less white, bright, shining pixels.
To make the switch on iPhone:

On Android:
Settings > Display > select 'Dark'

Use power saving mode
The vast majority of smartphones possess a power saving feature to help extend their battery lives. By activating this feature, the phone will change a few settings to save power without cutting off any essential functions.

On iPhone:
Apple describes their low power mode as "temporarily reducing background activity like downloads and mail fetch until you can fully charge your iPhone."

Smartphones always have a variety of background processes working that can drain your battery, such as bringing in new emails to your inbox and downloading new podcasts. By turning these off, your phone will conserve power.
Additionally, for those with a Pro iPhone with Apple's ProMotion 120hz screen tech, this will be turned off while low power mode is activated.
On Android:

Settings > Battery > toggle on 'Power saving'
Once power saving is switched on, Android devices will limit app syncing, location services and some network usage. High refresh rates, background light timer and other modes can also be temporarily switched off to help lengthen the battery life.
Change display settings
No matter the smartphone model or brand you prefer, every device will have settings that can be altered to help preserve its battery life. While many of these will be switched when power saving mode is applied, many of these can also be done manually.

On iPhone:
Settings > Display & Brightness toggle off 'True Tone'
For those unaware of this setting, it adjusts the colour temperature of your screen according to the ambient light. To save battery life, shoppers can switch off this setting.

Pro iPhone users can also limit their refresh rate to 60Hz to conserve more battery. This is done by:
Accessibility > Motion > toggle on "Limit Frame Rate"
In terms of Android devices, as there are a multitude of brands under this system you will need to head to your own settings app to find how to reduce the resolution. Additionally, some models may also be able to reduce their high refresh rate.

Change charging settings
One setting that many people may not know about is the ability to adjust your smartphone's charging settings. While this may not help with your battery life at the moment, it may be able to extend your phone's battery for a couple more years.
Over time, phone batteries will start to deplete after being continuously charged. Sadly this is a fact that won't change, but there are steps you can take to put less stress on the battery.

On iPhone:
Settings > Battery > change the 'Charging limit'
From here Apple users can decrease the charge limit of their phone from 100 per cent down to 80 per cent. This means your phone won't ever charge more than your selected percentage. While this can prolong your battery life overall, it does mean users will lose 20 per cent of battery a day.

For those wanting to keep the charge at 100 per cent:
Settings > Battery > Charging > toggle on 'Optimised Battery Charging'
While your device will still charge to 100 per cent, it will keep the charge at 80 per cent until you need to use your phone. For example, if you charge your phone overnight and use it as a morning alarm, the device will only add the extra 20 per cent of charge closer to the alarm going off.

Meanwhile, Android devices have more settings. On Samsung phones:
From there Samsung users can choose between basic, adaptive or maximum levels of protection against battery degradation. Similar settings will be found on other Android devices.

How I use the three secret buttons on my iPhone to ‘hack' my sleep, road trips, holidays & save time every day

The third trick was only added last year TAP TIPS! How I use the three secret buttons on my iPhone to 'hack' my sleep, road trips, holidays & save time every day Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) YOUR iPhone has a bunch of secret buttons – and they'll change the way you use your phone every day. There are clever tricks for road trips, going on holiday, and even there's one time-saving trick you'll wonder how you lived without. That includes these three secret buttons you might never have even heard of. SECRET BUTTON 1 – ACCESSIBILITY SHORTCUT First up is the Accessibility Shortcut, which is hiding in plain sight on the outside of your iPhone. You know the Side Button? It's the one that you use to lock your iPhone with a click, or to pull up Siri by holding down. Well it has a secret function that you can trigger by clicking it three times. And you can change that function by going into Settings > Accessibility > Accessibility Shortcut. I usually have mine set to one of two things. My main pick is Background Sounds, which makes my iPhone play rain noises. This is great when you need to shut out the outside world. It also works in the background of podcasts too, which is nice. And it's a handy way to get off to sleep, if you struggle with that. iPhone 16e review – I've secretly tested Apple's cheapest mobile and I love the new button but that's not the best bit You can also change the sound that it plays by going into Settings > Accessibility > Audio & Visual > Background Sounds. A second option is setting Accessibility Shortcut to Vehicle Motion Cues. This puts moving dots on the screen to try to help you avoid motion sickness when you're in a car. The dots match the motion of the vehicle to give your eyes a reference point, reducing the effect that triggers the nausea. I tested Vehicle Motion Cues on a road trip earlier this year, and I was impressed with the results. 7 You can set the triple-click to do lots of different things Credit: Sean Keach / The Sun SECRET BUTTON 2 – BACK TAP Another very handy option is Back Tap, which turns the back of your mobile into a button. You choose a function, and then you can trigger it by tapping the back of your phone. Better yet, you can have one function for a double-tap, and then a different one for a triple-tap. 7 The Touch settings let you unlock Back Tap Credit: Sean Keach / The Sun To find it, just go to Settings > Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap. There are loads of choices. For double-tap, I've got it set to take a screenshot. You'll use this every day – it's just so handy. And for triple-tap, I have it on Shazam. That's the clever feature that identifies a song that's playing nearby – maybe on the radio or in a shop. 7 You can assign two different functions to Back Tap Credit: Sean Keach / The Sun SECRET BUTTON 3 – LOCK SCREEN SWAP How often do you use your phone's torch? Probably not enough to need a shortcut on the Lock Screen for constant access. Well in iOS 18 (go to Settings > General > Software Update to see if you've got the update), you can swap out the torch and camera icons for something else. The camera is pretty useful (unless you've got a newer iPhone with the built-in camera button). 7 Go into your Lock Screen editing settings to swap out the shortcuts Credit: Sean Keach / The Sun But you can probably get away with swapping out the torch, as you can access that via the Control Centre or Siri easily enough. Just hold down on the Lock Screen, tap customise, choose Lock Screen, then tap on the torch to replace it. I've got mine set to open my Reminders app, because I use it all the time. But you can have it open almost any app, or perform loads of different functions. If one doesn't exist, you can tap on Shortcuts to create exactly what you want it to do. 7 You could replace the torch with almost anything Credit: Sean Keach / The Sun A good option for holidays is setting it to launch the Translate app, but the choice is totally yours. And if you decide you hate it, you can always go back to the plain old torch.

These tricks are genuinely useful – but you'll have to stick with them. We've all been using our iPhones the same way for years. So changing a daily habit can be difficult, and might feel awkward at first. Like the screenshot trick above: you've been doing screengrabs one way for an age, so moving to something else might feel weird at first. But having switched to this method, it's so much easier. And by grabbing the new habit, I've found myself using Back Tap to open Shazam a lot more too. It's a similar story for changing your Lock Screen shortcuts. At first, it'll feel totally weird – but after a few weeks, you'll wonder how you lived the old way. Stick with it, and it's worth it. I promise.
