By: Sherell Jeffrey Text Size: Earlier at the convention, Hajiji pointed out Sabah's notable economic recovery since GRS took power in September 2020, when the State faced 'the worst economic situation in its history'. CHIEF Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor said his ruling Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) coalition will decide at its Supreme Council meeting whether to go solo in the coming state election. When pressed after officiating the inaugural Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) and Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Star) convention at the Hongkod Koisaan Kadazan Dusun Cultural Association, Saturday, on when this decision would be made, he said: 'Wait lah.' Supporters from both PBS and Star chanted 'solo, solo, solo' as Hajiji was giving his speech at the convention. He said the calls were a very good sign for unity within GRS and that the local spirit is very high. On whether he would serve out his full term with just four months left before the state election must be held, he said: 'Do not ask me that. We will think about it. 'We in GRS, any decision must be made through the coalition's Supreme Council. 'When I want to dissolve, I will inform all my colleagues, the party presidents when to dissolve. It is done on consensus, even though it is the Chief Minister's prerogative to advise the Head of State, but we cannot sideline our friends in the coalition,' he said. Earlier at the convention, Hajiji pointed out Sabah's notable economic recovery since GRS took power in September 2020, when the State faced 'the worst economic situation in its history'. 'With careful planning and implementation of the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ 1.0) policy direction, we not only succeeded in restoring it but also boosted the State's economic performance to a very impressive level,' he said. He pointed out Sabah's Gross Domestic Product, which grew to RM84.3 billion in 2024 from RM83.2 billion in 2023. Additionally, the State revenue collection for 2022, 2023 and 2024 nearly reached RM7 billion, compared to just RM3.59 billion in 2020. On top of that, the Sabah Government's reserves now stand at RM8.6 billion, while domestic and foreign investments brought into Sabah since 2021 total RM35.38 billion. 'All of this is a healthy economic indicator and proof of the capability and excellence of the State Government led by GRS. No one can deny it. Only the opposition chooses to close their eyes and deny these facts,' Hajiji said. He said Sabah can turn into a more advanced, prosperous, peaceful and harmonious State if GRS continues receiving the people's mandate. 'We will ensure all development plans that have been outlined can be fully implemented from the city to the interior. 'The Sabah Maju Jaya policy is not just a document but a long-term strategic plan covering human resource development, natural resource management and administrative efficiency.' He acknowledged that despite economic success, the GRS continues to face ongoing challenges from opposition parties envious of the coalition's achievements. 'They will not stop. They are jealous of our success. They want to see us fail, be weak and fall,' he said, describing opposition tactics as including false propaganda, deception and slander. 'Our house, we protect. GRS is our house, our place of shelter and the organising of our struggle. If we do not take care of it, who else can we count on?' he said. At the PBS-Star convention, Hajiji said it is a historic moment in strengthening local political consensus, with the close cooperation between the two local parties showing political maturity that puts Sabah's interests above ideological differences. 'This convention not only shows the spirit of unity among local parties with their history and principles but also proves that GRS is capable of going further as a political coalition that truly represents the aspirations of the people of Sabah,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Unified political approach needed in Sabah, says Joniston Bangkuai

KOTA KINABALU: Politicians working together can bring better development and political stability to a government than acting alone, says Datuk Joniston Bangkuai. The Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) information chief stated that parties opting to run solo in the upcoming state elections are not acting in the people's best interests. Speaking to villagers at a meet-the-people session in Kiulu on Saturday (July 19), he said the unified approach under Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) has proven effective in governing the state inclusively and stably, with a focus on long-term development. "The GRS government is moving in the same direction as the GPS government in Sarawak, which is formed by local parties representing all races. This approach is the best for Sabah," said Bangkuai. "If we look at Sarawak, Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu Sarawak (PBB) holds a clear majority but still chooses to work with other parties to develop the socio-economy of Sarawak jointly. Not alone," he said. On Parti Warisan and Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Malaysia's (KDM) plan to stand alone, he called it a political tactic that goes against the aspirations of Sabahans. "We do not deny any party's right to stand on its own, but at the end of the day, the people will judge based on results," Bangkuai said, adding that stability can only be achieved when local parties work together, not compete against each other. "If we want to bring about a mature political approach, it must be followed by a willingness to work together and compromise, not move alone and deny collective strength," he added. He also reminded the public how Warisan and KDM had been willing to collude with Umno in an attempt to topple the state government led by Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, which he said prioritised personal political interests over the state's stability. "Such actions do not reflect leadership that puts people first but rather undermine public confidence and distract from the focus on the development agenda," Bangkuai said. He reiterated that under Hajiji's leadership, the GRS government has shown that a coalition of local parties can function well and has achieved many successes, such as increasing state reserves and rolling out welfare initiatives.

