India on precipice of amazing, undeniable global soft power: Comedian Vir Das

India is on the precipice of an "amazing, undeniable" global soft power whose "guardians" in equal measure are both those living in the homeland as well as the Indian diaspora, Emmy-Award winning comedian and actor Vir Das has said."I think something that the diaspora does really well is protect culture," Das said here during a special interaction hosted at Asia Society.
Das, who won the 2023 International Emmy for Best Comedy for his comedy special 'Landing', said amid applause and laughter from the audience at the event that what he finds "lovely" about the Indian diaspora is that while they have an American accent and American values, but "at your shaadi, you (dance) to 'Mehendi laga ke rakhna'.The Asia Society event on Thursday was presented in collaboration with global media platform, community and agency South Asian Trailblazers and was held on the eve of the premiere of Das's latest comedy special 'Vir Das: Fool Volume'."India is on the precipice of an amazing, undeniable global soft power, and it only translates when the bridge happens from me to you. So we are both ends carrying that soft power," Das said, a message for the Indian diaspora settled across the world.
"We are both guardians of India's soft power at an equal level." Citing the example of Indian actor and singer Diljit Dosanjh, who became the first Punjabi singer to perform at the popular Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in California in 2023, Das said, "When Diljit performs at Coachella, that is an amazing, undeniable thing." "The diaspora has to show up to pack Coachella. When he shows up in India, we'll pack it for him. But when he comes to Coachella, show up, for modern Indian culture," he said.Das, who was first nominated for the 2021 International Emmy for Comedy for his previous Netflix special 'Vir Das: For India', had hosted the prestigious global awards last year.Responding to a question during the interactive Q&A session with the audience on what are some of the things the next generation should adopt from the current one, Das said one would be to know "that India is far more open-minded than you think it is. I say this with all due respect to the diaspora."Sometimes you are raised in a time capsule version of India, that is the last version of India that your parents left behind, and that India doesn't exist anymore," he said to applause from the audience.
Das added that "You are raised in more conservative households than we are, many times. So, please come and visit modern India." "Come and visit a place that does everything from Diljit to Mika to 'RRR' to 'Hanumankind'," Das said, referring to the popular Indian artists, the blockbuster movie which won the Oscar for Best Original Song at the 2023 Academy Awards for 'Naatu, Naatu' and the India-born rapper Sooraj Cherukat.Das underlined that there are things happening in India right now that kids of the Indian diaspora need to know."The second thing is that it is okay to be flawed. I feel like children who are raised in the diaspora, you are under tremendous pressure to have model minority behaviour, more so than kids who are raised back home" because opportunities are far more scarce.
"It is a smaller community here, but try and create the abundance mindset that you had when there were a billion jobs for you. I know that there are fewer jobs, that's a very tough mindset to create, but I think your child would be better served by creating that mindset," Das said.

Saiyaara: All The Box Office Records Broken By Ahaan Panday And Aneet Padda's Debut Film

New Delhi: Yash Raj Films and director Mohit Suri's new romantic drama, Saiyaara, has taken the box office by storm. Starring debutant Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda, the film has delivered one of the biggest openings for a newcomer-led film in Indian cinema history. Record-Breaking Opening Day Released on July 18, Saiyaara earned Rs 25 crore (approx. $2.9 million) on its first day in India. According to figures from YRF, nearly 9.75 lakh people watched the film in theatres on Day 1. This is the biggest opening day ever for a Hindi film led by debutants. It surpassed the record set by Dhadak (Rs 8.76 crore) in 2018. The film also had the highest opening day for a romantic film in recent years, ahead of Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani (Rs 11.1 crore), Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya (Rs 6.7 crore), Tu Jhoothi Main Makkar (Rs 15.73 crore), and Kabir Singh (Rs 20.21 crore). Highest Opening Day Ticket Sales For A Debut Film Saiyaara recorded Rs 9.39 crore in advance bookings before its release, with 3.8 lakh tickets sold. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh reported that 1.38 lakh tickets were sold across national chains, including 1.05 lakh in PVR INOX and 33,000 in Cinepolis. This is the highest opening day ticket sales for a debut film since 2000, when Kaho Naa... Pyaar Hai and Refugee made headlines for their strong openings. Best Opening Of Mohit Suri's Career Director Mohit Suri, known for films like Aashiqui 2 and Ek Villain, has delivered his career-best opening with Saiyaara. The film's Rs 21 crore nett opening beats Ek Villain (Rs 16.70 crore), Murder 2 (Rs 6.95 crore), and Aashiqui 2 (Rs 6.10 crore). Fewer Shows, Bigger Impact What makes the film's success more notable is that it achieved this with just 8,000 screenings across India, less than half of the average 18,000 shows usually needed for such collections. Despite this, several theatres reported sold-out shows in major cities. Saiyaara Enters Top 5 Highest Opening Weekends Of 2025 Globally, Saiyaara grossed $11.9 million in its opening weekend, placing it at number 9 on the global box office chart, as per Comscore. In India, the two-day gross stood at $6.6 million, with Sunday numbers expected to push the total higher. The total weekend collection has reached Rs 83 crore, making it one of the top five highest opening weekends of 2025. Ahead Of Big Star-Studded Films In just three days, Saiyaara has earned more than several major releases of the year, including Sky Force (Rs 12.25 crore), Raid 2 (Rs 19.25 crore), Sitaare Zameen Par (Rs 10.7 crore) and Kesari Chapter 2 (Rs 7.75 crore). It has also overtaken the lifetime collections of Maalik (Rs 23.27 crore), Deva (Rs 33.97 crore), Maa (Rs 38.51 crore) and The Diplomat (Rs 40.73 crore). The film surpassed Anurag Basu's star-studded film Metro... In Dino (Rs 48.47 crore) as well. A Romantic Comeback With the re-releases of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (Rs 22.04 crore) and Sanam Teri Kasam (Rs 35.55 crore) drawing good numbers earlier this year, Saiyaara adds to the growing interest in romantic films. It now leads this trend with its strong box office run.

‘Kantara A Legend: Chapter 1' behind-the-scenes video: Rishab Shetty brings his dream project alive

The makers of Kantara A Legend: Chapter 1released a behind-the-scenes video to announce that the filming for the highly-anticipated prequel has been wrapped up. Directed by Rishab Shetty and produced by Hombale Films, the pan-Indian film, originally made in Kannada, will hit the screens worldwide on October 02, 2025. Rishab, who stars as the lead in the movie, says in the video that it was his dream to tell the story of his land to the world. 'Thousands of people supported me in the three-year journey of this movie. After 250-days of shooting for Kantara A Legend: Chapter 1, it's a wrap,' he says in the BTS video. The actor-director thanks his producer, Vijay Kiragandur from Hombale Films, for his support, and his entire team for their efforts. 'Kantara A Legend: Chapter 1 is not a movie, it's a divine force,' says Rishab. The movie is a prequel to Kantara, the sensational 2022 blockbuster. The video begins with Rishab working out in the gym, revealing his toned body for the magnum opus. Rishab is seen practicing several ancient martial art forms, including Kalaripayattu. Rishab is seen closely working with cinematographer Arvind Kashyap and popular Hollywood action choreographer Todor Lazarov. Ajaneesh Loknath is the music composer for the movie while Pragathi Shetty is the costume designer. Rishab has written the film with co-writers Anirudh Mahesh and Shanil Gowtham. Actors from the film, Kalabhavan Niju and Rakesh Poojary died of heart attacks while junior artist MF Kapil drowned in Souparnika river. Apart from these deaths, a boat carrying the crew members of the movie capsized in June. All the members in the boat escaped unheart.
