Police helicopter wreckage retrieved from Johor's Sungai Pulai, black box next in probe
The wreckage of the twin-engine light utility helicopter was earlier floated above the water level at 11am, before being lifted onto a by crane into a salvage vessel about 15 minutes later.
The operation, which started at 8am, saw the salvage vessel and two Marine Police Force (MPF) patrol boats at the location of the helicopter's crash site before raising the wreckage.
Clear and favourable weather conditions helped the Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) and MPF divers in the wreckage recovery efforts.
At the nearby Sungai Pulai operations centre, representatives from the police, RMN, Air Accident Investigation Bureau, Tanjung Pelepas Port, Johor Port Authority, the Fire and Rescue Department and Health Ministry were at hand to assist in the recovery efforts.
Following the successful recovery, investigators will probe into the helicopter's communication recording device that is believed to be inside the wreckage.
Last Thursday, the Airbus AS355N police helicopter with registration number 9M-PHG crashed while performing a flypast simulation in conjunction with the Multi-Directional Exercise on Nuclear Security Detection, Malaysia-Indonesia-Thailand-Singapore (MITSATOM) 2025 joint exercise.
However, the helicopter's five crew members, who are police personnel, survived the crash.
The incident left two crew members, Constable RG Devendran from the Tanjung Kupang police station and Corporal Adeline Liu Yan Sin, from the police air unit, in critical condition.
The helicopter's pilot, Assistant Commissioner Faizul Muhammad; his co-pilot, Superintendent Ahmad Bustamin Baharom and Sergeant Siti Latipa Khairuddin were reported to be recovering and in stable condition.
All five victims are currently receiving treatment at the Sultanah Aminah Hospital (HSA) here.
The Airbus AS355N, prior to that it was under Eurocopter, is a popular variant and used by both private individuals and companies, private helicopter charter, as well as law enforcement and government service.
The police currently operate a fleet of five Airbus AS355N helicopters since taking delivery in 1996.

'An initial investigation found that the car had been driven by the mother of the two siblings from the Bandar Sultan Suleiman area at North Klang Port to her sister's house in Telok Gong, Klang. The mother had left the children for a moment to go to the toilet. 'When the woman left to go to the toilet, the 11-year-old child took the car keys and drove the younger sibling and their cousin to a shop,' he said in a statement. He said the child drove for 2km before losing control of the vehicle when approaching the shop area, causing it to skid into a drain by the roadside. No one was injured, and the front part of the car was slightly damaged. Police have recorded statements from the parents of the child driver and are investigating the case under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless driving, Section 39(1) of the same law for driving without a licence (underage), as well as the Child Act 2001 to identify any elements of child neglect.

Ex-military, police officers to serve as wardens at 2 Mara colleges

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) has appointed retired military and police officers as hostel wardens for two Mara Junior Science Colleges (MRSMs) under a pilot initiative starting next month. Mara chairman Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki said the two colleges are MRSM Besut in Terengganu and MRSM Balik Pulau in Penang, with the appointment of not more than 10 male and female wardens, Bernama reported. 'We have conducted a series of interviews and we've shortlisted candidates. God willing, they will begin their duties in August. 'The standard operating procedures have also been provided and we will continue with the training,' he told reporters after opening the Bukit Gantan Umno meeting today. In April, Asyraf announced Mara's plan to appoint hostel wardens from among former police and military personnel for selected MRSMs to curb bullying. He said Mara would monitor the six-month trial period to evaluate the pros and cons of the initiative. Asyraf said today the appointment of wardens from among retired military and police personnel did not mean they would use harsh disciplinary methods. 'We are starting this initiative with clear SOPs and strong foundational guidelines so that our children receive proper supervision and attention for their development in a safe hostel environment. 'We want to reassure parents that we do not compromise when it comes to bullying, be it physical or mental,' he said. FMT previously quoted criminologist Shahul Hamid Abd Rahim as urging Mara not to grant full authority to former military and police officers appointed as hostel wardens at MRSMs. Shahul Hamid said proper supervision and clear SOPs were needed to manage students, not harsh methods, commonly used in training security forces. He said there was a real concern that these former officers might rely on a forceful approach towards students. Last month, six students from MRSM Besut were expelled for bullying a 14-year-old student. In April, seven students from an MRSM campus in Penang faced expulsion after a video showing the bullying of a fellow male student went viral.

2 varsity students among 3 fined for having porn on handphones

(Bernama pic) KOTA BHARU : Three men, including two university students, were fined between RM3,000 and RM4,000 in the magistrates' court here today after they pleaded guilty to possessing pornographic videos and images on June 18. Al Azamuddin Al Fadzil, 22, and Syahmi Firas Jurij, 27, were fined RM4,000 each, while Hanafi Ibrahim, 47, was fined RM3,000 after pleading guilty to the charges read separately to them before magistrate Wan Izzat Wan Abdullah. The trio were charged with possessing pornographic images and videos on their mobile phones at a house at Jalan Kemumin in Kampung Pulau Belacan, Panchor, here at 1.15am on June 18. They were charged under Section 292 of the Penal Code, which provides for a prison sentence of up to three years or a fine, or both, upon conviction. Deputy public prosecutors Nadzir Abdullah and Nur Haziqah Hassan prosecuted, while the accused were represented by lawyer Chong Yin Xin. Earlier, Nadzir and Haziqah requested the court to impose an appropriate sentence as a lesson to society, considering the accused's immoral actions and violation of public norms. However, Chong requested that her clients be given the minimum possible fine because they had repented and promised to change. 'My client Hanafi has a health problem and underwent brain surgery in 2016. He is currently supported by his sister, who is a person with disabilities and working in a restaurant.