Parties going solo undermine Sabah's political stability and unity - Joniston

Joniston officiates the symbolic launch of Papawantai Taasok, a community thanksgiving event. KIULU (July 19): Local political parties that choose to go it alone in the upcoming state election are not aligning with the people's need for political stability and strong local cooperation, said Kiulu assemblyman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai. He said the unified approach under Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) has proven effective in governing the state in an inclusive, stable and focused manner on long-term development. 'The GRS government is moving in the same direction as the GPS government in Sarawak, which is formed by local parties representing all races. This approach is the best for Sabah. 'If we look at Sarawak, Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu Sarawak (PBB) holds a clear majority but still chooses to work with other parties to develop the socio-economy of Sarawak jointly. Not alone,' he said. Joniston, who is the GRS and PBS information chief, made the remarks during a meet-the-people session and Papawantai Taasok ceremony here on Saturday. Reacting to Warisan and PKDM's plan to stand alone, Joniston called it a political tactic that goes against the aspirations of the Sabah people. 'We do not deny any party's right to stand on its own, but at the end of the day, the people will judge based on results. 'Stability can only be achieved when local parties choose to work together, not compete among themselves. 'If we want to bring about a mature (politics) approach, it must be followed by a willingness to work together and compromise … not move alone and deny collective strength,' he added. Joniston also reminded the public how Warisan and PKDM had been willing to collude with Umno in an attempt to topple the government led by Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, which he said clearly reflected a prioritisation of personal political interests over the state's stability. 'Such actions do not reflect leadership that puts people first, but rather only undermine public confidence and distract from the focus on the development agenda,' he said. He reiterated that under Hajiji's leadership, the GRS government has shown that a coalition of local parties can function well and has even achieved many achievements, such as increasing state reserves and rolling out welfare initiatives. In Kiulu, Joniston said rural development continues to be driven under the Sabah Maju Jaya (SMJ) roadmap, including agricultural road upgrades to improve access to farms and villages. 'We acknowledge that more still needs to be done, and we do not deny the existence of challenges such as water, electricity and infrastructure, but we take full responsibility and are committed to moving forward,' he said. He called on the people to continue supporting leadership that has delivered tangible results and not be swayed by political decisions made in the interests of certain parties that could harm state stability.

Ulu Padas Hydroelectric project proceeding smoothly

Nizam KOTA KINABALU (July 19: The 187.5-megawatt (MW) Ulu Padas Hydroelectric project (UPHEP) in Tenom is proceeding smoothly and barring any unforseen circumstances, it will be completed as scheduled. The detailed design for the UPHEP is nearing completion and several issues, especially relating to concerns initially raised by some 40 families living near the area had already been resolved. Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Nizam Abu Bakar Titingan says he has been informed by a reliable source that officials from the company handling the project had on a number of occasions met with these families to allay their fears about the construction of the dam. These villagers who live nearby are satisfied and there had been no further objections. 'I have been assured there is no cause for worry . . . and everything is progressing smoothly,'says Nizam. Work on the 125-metre high roller compact concrete dam with a reservoir capacity of 25 million litres of water, is expected to begin later this year. The dam is located 9.3km away from the powerhouse where three 60MW Francis Type turbines will generate 187MW of electricity daily. And early this year, entrepreneur Tan Sri TC Goh had praised the state government for coming up with long-term solutions to the existing water and electricity issues. Goh who is a member of the Sabah Economic Advisory Council (SEAC), especially cited the UPHEP in Tenom as the answer to the long- standing problem the current GRS-PH Plus government inherited after coming to power in 2020. In fact, a number of initiatives, he says, had already been implemented earlier to address supply disruptions before the UPHEP commences production. The UPHEP is scheduled for completion in December 2030. Goh who also heads the Federation of Chinese Associations Malaysia (Huazong) and the Federal of Chinese Associations Sabah (FCAS), says he is confident the UPHEP will proceed smoothly given the reputation and experience of the companies handling it. Meanwhile, Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat) Tandek chief Datuk Dr Janathan Kandok was quoted as saying the UPHEP spoke volumes of the genuine commitment to ensure long-term water and electricity availability. 'This project is not something the state government promises in view of the upcoming state election. And it is not something you heard from the grapevine. 'It was already launched two years ago, reflecting the farsightedness of the government in tackling issues faced by the people,' Dr Janathan said. Gamuda Berhad is the total development contractor (TDC) for this power project in partnership with Conlay Construction Sdn Bhd (Conlay). The UPHEP when completed, is expected to generate an average of 1,052GWh of clean energy yearly – hence, increasing Sabah's current dependable capacity by some 15 per cent. It will also double the renewable energy (RE) mix, supporting Sabah's goal of achieving approximately 35% RE share in its generation mix by 2035. The scope of work will include design, construction, testing and commissioning of the hydroelectric plant involving a roller-compacted concrete dam, a main and secondary powerhouse, water conveyance system, project access, and other permanent facilities such as a 275kV switchyard, 33kV sub-transmission line, workshop, among others. At the launch of the project in 2023, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji Haji Noor had expressed confidence that it would also resolve Sabah's water supply issue in the longer term. The dam is able to release up to 6,000 million litres of water daily. Kota Kinabalu residents only need to use about 500 to 600 million litres of water per day.
