CM will hold meeting on MIDC issues in Pimpri Chinchwad, says minister Misal
Responding to concerns raised by BJP MLA Mahesh Landge in the ongoing assembly session, Misal admitted to problems in MIDC zones and said a joint meeting would be held soon at the chief minister's office in Mumbai. She said officials concerned from different government departments and representatives from industrial associations would be invited for this meeting.
Landge highlighted that there were a total of 3,470 industrial units in Pimpri Chinchwad.
They faced persistent infrastructure issues such as poor roads, drainage problems and unreliable power supply despite paying around Rs320 crore annually in taxes to the municipal corporation, he said.

He said, "There is no sewage line in MIDC areas and the condition of several roads is very poor. The road connecting Indrayani Chowk and Bhosari MIDC police station is filled with potholes."
Belsare said the industrialists had been demanding a dedicated effluent treatment plant (ETP), but there had been no progress on this matter despite meetings with officials of PCMC, MIDC and the industries minister.
The industrial units of Pimpri Chinchwad had been demanding the authorities set up a plant to process hazardous waste because they had to transport it to Ranjangaon MIDC, almost 60km away.
Landge said industrialists in Chakan MIDC faced similar issues. They had even threatened to launch a protest against the poor condition of roads and heavy traffic congestion.
Misal admitted to similar infrastructure issues in Nashik MIDC areas.
She said out of a 68km road network in Satpur and Ambad MIDC areas of Nashik, the administration had constructed 15km of new roads. The minister said the work on the remaining ones had been planned. She said the municipal corporation of Nashik had been directed to start work on the new drainage line to prevent flooding in the area.
Responding to Congress MLA Amit Deshmukh's demand for a standard operating procedure (SOP) to address multi-agency issues in MIDC areas across Maharashtra, Misal assured the House that appropriate action would be taken on the matter.

'Speak in Marathi or get out': Fight over seat in Mumbai local train turns into language row — Watch Viral video
Once again, an incident of language row has come to light in Maharashtra's capital, Mumbai, where an argument over a seat on a local train turned into a full-blown language war, with one woman telling the other to learn Marathi or 'get out'. The incident happened on Friday evening in the crowded ladies' compartment on the Central Line. The incident was also captured on camera and shared on social media platforms. The video that went viral on social media, showed six to seven women arguing over a seat. During the debate, one woman criticised another female passenger for not speaking in Marathi language. "If you want to stay in our Mumbai, speak Marathi, otherwise get out," she said. Soon after, other local women in the train joined the fight. This incident came amid ongoing language row in Maharashtra, with Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena party workers being condemned for targeting and abusing people for not speaking in Marathi. Earlier this month, a shopkeeper in Mumbai's Vikhroli area was assaulted by MNS workers over a WhatsApp status deemed offensive to Marathi people. The video of the incident showed the shopkeeper being forced to apologise publicly while being assaulted. Recently, Shiv Sena (UBT) chief Uddhav Thackeray asserted that he would not accept any attempt by the Maharashtra government to implement a three-language policy in the state. Meanwhile, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena chief Raj Thackeray on Friday said if Hindi was made mandatory for Classes 1 to 5 in schools in Maharashtra, his party will "shut down schools". Speaking at a rally at Mira Bhayandar near Mumbai, he referred to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis's latest averment that Hindi will be taught in state schools at any costs. Thackerayalso hit back at BJP MP Nishikant Dubey's controversial "patak-patak ke maarenge" remarks. In a counter-attack, Raj Thackeray said, 'A BJP MP said, 'Marathi logon ko hum yahan pe patak patak ke maarenge'... You come to Mumbai. Mumbai ke samundar mein dubo dubo ke maarenge.'

