I Want What They Have, Pride Edition: Anna Camp and Jade Whipkey

Vogue23-06-2025
Love is a many-splendored thing, especially when you're gawking at it from the outside. In this column, we'll be examining the celebrity couples that give us hope for our own romantic futures and trying to learn what we can from their well-documented bonds.
As far as I'm concerned, it's always good news whenever somebody famous joins the LGBTQ+ community (except for TERFs! We don't want you at our party! Go flood J.K. Rowling's mentions hoping she'll notice you!), so as you can imagine, I'm practically doing calisthenics over Pitch Perfect star Anna Camp and stylist Jade Whipkey, who confirmed their relationship back in May. Camp has previously been married to men—actors Michael Mosley and Skylar Astin, to be specific—and I don't know precisely how she now identifies (as a lesbian? Bisexual? All-around queer?), but I'm extremely excited to have her batting for the rainbow team, so to speak.
Unfortunately, social media seems to disagree, given Camp and Whipkey have faced some backlash over their 18-year age gap. For her part, 42-year-old Camp has responded with absolute grace and aplomb, writing in a comment on Instagram: 'I've dated men exactly my age and Jade is far more mature than any of them. We have more in common than anyone else I've ever dated and can literally talk about anything and everything. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and I'm wishing everyone well, especially this pride month.'
Yes, Anna! Get those immature men's asses! Has anyone instinctively criticizing this relationship ever heard of, oh, I don't know, Sarah Paulson and Holland Taylor?
To be clear, I'm not always a fan of the May/December dynamic, even when the May and December are both queer; that said, I think the trick to figuring out whether an age-gap relationship can work is a) actually being in it (stand down, armchair quarterbacks!) and b) gauging how emotionally mature and/or ready for a relationship the younger person in the equation is. If Whipkey were newly 18 and dating a woman double her age, sure, I might have doubts, but she's 24!
As a proud lesbian alumna (class of '22) and current bisexual who dated a fair number of older men—and even older women—in my single era, yes, certain challenges can arise from that arrangement. But then again, it's kind of fun to explain TikTok home reno videos to your older paramour over drinks; and they, in turn, can come in handy when it's time to figure out what a 401K is and what, exactly, should be in yours.

Wednesday EPs Defend ‘Impactful' Death in Episode 4: ‘Not Everyone Is Going to Make It Out Alive'

Wednesday Wednesday fans were stunned, elated even, when the second season's third episode ended with the shocking return of Christina Ricci as villainous Nevermore teacher Marilyn Thornhill. Unfortunately, the reunion was short-lived, as Thornhill soon met her end for real in Episode 4. More from TVLine Wednesday's Stalker Is Revealed in Episode 2 - EPs Explain How the Show's Fandom Served as Inspiration Wednesday Gives Xavier a Mysterious Exit in Season 2 Premiere: 'We Have Seen the Last of Him,' EPs Confirm Casting News: Molly Shannon Reunites With Will Ferrell, Trying Adds 5 and More During an especially chaotic riot at the asylum, Thornhill was reunited with Tyler, immediately attempting to convince him that Wednesday is his real enemy. The Hyde hottie was kind enough to give his master a five-second head start before eventually impaling her with his killer claws. Bringing Ricci back in Season 2 was a no-brainer for the show's producers, but the rest? That was another story. 'It's always a hard choice,' co-showrunner Alfred Gough tells TVLine. 'When you kill off a character like that, you want to make it count. You want it to lead to something, you know, and it definitely does. We established that a Hyde can't really live without a master, so what does that mean? Now you have this unhinged monster out in the world, and what's that going to be? We wanted to make sure that it was an impactful death.' Adds co-showrunner Miles Millar, 'When you kill a character as significant as as Thornhill, it reminds the audience that, yeah, people die in this world. There are serious stakes, and not everyone is going to make it out alive. I think that's an important tonal thing for the show, even though we primarily think of it as a comedy. Hopefully this season is even funnier than the first season, but there are also these moments of high drama and moments of of death.' Were you surprisingly moved by Thornhill's death? Are you disappointed that Ricci's time in the Wednesday universe is over, barring a ghostly return? (Hey, anything's possible!) JD Vance reacts to brutal parody in latest ‘South Park' episode

'South Park' continued with its blistering mockery of the Trump administration in the second episode of the latest season. In 'Got a Nut,' which debuted on Wednesday, the Comedy Central cartoon set its aims on Vice President JD Vance, two weeks after unleashing on Trump in the season premiere. But unlike the White House, which reacted with anger over Trump's portrayal, Vance is taking the high road in his response to the parody of him and the president starring in an episode of the '80s TV series 'Fantasy Island.' 'Well, I've finally made it,' the VP wrote on X Thursday morning, linking to the 'South Park' post featuring him depicted as the MAGA leader's servant, inspired by the show's sidekick character of Tattoo. Trump, in the role of Mr. Rourke — whose resort island in the Pacific promises to fulfill almost any fantasy — becomes so annoyed with Vance that he kicks him off screen. Political theater fans and pundits have been tuned into the Emmy-winning animated series since it skewered Trump in the season 27 premiere, depicting him getting into bed with Satan, who makes fun of the president's manhood. White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers issued a statement after the episode aired, declaring the long-running series is irrelevant and 'hanging on by a thread with uninspired ideas in a desperate attempt for attention.' 'President Trump has delivered on more promises in just six months than any other president in our country's history — and no fourth-rate show can derail President Trump's hot streak,' Rogers said. 'South Park' creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone later gave a cheeky non-apology for mocking the president. 'We're terribly sorry,' Parker said with a deadpan stare during a panel at San Diego Comic-Con.

Some love-seekers abandoning apps for an old-fashioned approach to dating

Cincinnati, Ohio — Ross Rohling and Carlee Berns are like any other couple in their 20s. But what is unusual is that they met in person. "When we tell people that we met at a singles event, they're like, 'No way, they still have those?' I'm like, 'Oh yeah, you should go,'" Berns told CBS News. The couple, who have been together for about 18 months and recently got engaged, met at an event hosted by Date Cincy. It was just the second event put on by Cincinnati natives and childhood friends Paige Brailey and Logan Moore. They launched a matchmaking event series for people who've grown sick of swiping for dates and are looking to connect in person. "It seems like the millennials are the ones who kind of make up the bulk of our events," Brailey said. Millennials, those between the ages of about 29 and 45, were the first to get on dating apps, and the first to get off of them, according to Beresford Research. Gen Zers, the generation between the ages of 13 and 28, use the apps even less, Beresford Research found. "So now there's this craving and this yearning for just, time like this, right, where we're just connecting face-to-face with other humans," Brailey said. At Date Cincy's events, anywhere between 50 and 800 singles show up with a common goal and without the ability to hide who they really are, like some people do online. "You meet them in person, and then it's like, oh, well, we actually have nothing in common, or you're not who I thought you were," Moore said. The dating app Bumble has lost 90% of its value since going public four years ago (source?). Dating and singles events are increasingly popular, with attendance rising by 42% from 2022 to 2023, according to the ticketing platform Eventbrite. "It's probably going to be awkward, just acknowledge it will be awkward," Berns said of the in-person dating experience. "And just go in with an open mind, and who knows, maybe you'll meet someone and go on a first date and it goes well." Rohling and Berns are among the many Date Cincy couples that the group counts among their success stories of love at first sight. "I knew within the first month that I was going to marry her," Rohling said. It's a chemistry that can only happen face-to-face. "It's just part of the human nature," Rohling said. "You get filled with a passion, you get filled with excitement and energy because you feel that chemistry."
