Teen lost 3 fingers in a ‘freak' firework mishap — but saved his arm thanks to ‘Forrest Gump'

A Kentucky teen lost three of his fingers in a 'freak' firework accident – but saved his arm using a medical trick he learned from 'Forrest Gump.'
Andrew Stratton, 18, told WKYT that he knows he's lucky to be alive after a firework went off prematurely in his left hand while he was hanging with buddies a few days before July Fourth.
It blew off his three middle fingers and part of his thumb — but could have been worse if he didn't tie his belt around his arm to slow the bleeding, a trick he learned from a dramatic scene in the 1994 movie in which Tom Hanks plays Forrest Gump.

'Forrest Gump tourniquet Lieutenant Dan's leg so that's what I thought to do, man, just take my belt off, wrap it around my arm as tight as I could,' said the recent high school graduate from Frankfort.
Stratton, known as Andi, met friends after his construction job and got out of his car to light the firework that was just handed to him, according to a fundraiser set up by a family friend.

But the firework exploded within seconds.
'There was no 'horseplaying' or negligence on Andi's part… simply a freak accident,' the fundraiser stated.
'But the damage had already been done; most of Andi's left hand was gone.'
3 He credited an acclaimed 1994 film for saving his arm.

He also might have lost his eyesight if he weren't wearing his Oakley sunglasses, though some firework debris scratched his corneas from the blast.
Video of the stomach-turning accident was taped and then spread across social media.
'You can hear Andy in the background screaming 'somebody help' and all the while somebody is standing there filming him essentially saving his own life because someone decided it was better to videotape it than to help him,' Stratton's mother Shawna Bowman told WKYT.
3 He spent 12 days in the hospital.

Stratton had a 12-day hospital stay and is still facing the possibility of losing his entire hand.
'Just going to leave it up to God, just going to pray on it,' Stratton told the station.

What we know about death of Oasis fan Lee Claydon as fundraising tops £15k

The 45-year-old died after falling from a height at an Oasis concert at Wembley Stadium on Saturday. An Oasis fan who fell to his death during one of the band's gigs at Wembley Stadium has been named as 'lifelong fan' Lee Claydon. The 45-year-old landscape gardener of Bournemouth, Dorset, died after falling from a balcony during the band's show on Saturday (2 August), prompting a police investigation. A GoFundMe page, which has been set up to help raise money for Mr Claydon's partner and son, has already reached over £15,000. The Metropolitan Police said: 'A man – aged in his 40s – was found with injuries consistent with a fall. He was sadly pronounced dead at the scene. 'The stadium was busy and we believe it is likely a number of people witnessed the incident, or may knowingly or unknowingly have caught it on mobile phone video footage. 'If you have any information that could help us to confirm what happened, please call 101.' What happened to Lee Claydon? Mr Claydon fell from a balcony at Wembley Stadium during a run of stadium shows for Oasis' sell-out Live '25 reunion tour – their first since splitting in 2009. Details about exactly what happened have so far not been officially released but Mr Clive Claydon said that his son, who is a father of one and was set to go on holiday with his family soon to Turkey, had gone to the concert with his brother and his brother's children, might have had a 'couple of beers' but had not taken any drugs. He said: 'He doesn't take drugs, he may have had a couple of beers but who hadn't there, people have said horrible things but it was just an accident.' A witness told the Daily Mail that it was a 'big fall' but did not know how it happened. They said: 'It was horrendous. The guy fell from a balcony. Paramedics came rushing over. There was a lot of screaming and shouting. 'It was a big fall. God knows how it happened. It was so tragic. I don't know how on Earth it happened." Safety concerns Clive Claydon said that he was concerned about the safety measures at Wembley but added his son's brother and family had not seen the accident happen. He said: 'All I know is there was beer everywhere, it's slippery, he slipped apparently, we do not know the rest of it, there's questions about the barriers.' Meanwhile, a woman who witnessed a man falling from an upper level at Wembley Stadium four years ago has questioned whether lessons were learned from the incident. Stephanie Good, 39, said she watched a man fall from the stands during a Euros football match between England and Croatia in 2021. The man, named as Jon, reportedly survived but suffered two broken ankles and femur and a fractured pelvis just before kick-off. Good said: 'No-one really knows what came out of their investigation into the guy who fell at the football and whether there's anything more they could have done. It felt like it wasn't being taken all that seriously.' Good claimed that 'nobody seemed to know what to do' and that stewards 'didn't seem well-trained in terms of how to respond to a really big emergency'. A spokesperson for Wembley Stadium said: 'Wembley Stadium operates to a very high health and safety standard, fully meeting legal requirements for the safety of spectators and staff, and is certified to and compliant with the ISO 45001 standard. 'We work very closely and collaboratively with all relevant event delivery stakeholders – including event owners, local authorities, the Sports Grounds Safety Authority and the police – to deliver events to high standards of safety, security and service for everyone attending or working in the venue.' 'A loving family man' Paying tribute to his son Clive Claydon said: 'He was a lovely bloke, loved to be with his family – a hard-working family man, he loved his kid, looked after them really well.' He added: 'He had everything going for him. I am so devastated, I have been to the doctor for tablets and everything to get over it.' A fundraising page, set up by Mr Claydon's brother, Aaron Claydon, has raised over £15,000 for his partner and son as of Wednesday morning (6 August). Describing his brother as 'the man I have always looked up to', Aaron Claydon wrote: 'Lee was a loving family man who was a role model to his son Harry and was loved so much by all his family. Lee would have done anything for any of us and he was taken from us far too soon and we will miss him so very much.' The GoFundMe page says Mr Claydon 'loved music and guitar' and the fundraiser was set up for his loved ones, who 'are going through any family's worst nightmare'. What have Oasis said? Oasis have spoken of their 'shock' of Mr Claydon's death during one of their sell-out concerts. The band said in a statement: 'We are shocked and saddened to hear of the tragic death of a fan at the show. 'Oasis would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family and friends of the person involved.' Oasis played five shows at Wembley in north London as part of their reunion tour. Their gig the night after the incident at the same venue did go ahead, with the band dedicating their song Live Forever to 'all the people who can't be here tonight'. Singer Liam Gallagher said on stage: 'This one's for all the people who can't be here tonight, but who are here if you know what I mean, and aren't they looking lovely. Live Forever.

