Glasgow congestion charge risks ‘displacement of business'

It comes as Glasgow City Council is to discuss plans that would also include a charge for the Clyde Tunnel. Stuart Patrick, chief executive of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce, warned over the move. READ MORE: He said: "We cannot support a city-wide congestion charge until public transport improvements have been made in line with the conclusions of the Connectivity Commission. "We are very concerned about the possible displacement of business out of Glasgow. 'We believe the City Council needs support from the Scottish Government to deliver priority transport projects such as the Clyde Metro and the Glasgow City Region Bus Partnership improvement plan." Glasgow parking permit prices rise by hundreds - how much will you pay?

The price of parking permits in Glasgow has risen by hundreds of pounds for drivers across the city. From Tuesday, resident parking fees will be based on a vehicle's carbon emissions and the number of permits issued to each address. It means that instead of paying £85 a year to park your car in most of the city, drivers now face paying up to £220 – for the most polluting vehicles. The cost could be even higher for those in a household with multiple vehicles. If you require a fourth parking permit, residents will have to pay up to £595 a year. However, those with low-emission electric or hybrid cars will pay a slightly reduced price of £80. Previously, the cost of a parking permit varied depending on your neighbourhood. Areas such as Hillhead and and Garnethill had the lowest price of £85. While city centre residents were charged £325. But from Tuesday, August 19, the prices are the same across Glasgow. A resident parking permit allows you to park in an on-street parking space within the zone stated on your permit. The council says the new pricing structure is in line with current vehicle tax rates that are charged by the DVLA. CO2 emissions/# of permit First Second Third Fourth 0 – 50g/km £80 £205 £330 £445 51 – 150g/km £150 £275 £400 £525 151 – 190g/km £170 £295 £420 £545 191 – 225g/km £195 £320 £445 £570 226+ g/km £220 £335 £470 £595 The new approach to parking permit charges comes after Glasgow hit its air pollution target for the first time. Glasgow's Low Emission Zone (LEZ) came into force on June 1, 2023, and was set up to cut emissions and pollution by stopping older vehicles from entering the city centre. Air pollution has been falling since the LEZ came into effect two years ago, and the reductions have been 'greater than predicted', a council report found. Following the initial positive results in the first year, a council committee report said there were further 'significant reductions' in the levels of pollution across the city in 2024, particularly within the area of the LEZ. It was the first time Glasgow met all of its statutory air pollution objectives since the Local Air Quality Management process was established in 1995. As well as updating the parking permit charges, Glasgow City Council is investigating the possibility of rolling out a congestion charge and a Clyde Tunnel toll as part of efforts to reduce car use and increase revenue. Glasgow cafe wants to rival Starbucks to do this amazing thing

Craig Johnson, founder of Launch Foods, joked he would like to open beside 'every Starbucks in the city and give them a doing' as he revealed the news. The former banker and restaurateur admitted feeling ambivalent about his charity's landmark achievement. Craig Johnson (Image: Newsquest) 'We're chasing down one million free meals, which one side of me thinks is great,' he said. 'The other, the proud Scot in me, thinks it's atrocious because it shouldn't be happening. 'We need to do more, though, because that allows me to fund the charity and its activities feeding kids. I would dearly love to sit alongside every Starbucks in the city and give them a doing, in the nicest possible way.' Speaking on the Murphy Wealth Human First podcast, Craig added: 'There are other ways we can feed even more children, with the right support. I don't view Launch as a success story – nowhere near it. 'We're still in challenging times, but the challenges are part of the journey.' Launch food truck (Image: Newsquest) Craig, who owned the Merchant City's popular Loop restaurant, began Launch Foods in 2018, visiting Glasgow schools in an American-style Airstream Rocket caravan. 'I happened to be watching the news one evening, and they were talking about food surplus, which is madness – tonnes of food being disposed of, inefficiencies in the food sector,' he said. 'I'm getting a bit grumpy, so I turned the channel only to hear about food scarcity, showing images of Glasgow. 'I thought they'd got the wrong video, until they explained that one in four kids in the city are living in poverty and in certain parts it's one in two.' Craig Johnson (Image: Newsquest) He added: 'Given what I'd watched a couple of minutes beforehand, I thought, how can I connect these things? But doing it in a way that avoids stigma? 'And that's how Launch came about.' Big food and drink companies donate surplus products, which are then used to produce nutritious meals and snacks at the charity's base in Anniesland Business Park. 'I promote it to the kids that they are helping us with the environment, and we feed every child at the end of the school day to avoid any stigma,' added Craig. The first Launch Coffee café opened on Bothwell Street in 2022, helping to provide a regular income stream to fund an after-school meal for every pupil at six Glasgow primaries. Earlier this year, the charity secured a property on Cresswell Street – just off Byres Road – to open its second Launch Coffee, and talks are also underway on a third location. With the extra sales, Launch Foods now hopes to exceed the one-million-free-meals milestone in the next few weeks. Craig is one of a series of prominent Scottish businesspeople interviewed by Murphy Wealth CEO Adrian Murphy for Human First. Previous guests include Scotland and Glasgow Warriors international turned entrepreneur Adam Ashe, Sub Club founder Mike Grieve, and former Dyson and Volvo Cars CEO Jim Rowan.
