Leopards chase promotion as VFC fight relegation

The Citizen24-04-2025

LIMPOPO – With only five matches remaining in the current Motsepe Foundation Championship League season, teams are entering the final stretch with everything to play for – from promotion to the Betway Premiership Division to avoiding the dreaded drop.
Black Leopards are still very much in the race for promotion and remain optimistic about securing a spot in the promotional playoffs. Head coach Joel Masutha believes his team still has a strong chance to reach their goal, with 15 points still up for grabs. 'We are still on course. Anything is possible at this stage.'
The Thohoyandou-based side currently sits in fifth position on the log with 38 points, just six behind log leaders Durban City.
What gives Leopards hope is the fact that three of their five remaining matches will be played at home, where they've enjoyed strong support from their fans. Their upcoming fixtures include Highbury (April 23 at Thohoyandou Stadium), Milford FC, Castric, Durban City, and the University of Pretoria.
Masutha reiterated that while their target remains winning the league and earning automatic promotion, they would be satisfied with a place in the promotional play-offs if direct qualification isn't possible.
Meanwhile, fellow Vhembe-based club Venda Football Club (VFC) find themselves at the opposite end of the table, fighting to avoid relegation. The team face Kruger United in Mpumalanga next – a crucial encounter that could determine their fate.
Assistant coach Luvhengo Mungomeni remains positive despite the pressure. 'We are confident in the current form of the team. We are determined to win all our home matches and aim to pick up at least a point in away games,' he said.
To survive the relegation battle, VFC need to win at least three of their remaining five matches. Their upcoming opponents include Highbury, Upington City, Leruma United, and Hungry Lions.

SA is not on newly announced 2026 F1 calendar

Formula One will have two races in Spain next season with Madrid making its debut in September and Italy's Imola dropping off the 24-round calendar, the governing FIA announced on Tuesday. South Africa is not on the schedule after moves to host a Grand Prix in Africa intensified in recent years. Formula One still hopes to return to Africa and is talking to three possible venues but any race deal looks a long way off, F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali said in May. The continent is the major omission on a record 24-race calendar and last hosted a grand prix at South Africa's Kyalami circuit in 1993. Melbourne's Australian Grand Prix will again be the season-opener on March 8 with China's Shanghai circuit hosting round two a week later as the sport enters a new engine era with Cadillac arriving as an 11th team. Monaco will be the first European round on June 7 with Barcelona's Circuit de Catalunya scheduled the next week. Madrid's new street circuit will debut as the last race in Europe on September 13, the weekend after the Italian Grand Prix at Monza. Imola was out of contract after this year's race and drops off the list. The season will end in Abu Dhabi on December 6. "We are excited to welcome Madrid to the calendar, and to see huge automotive brands such as Audi, Cadillac and Ford join the Formula One grid," said Formula One CEO Stefano Domenicali. Swiss-based Sauber will become the Audi works team in 2026 while Ford are partnering with Red Bull. Calendar: March 8 - Australia, Melbourne March 15 - China, Shanghai March 29 - Japan, Suzuka April 12 - Bahrain, Sakhir April 19 - Saudi Arabia, Jeddah May 3 - US, Miami May 24 - Canada, Montreal June 7 - Monaco June 14 - Spain, Barcelona June 28 - Austria, Spielberg July 5 - Britain, Silverstone July 19 - Belgium, Spa-Francorchamps July 26 - Hungary, Budapest August 23 - Netherlands, Zandvoort September 6 - Italy, Monza September 13 - Spain, Madrid September 27 - Azerbaijan, Baku October 11 - Singapore October 25 - US, Austin November 1 - Mexico, Mexico City November 8 - Brazil, Sao Paulo November 21 - US, Las Vegas November 29 - Qatar December 6 - Abu Dhabi

Thabo Nthethe confident Casric Stars have learned from their playoffs pain

Thabo Nthethe, former Mamelodi Sundowns defender and current assistant coach of Casric Stars, insists the clubs is ready for the PSL promotion/relegation play-offs. Photo: BackpagePix Image: BackpagePix Casric Stars will be hoping it's second time lucky when they launch their quest for a place in the Betway Premiership as they prepare to face Orbit College in the opening fixture of the PSL promotion/relegation play-offs on Wednesday (3pm kick-off). Stars, along with Orbit College and Cape Town City, will battle it out in a tightly contested mini-tournament, with only one spot in the top flight up for grabs at the end of the round-robin series. This marks their second appearance in the play-offs since purchasing the National First Division status of Free State Stars in the 2022/23 season. Following a disappointing showing in their previous attempt, the Mpumalanga-based club will be aiming for a much better outcome this time around. Video Player is loading. Next Stay Close ✕ Assistant coach and former Mamelodi Sundowns defender, Thabo Nthethe, believes this year presents a great opportunity for the team to prove their worth. 'The boys are excited to be a part of the playoffs this season,' Nthethe told Independent Media. 'We are where we are because we want promotion. This is our opportunity to showcase ourselves, and if we win the mini tournament, we'll go through. It's another chance.' Despite a solid campaign, Nthethe feels they could have finished even higher on the log. Casric was also among the clubs directly affected by the recent player registration saga involving Durban City, which delayed the start of the play-offs and created uncertainty over final standings. 'The boys did well this season, but we should've ended the campaign further up the table,' he continued. 'We've been doing our best to keep the players motivated because the league took time to finalize things due to the case. We tried to keep the players active and fresh by giving them off days to recover ahead of the tournament, but now we're ready.'
