Rory at the ready for Friday

Watch out if Rory McIlroy can carry on where he left off in the opening round of the Genesis Scottish golf Open at the Renaissance Club, East :Lothian.
The man who, in April, became only the sixth player in history to complete a grand slam of all four major titles when he won the Masters looked to be heading for an average opening score when he sparked into life birdieing the last three holes to finish two under par.
That put the Northern Irishman alongside defending champion Bob McIntyre of Scotland but in a chasing pack.
'There was a little bit of rust in there after taking a couple of weeks of but I found my rhythm and started hitting better shots on the way in' said McIlroy.
Leading the way are four players on six under par (64) but there is plenty of Scottish presence on the leader board with Calum Hill st -5, Grant Forest at -3 and Ewen Ferguson alongside McIntyre at -2 as is Conor Syme.
Another Scot, Richie Ramsay, will start the day at even par (70).

Open leader Scottie Scheffler starts with birdie to dampen hopes of chasing pack

The American, who did not drop a shot on Saturday in establishing a four-stroke lead, would have heard the chants of 'Rory, Rory, Rory' as his rival strode off the first tee in the group ahead. But he was, unsurprisingly, unfazed and despite finding the rough off the tee he struck a brilliant approach to inside a foot and immediately was seven ahead of the Northern Irishman. Playing partner Haotong Lee also birdied so his overall lead remained four. A statement start from Scottie. — The Open (@TheOpen) July 20, 2025 McIlroy birdied the second to reduce the gap to the leader back to six but there were no signs of the early fireworks of the previous day when he was three under through four on his way to a 66. The Masters champion knew he would have to realistically better that if he were to stand a chance of winning his second Claret Jug but struggled for momentum and bundling a chip out of the rough way past the pin resulted in a dropped shot at the fourth he could ill afford. Also back at eight under was playing partner Matt Fitzpatrick, who began the day one shot better off only to bogey the par-three third. Bryson DeChambeau was also on that number through 16 holes after a six-birdie charge, while former Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama carded seven birdies and one bogey in the group behind.

Shane Lowry offers hope to chasing pack at Open with final-round 66

Shane Lowry offered hope to Rory McIlroy and the rest of the chasing pack praying for an uncharacteristic Scottie Scheffler slip by shooting a final-round 66 at The Open. The best conditions of the week, sustained sunshine and very little wind, left Royal Portrush vulnerable to some low scoring and the 2019 champion here made the most of it with a 66. Advertisement In reality Scheffler's rivals are going to have to shoot lower than that if they are to challenge the world number one, who did not have a bogey on Saturday in extending his lead to four strokes. Matt Fitzpatrick, five back, and McIlroy and Tyrrell Hatton, six behind, represent the biggest threat, albeit a small one. Lowry recovered from a bogey at the par-five second to dial in his seven-iron with a birdie at the short next and a hole-out from the fairway at the fourth. Four more birdies followed and he almost finished in style but his attempted chip-in did not drop. Advertisement 'The course is gettable today – but then that gives Scottie the chance to shoot three or four under and if he shoots three of four under he won't be caught I don't think,' said the Irishman. England's Justin Rose was two under through three holes despite missing a seven-footer for birdie at the first but his move up to seven under still left him seven off the top.
