Kittur Rani Chennamma Mini Zoo undergoes Rs 2.6cr upgrade
The zoo, spread across 34.4 hectares, is being upgraded to meet the criteria of a Medium Zoo, with plans to expand an additional 20 hectares to accommodate more enclosures.
Four major projects are almost complete and are expected to be inaugurated for public access by December this year. The key works consist of a state-of-the-art reptile park, a new crocodile enclosure, and a gigantic, illuminated entry tower featuring a statue of freedom fighter Kittur Rani Chennamma.
Reptile park to feature exotic species
One of the most anticipated additions is the upcoming reptile park, which will house 12 exotic snake species in male-female pairs. The line-up includes the King Cobra, Rattlesnake, Rock Python, Reticulated Python, Green Anaconda, Lake Snake and Monitor Lizard. The King Cobra and large pythons are expected to be star attractions.
Crocodile enclosure
A new 1,200-square-metre crocodile enclosure is also under construction.
While a Mugger crocodile already resides at the zoo, two Gharials will soon join the enclosure. Meanwhile, a vibrant bird zone has been established, featuring species such as lovebirds, cockatiels, sun conures, zebra finches and rose-ringed parakeets.
An exclusive section showcasing distinct sheep breeds from across India is also being developed. Additionally, the construction of a museum and an auditorium is in progress to enhance visitor engagement and learning.
A 65-foot-tall iconic signage structure has been installed at the zoo's entrance. Adorned with illuminated logos and topped with a statue of Rani Chennamma, the tower is designed to be visible from over a kilometre away, improving visibility and attracting travellers on the highway.
Towards Medium Zoo status
According to range forest officer Pavan Kuraning, a proposal will be sent to the Central Zoo Authority of India by the end of this month, seeking approval for upgradation. "We plan to expand the zoo by another 20 hectares to increase animal enclosures," he told the TOI.
The zoo currently operates a safari and houses 216 animals and birds, including three tigers, two lions, three leopards, bears, blackbucks, sambar deer, hyenas and jackals.

Rs 24,000 Crore Plan Cleared To Tackle Delhi's Traffic Congestion
New Delhi: In a significant step towards addressing Delhi's chronic traffic congestion, the Centre and the Delhi government have cleared nine major infrastructure projects worth Rs 24,000 crore. The projects include a mix of tunnels, flyovers, metro extensions, and new roads aimed at cutting travel time, reducing pollution, and making daily commutes smoother for millions in Delhi-NCR. Officials confirmed that all projects are expected to be completed by 2027, with work set to begin in phases starting this year. The approval comes as a joint effort to address some of the city's worst traffic points and expand public transport options. One of the most anticipated moves is the 12.3-kilometre extension of the Pink Line Metro from Majlis Park to Maujpur. This final stretch will complete the circular Pink Line and create a metro ring road, allowing passengers to travel across Delhi without switching lines or stepping out onto congested roads. In South Delhi, a new elevated corridor between AIIMS and Mahipalpur Bypass has been approved to ease the notoriously slow commute towards the airport. The corridor will serve thousands of daily commuters moving between South Extension, Dhaula Kuan, and IGI Airport. A 5-kilometre tunnel from Shiv Murti to Vasant Kunj, which will link National Highway 48 with Mahipalpur and Vasant Kunj, has also been added. Officials say this will drastically reduce congestion in one of the city's most traffic-prone zones. Outer Delhi will also see major upgrades. Flyovers and underpasses are planned along Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) and the Gurugram-Jaipur Highway to streamline heavy vehicle movement. New roads connecting Rohini, Narela, and Bawana have also been approved to improve connectivity in rapidly expanding residential and industrial areas. To ease pressure on the Delhi-Noida corridor, additional underpasses and service roads will be built around the DND Flyway. Authorities say this will help manage peak-hour traffic and reduce spillover jams on connecting routes. The redevelopment of New Delhi Railway Station is also on the list. While the focus will be on improving passenger amenities, a major part of the plan involves streamlining vehicle movement outside the station premises, one of the city's worst traffic zones during rush hours. Connectivity to long-distance expressways is also being addressed. Flyovers and service roads will be added to improve Delhi's link to the Delhi-Katra Expressway, making long-distance travel easier and reducing congestion at exit points. For flyers, road and tunnel upgrades around the airport will create quicker and smoother access to IGI, easing the burden on roads around Aerocity and Mahipalpur. The Rs 24,000 crore cost will be shared by the central and Delhi governments. Officials say tenders and planning are already underway and that the city could start seeing construction activity in several zones by early next year. "This is not a patchwork fix," said a senior official told NDTV. "We're talking about a complete reworking of how people move across Delhi. If we stay on schedule, this could fundamentally change commuting in the city by 2027."