One Big Beautiful Bill: A bold reset or another layer of complexity?
New student loan rules and funding changes begin under Trump's OBBB. (AI Image) The US Department of Education has announced the immediate implementation of higher education provisions within the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBB). The move follows the signing of the legislation into law by President Trump, delivering wide-ranging changes aimed at federal student aid programs and student loan repayment systems. On July 18, 2025, the Department released a Dear Colleague Letter (DCL) to provide initial guidance to higher education institutions and Federal Student Aid (FSA) partners. The DCL outlines near-term regulatory changes and marks the first phase of the OBBB implementation process. Major changes to student loan repayment The OBBB introduces major updates to income-based repayment (IBR) plans, offering a more streamlined approach for borrowers. The reforms target simplification of loan repayment systems, including new repayment options for parent borrowers and revised loan limits for part-time students. The bill addresses regulations from the previous administration, including those related to borrower defence to repayment and closed school discharge policies. These changes affect how borrowers can seek relief from student loan obligations in cases of institutional misconduct or closure. Pell Grant funding and vocational training expansion One of the core provisions of the OBBB is the allocation of funds to cover a $10.5 billion shortfall in the Pell Grant programme. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Top 3 Casino Games in Sheffield Lounge 777 Play Game Undo This funding aims to stabilise the program, ensuring continued support for low-income students. Additionally, the bill establishes a new Workforce Pell Grant programme, intended to expand access to short-term, career-focused training. These programmes are designed to prepare students for high-demand job sectors and are expected to launch next year as part of a phased implementation. Eliminating aid to underperforming institutions The OBBB includes new accountability measures for higher education institutions. Under the new law, colleges that offer programmes leaving students worse off financially than before enrolment will lose access to federal student loan funding. This provision is intended to ensure that only institutions providing clear economic value to students will remain eligible for federal aid. The Department of Education has stated that additional guidance and regulatory updates will be issued as these measures are developed further. Next steps in implementation While several provisions take immediate effect, others—including the full rollout of the new Repayment Assistance Plan and the Workforce Pell Grant programme—will become effective in the following year. The Department of Education has indicated that further updates will be provided in future guidance documents and through formal regulatory processes. Acting Under Secretary James Bergeron described the announcement as the first step in advancing the President's vision for postsecondary education and workforce development. The Department will continue working with stakeholders as the broader implementation of the OBBB unfolds over the coming years. TOI Education is on WhatsApp now. Follow us here . J&K man abducted in Niger terror attack; family appeals to Modi govt for help; Indian embassy works for safe release
NEW DELHI: The family of Ranjit Singh, a senior safety officer from Jammu and Kashmir abducted during a terror attack in Niger's Dosso region, has appealed to the Indian government for urgent intervention to secure his safe return. Singh, a resident of Chakka Kundi village in Ramban district, was working for Transrail, a transmission line company, when he was taken hostage by unidentified armed attackers on July 15. In a tearful interview to ANI, Singh's wife, Sheila Devi, shared her anguish. 'My husband's name is Ranjit Singh. He works in Niger as a senior safety officer in a transmission lightning company called Transrail. On July 15, I tried to contact him, but since then there has been no communication,' she said. She recounted how, after failing to reach him, she contacted his company, only to learn of a terrorist attack at the worksite. Workers had fled into nearby forests to escape the attackers, and Singh was among those who ran. The next day, on July 16, she received confirmation from her husband's colleagues that Singh had been abducted by the attackers. 'I have no idea in what condition my husband is. My entire life is at stake. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 21st Century Skills Start with Confident Communication Planet Spark Learn More Undo I appeal to the Indian government and higher authorities to please bring my husband home safely,' Sheila Devi said, breaking down in tears. She also mentioned she has three young children and an ailing family to care for. Singh's father, Mohan Lal Sen, also urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene. 'We want to tell Modiji to act. The Government of India should work to bring him back. We have been suffering for the last 5-6 days. He has small children. We are very worried, where is he? Has he eaten anything or not?' he said. Singh's mother, Sadhu Devi, is distraught. Family members said she has not eaten or slept since hearing of her son's abduction. The Indian Embassy in Niger confirmed that two other Indians lost their lives in the attack, which took place near an electrical line construction site protected by Nigerien forces. The embassy said it is working with local authorities to repatriate the bodies of the two deceased Indians and to ensure Singh's safe release. The terror attack occurred about 100 km from Niger's capital Niamey. Arab News reported that unidentified armed attackers ambushed a Nigerien army unit providing security at the site. Niger has been in political turmoil since a July 2023 military coup ousted President Mohamed Bazoum. The country faces security threats from jihadist groups linked to Al-Qaeda and Islamic State, with border regions and sparsely populated areas exploited for terror activities, as noted in the US State Department's 2023 report. The Indian Embassy has issued a security advisory urging all Indian nationals in Niger to remain vigilant, while Singh's family waits desperately for updates.