Oasis fan who plunged to his death during London concert may have slipped on beer-soaked floor before tragic fall: ‘An accident waiting to happen'

The Oasis fan who plunged to his death during the British rock band's London concert Saturday night may have slipped on the beer-soaked floor before his tragic fall, according to his devastated family. Lee Claydon, 45, was pronounced dead after he allegedly lost his footing on the alcohol-slicked ground and tumbled from the upper-tier balcony during the legendary Britpop musicians' concert at Wembley Stadium. 'People have said horrible things but it was just an accident,' his grief-stricken father, Clive, 75, told the BBC, questioning the safety measures at the famed stadium, while noting his son, whom he referred to as 'a lovely bloke,' may have had a 'couple beers' at the concert. 3 Lee Claydon, a 45-year-old dad, fell to his death during an Oasis concert at Wembley Stadium, his devastated family confirmed. gofundme 'All I know is there was beer everywhere. It's slippery, he slipped apparently, we do not know the rest of it. There's questions about the barriers.' Oasis fans shattered the venue's all-time booze sales record each night of the band's performances. Roughly 4,500 kegs have been shipped in for gigs at Wembley since Oasis kicked off their first tour in 16 years early last month, drawing an estimated 80,000 fans per show, the Standard reported. Parts of the stadium have also been converted into storage to meet gig-goers' boozy demands, with fans setting a new Wembley record of roughly 250,000 pints sold each night, the outlet reported. 'I've been told that it was an accident waiting to happen,' Clive told the US Sun, adding that his son attended the concert with his brother, niece and nephew, who didn't witness the horrific fall. 3 Liam Gallagher of Oasis performing live at Wembley Stadium. James Watkins / BACKGRID 'I can't understand how it happened. I've never been to Wembley, but you would expect the health and safety to be good but I've been told that apparently it was dangerous there. I want answers from Wembley about how it could have happened.' A Wembley spokesperson told the outlet that the stadium operates to a 'very high health and safety standard,' has met all legal requirements for the arena and staff and is regularly inspected. Police who responded to the grim scene confirmed Claydon's injuries were 'consistent with a fall.' 3 Oasis performing at Wembley Stadium, where Claydon is believed to have slipped and fallen from the balcony. William Lailey / SWNS Anyone who saw the death or caught it on video is now being urged to contact authorities as they continue to investigate. Claydon, a landscape gardener from Bournemouth, is remembered as a devoted family man and father, who loved fishing, music, his guitar and Oasis. 'Our family has been turned upside down and are struggling to deal with this devastation and unexpected loss,' his brother, Aaron, said in a GoFundMe launched after the sudden accident. 'Lee was a loving family man who was a role model to his son Harry and was loved so much by all his family. Lee would have done anything for any of us and he was taken from us far too soon and we will miss him so very much.' Oasis said they were 'shocked and saddened' by the tragedy, offering 'sincere condolences to the family and friends of the person involved,' in a statement Sunday.
