Smartphones have become the most popular tool for photography. A recent study revealed that 94% of the trillions of photos taken in 2024 were captured using smartphone cameras. Despite the popularity, a noticeable quality gap remains between smartphone cameras and mirrorless cameras. This is especially true for telephoto lenses, which often suffer from lower-grade sensors due to size and cost limitations.
HUAWEI has announced a solution to this issue with its new Pura 80 Ultra smartphone. The device features a Switchable Dual Telephoto Camera, combining a 3.7x medium telephoto and a 9.4x super-telephoto lens that share a single large sensor. This setup brings the telephoto camera quality in line with that of main cameras on flagship phones.
The large sensor, along with updated image processing algorithms, significantly improves low-light photography. According to HUAWEI, the Ultra Chroma Camera enhances detail restoration and color accuracy, particularly in long-distance and low-light conditions.
Users can now capture high-quality images even at challenging events such as concerts or on wildlife safaris. The Pura 80 Ultra excels in scenarios with difficult lighting thanks to its ability to handle color saturation and dynamic range effectively.
• The 3.7x telephoto lens produces flattering portraits with shallow depth of field.
• The 9.4x super-telephoto lens enables close-ups from long distances without sacrificing detail.
HUAWEI also revealed that the main camera has undergone a major upgrade. The 1-inch Ultra Lighting HDR Camera delivers superior performance with an exceptional dynamic range of 16EV. The F1.6-F4.0 variable aperture enhances light intake, improving clarity in both bright and dark environments.
The AI Cinematic Engine enables the Pura 80 Ultra to record video with balanced exposure and vibrant detail. Whether capturing backlit portraits or flames in night scenes, the camera maintains lifelike color reproduction and realistic lighting.
With this launch, HUAWEI aims to close the gap between smartphone and professional photography. The Pura 80 Ultra offers users creative freedom that was once only possible with dedicated camera equipment.
Huawei Consumer Business Group continues to expand its global reach. With operations in over 170 countries and a wide range of smart devices, HUAWEI remains committed to innovation and intelligent user experiences.

Huawei reaches the top of China's smartphone market

Huawei has claimed the lead position in China's smartphone market for the first time in over four years, despite overall shipments in the nation falling 4 per cent year-on-year in Q2 2025. Data from IDC's latest Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker report revealed that total shipments dropped to 69 million units, marking the first decline in the country's smartphone market following six consecutive quarters of growth. The downturn was attributed to limited impact from government subsidies and weak consumer confidence. In an economically uncertain market, Huawei led with 12.5 million units shipped, capturing an 18.1 per cent market share despite a 3.4 per cent decline. Will Wong, Senior Research Manager for Client Devices at IDC Asia Pacific, credited Huawei's rebound to 'its strong brand appeal and effective shipment management'. Vivo ranked second with 11.9 million units, down 10.1 per cent, while Oppo followed with 10.7 million units, falling 5 per cent. Xiaomi was the only top five vendor to record annual growth during the quarter, driven by its appeal amongst price-sensitive consumers, Wong noted. Apple rounded out the top five, with 9.6 million units shipped and a 1.3 per cent decline. Despite its downturn, Wong explained the iPhone-maker managed to narrow its losses by adjusting prices to make select iPhone 16 and 16 Pro models eligible for government subsidies. Rebound unlikely IDC also flagged headwinds tied to the country's subsidy scheme. Arthur Guo, senior research analyst at IDC China, noted that disruptions in the rollout of subsidies dampened demand. 'We anticipate a gradual resumption,' he said, though he cautioned that broader economic uncertainties would continue to weigh on consumer confidence. Indeed, Guo warned that although the recent US-China trade truce might have eased geopolitical tensions, a rebound in smartphone demand is 'unlikely in the immediate term' as the market will face a 'more complex landscape' in the second half of the year.
