September 2025 marks 200 years since the first steam-hauled passenger train ran on a public railway, from Stockton to Darlington, in 1825. To celebrate this incredible anniversary, Michael Portillo is set to take audiences on a journey through time with a two-part series: 200 Years of The Railways which will air on BBC Two later this year.
Produced by Naked West, a Fremantle label, the two one-hour specials will see Michael Portillo travel by train to the Northeast and Northwest of England and investigate what the railways have done for us over the past 200 years and explore what the railways' role could be in the future.
The special comes as two brand new series - Great Continental Railway Journeys and Great British Railway Journeys - return to screens on BBC Two from 10 March.
Great Continental Railway Journeys will see Michael embark on a new journey, exploring some of Europe's most beautiful and historic regions, from Switzerland to Croatia and Bosnia, Norway and Denmark to Normandy and Brittany as he uncovers how nature and history have shaped life in some of the most enchanting settings on the continent.

Davina McCall's partner's heartbreaking admission after her brain tumour surgery

Our community members are treated to special offers, promotions and adverts from us and our partners. You can check out at any time. More info Michael Douglas, the partner of iconic TV host Davina McCall, shared his concerns about her battle with a benign brain tumour, detailing the anxious moments during her recovery. The former Big Brother presenter stunned her followers last November when she disclosed her diagnosis of a colloid cyst. The 57-year-old underwent surgery to remove the tumour, and Michael, a hairdresser by profession, has now spoken about the challenging period that ensued. Speaking on Ireland AM, Michael said: "The brain surgery was, what, 15th of November, so I thought, you know, by Christmas, we would be out of the woods and all that. "But we weren't actually, it took a long time. In the end I remember saying, ok, let's give it until April, and we will see where we are and if we are not back in April, then I am going to start worrying." (Image: John Phillips, Getty Images) Fortunately, Davina has made a remarkable recovery, and he joyfully shared: "Just towards the end of April, everything just like dropped back into place, and I was like, 'oh wow', you know. "And she looked at me and she said, 'I'm back, like, I'm totally back.' And I was like, 'Then so am I." The discovery of the benign tumour came as a shock during a joint health screening that Davina and Michael, who first crossed paths two decades ago on the set of Big Brother, attended together. Reflecting on the experience, Michael, who started dating Davina in 2019, expressed his surprise: "I came out completely clear. And I abused my body quite badly, you know. "And she was like, 'Oh my god, I've got a brain tumour.' We were like, 'What?' So yeah, it was a big shock." Davina has become a vocal advocate for individuals with benign tumours, emphasising that 'benign doesn't mean fine'. Michael provided a stark view on the potential consequences if Davina's tumour had gone undetected, stating: "She had the tumour her whole life apparently, but it had grown and it was filling the entire space. (Image:) "And if grew any more, which they didn't know whether it would or wouldn't, then she could have had quite a severe stroke, or something like that. "So it was a case of saying, let's get it out before you have to get it out in an emergency situation." In a recent chat with Women's Health UK, Davina lauded her partner for his unwavering support during her health ordeal. She remembered sharing her "true feelings" with him prior to surgery, saying: "I said I felt really scared. I had a massive cry... he said that when we first got together, he was like, 'You're quite hard to look after, how do I do that?'" Yet, demonstrating his devotion, he stayed by her side throughout her recovery, with Davina recalling his words: "You know, I've been training for this moment. And I'm ready, you know, I've got your back." Having received the all clear post-surgery, Davina updated her Instagram followers this month, announcing: "I am feeling much, much, much better. I am nearly ready to drive, which is a big indicator of how I'm feeling."

BBC show hit with complaints over 'brutal' scenes that leave 'children crying'

BBC's Springwatch has been hit with even more complaints following more 'harrowing scenes' on the wildlife show Springwatch fans have been left fuming with the BBC Two show once again, as the the wildlife show aired harrowing scenes, leaving viewers distressed. Yesterday, hosts Chris Packham and Dancing on Ice star Michaela Strachan taking a look at footage of a tawny owl and song thrushes. ‌ The chicks had been doing well, until things took a drastic turn as one song thrush decided to leave the nest. ‌ Later on, viewers were shown distressing footage of a tawny owl bringing in one of the song thrushes - as things went from bad to worse. "What happened next at 11.06pm was the tawny owl returned and obviously it would come to this nest and grab those chicks," Chris explained. Viewers were then shown distressing scenes of the owl pecking at the chicks, as Chris continued: "Very rapidly it killed the chicks in the nest using its talons and then took hold of one of them and make its way out of the back of the nest." However, fans were left unimpressed as they took to X, formerly known as Twitter to complain. One penned: "Well done #springwatch Tens of thousands of children now crying and in distress!" Another devastated fan penned: "Sad part of nature…. That poor thrush nest with chicks an owl took them," a third said: "Oh no not the thrushes :(". ‌ However, the complaints aren't uncommon. It comes just days after viewers were left fuming that they weren't given a warning after the show failed to warn them before airing gruesome scenes. In an episode last week, fans saw hosts Chris Packham and Michaela Strachan update fans on a short-eared owl's nest, but things took a turn for the worst when one chick was "pecked to death" by its sibling. "It seems like they were all being fed, and just yesterday I was saying that one was doing well. But I'm afraid in that nest things took a turn for the worst," Michaela said, before telling viewers how one chick ate its sibling in "shocking" scenes. ‌ The gruesome scenes were then played out, however, viewers were left horrified as they were given no warning. "As you can see, that little one became week and defenceless, and that stronger sibling took complete advantage and started pecking at the younger one who was still alive," the hosts said as the scenes played out. Michaela did apologise for the "hard to watch scenes," as she continued: "It pecked it to death. That was really surprising to us, because as Chris said they were fed four times." However, fans were still furious at the lack of warning.
