KwaZulu-Natal braces for damaging winds and isolated showers

As damaging coastal winds and isolated showers move in, KwaZulu-Natal will face a turbulent night and day ahead. According to forecaster Odirile Modipa, the province will remain cloudy, with rainfall persisting along the coastline and some inland areas.
'We're expecting isolated showers over KwaZulu-Natal, particularly along the coastal regions,' said Modipa.
'There's also a warning for damaging winds along the province's coastline, which may impact marine activities and beachgoers.'
Residents in areas like Durban and Richards Bay should prepare for gusty conditions overnight and into the early hours, while those in the interior may see brief rain before the skies clear. Weather warnings remain in effect in Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal coasts
The South African Weather Service has warned of strong winds and waves affecting the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal coasts. These conditions are expected to persist into tomorrow, creating dangerous conditions along the shoreline.
'Winds and waves along the coastal regions of KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape will remain strong,' Modipa warned.
'These damaging winds are not just a marine concern; they may also disrupt power lines and light infrastructure.'
Despite the strong winds, inland temperatures will remain fairly stable. Durban is forecast to reach a maximum of 22°C, while surrounding coastal towns like East London and Port Edward will remain cooler, hovering around 16°C.
While KwaZulu-Natal deals with these warnings, skies are expected to gradually clear as the day progresses. However, wind chill and cloudy conditions will keep the province feeling cold.
'Some areas may begin to see sunnier skies by tomorrow afternoon, but overall, it's going to be a cold day with gusty winds across the coastal regions,' said Modipa.

Severe weather: Gauteng to face thunderstorms, hail, and flooding

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Yellow Level 3 warning for severe thunderstorms in Gauteng for Thursday, 7 August. As a cut-off low sweeps across the province, residents are warned of potential travel disruptions, localised flooding, and damaging winds. Cold conditions are expected to settle over Gauteng starting Wednesday, with the chilliest day anticipated to be Thursday. SAWS senior forecaster Tokelo Chiloane confirmed the forecast, saying, 'From tomorrow, we are having a cut-off low. Although it is located over the central parts of the country, it is expected to hit the central and eastern parts of the country.' According to Chiloane, Johannesburg is expected to reach a maximum temperature of only 13°C on Thursday, while Pretoria will peak at 14°C. Furthermore, the cold snap will accompany afternoon thundershowers, strong winds, and large amounts of small hail in some areas. Although the severe conditions will only last for a short period, SAWS has cautioned that the storms could cause significant impacts, particularly on roads and infrastructure. The intense thunderstorm activity is predicted to bring damaging winds and localised flooding, particularly in low-lying areas and informal settlements. Commuters and motorists have been urged to exercise extreme caution. Additionally, the weather pattern is driven by a cut-off low-pressure system, which will shift eastwards after Thursday. 'It will move to the eastern parts of the country,' said Chiloane. Let us know by leaving a comment below, or send a WhatsApp to 060 011 021 1. SAWS warns of sub-zero temperatures

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning ahead of a cut-off low pressure system expected to bring cloudy, cold, and wet conditions across large parts of the country between Wednesday and Thursday. According to SAWS, the weather system will impact the central and eastern provinces, including Gauteng, Free State, Mpumalanga, North West, and KwaZulu-Natal, with isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers predicted. In addition to the rainfall, snowfall is expected over the escarpments of the Eastern Cape and Lesotho, raising the potential for hazardous driving conditions in affected areas. 'Snowfall is also expected over the escarpments of the Eastern Cape and Lesotho,' the weather service confirmed in a statement. Daytime temperatures could reach zero – or lower – in parts of Mzansi. SAWS noted that it will continue to monitor the system closely and provide updates as necessary. The public is advised to take necessary precautions, especially when travelling, as changing weather conditions may affect road safety and visibility.