Beaches To Hills: Where To Work Without The Noise In Under Rs 5000 Budget
Last Updated: The charm of budget workation is that it asks very little of you. No itinerary. No pressure to perform. Just show up, do your work, and be somewhere quieter than your usual chaos. Somewhere between your fourth cup of coffee and your third Zoom call of the day, the thought creeps in: What if I just left? Not to run away, not to drop everything, but to take work along for the ride. Just you, your laptop, a bit of peace, and a new view. This, right here, is where the workation was born. Not quite a holiday. Not quite the grind. A workation is the in-between that more and more urban Indians are embracing. It's the weekend plan that doesn't need leave approval. The mini escape that doesn't ask you to ghost your boss. And contrary to what Instagram might have you believe, it doesn't require Rs 25,000, a drone camera, or a beach in Bali. No Budget Planning Required In fact, you can pull off a soulful, productive workation for under Rs5,000. The trick lies in knowing where to go, when to leave, and what to carry. Let's say you leave Friday night from Delhi or Chandigarh and land up in Bir, Himachal Pradesh. Its a place where the air smells of pine, the cafés are quiet, and the WiFi is surprisingly decent. For Rs500 a night, you get a clean bed, a small desk, and the kind of silence your city apartment has never heard. You finish your calls by afternoon and step out to watch paragliders dot the evening sky. Or maybe you're based in Mumbai or Pune. You hop on a bus to Panchgani, strawberry land, boarding school nostalgia, and soft breezes that make your thoughts feel less heavy. You work from a cottage where the internet works well enough, the food is home-cooked, and the evenings are for walking without purpose. You're still replying to Slack, but somehow it doesn't sting. For those near the south, Varkala is a gem. You sit in a cliffside café answering emails while waves crash below. Between meetings, you sip chai. After hours, you walk barefoot to the beach and let the salt wind untangle something you didn't even know was knotted. The charm of a budget workation is that it asks very little of you. No itinerary. No pressure to perform. Just show up, do your work, and be somewhere quieter than your usual chaos. You're not trying to reinvent yourself. You're just trying to breathe easier while meeting deadlines. Here is a List Of Places from Across India for your Next Workcation Plan: North India: Mountains, Mist, and Monasteries Bir, Himachal Pradesh Paragliding capital by day, silent cafés by night. Ideal for solo workers looking for WiFi and wide skies. Jibhi, Himachal Pradesh Wooden cottages, pine forests, and barely-there traffic. Good for long stays with slow pace and focused work. Lansdowne, Uttarakhand A quiet cantonment with colonial charm and clean air. Less crowded, more meditative, ideal for reflection-heavy work. Rishikesh, Uttarakhand Work with Ganga views, take yoga breaks in between. Spiritual yet connected, perfect for balancing stress. South India: Cliffs, Beaches, and Backwaters Varkala, Kerala Cliffside cafés with strong coffee and stronger WiFi. Post-work swims and sunset walks come free. Coonoor, Tamil Nadu Tea gardens, chill weather, and old-world cottages. A calm, green workspace without weekend crowds. Gokarna, Karnataka Laid-back beaches where deadlines feel less heavy. Hostels and cafés are plenty, and the sunsets are spectacular. Araku Valley, Andhra Pradesh Train journeys through tunnels, valleys, and tribal art. A scenic, low-distraction zone with fresh coffee plantations. West India: Hills, Forts, and Chill Zones Panchgani, Maharashtra A strawberry-scented escape just hours from Pune. Hostels, homestays, and valley views keep it budget and breezy. Mount Abu, Rajasthan Rajasthan's only hill station with cool nights and lakeside calm. Good road access and decent data speed. Saputara, Gujarat A hidden hill town with cable cars and lake views. Fewer tourists, more birdsong and just enough signal. Toranmal, Maharashtra Remote, forested, and totally off-grid but in the best way. Ideal for deep work or creative writing retreats. East and Northeast India: Clouds, Cafés, and Culture Kalimpong, West Bengal Less noisy than Darjeeling, with postcard views. Local markets and homestays make it perfect for longer stays. Majuli, Assam The world's largest river island with bamboo huts and Vaishnavite culture. Great for a digital detox that still lets you check Slack. Shillong, Meghalaya Live music, misty mornings, and good WiFi in cafés. Urban but green, and surprisingly affordable off-season. Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh High-altitude, slow-paced, and deeply meditative. Not for the faint of bandwidth, but perfect for unplugged creators. Ignore The Noise Of course, there are hiccups. Power cuts happen. Hotspots fail. You may have to take a client call from a cafe where a dog barks every ten minutes. But these things become part of the memory. In a strange way, they make you smile later. Because what you get in return is perspective. Time to think. A reminder that life isn't just traffic, bills, and blurred screens. It's also misty mornings, chai with strangers, and the ability to carry your life somewhere softer even if only for 48 hours. Workations aren't about productivity hacks or escaping reality. They're about making peace with it. Logging in, but also looking up. Earning a living, but also remembering how to live. So next weekend, maybe don't book that brunch. Don't scroll through more shows. Pack a bag, take your laptop, and see what happens when you change your backdrop, not your job. Chances are, it'll cost you less than your monthly broadband bill. And give you more clarity than your manager ever could.
