Last walk to dhaba: Fauja Singh ran to heal after son's death; died on way to eatery built in his memory

Time of India5 days ago
NEW DELHI: Fauja Singh, the world's oldest marathon runner, died in a tragic echo of his past - much like his fifth son, who lost his life in a
road accident
. On Monday, the 113-year-old was struck by a speeding vehicle near his home in Beas Pind, Jalandhar.
He was walking across the Jalandhar-Pathankot national highway to visit Kuldeep Dhaba, the family eatery named in memory of his son Kuldeep, who had died in 1994 during the dhaba's construction at another location.
That loss had once broken Fauja, later running became his way of healing and in a tragic twist, his final steps were toward the very place built to remember the son he never stopped mourning.
'He would visit us every 4-5 days and have one chapati with a small bowl of vegetables or dal and a cup of tea.
He would chat with us and those who were around. The last time he visited us was 4-5 days ago.
When other visitors spotted him sitting here, he was always a great attraction, and they would take selfies with him. We always took pride in his presence and that his photo adorned the dhaba,' said Gurdeep Singh, who looks after the eatery.
'I knew him for 40 years and sometimes accompanied him to events. I could not sleep last night.

I believed we were earning our bread and butter with his blessings,' Gurdeep added, breaking down. 'He was very alert and witty. Always unassuming in his interaction with people.'
Beas Pind resident Gurpreet Singh was among the first to reach the spot. 'We rushed towards him. He lay face down. It was only after we lifted him that we saw it was Fauja Singh, the pride of our village. It was a brutal shock. He was badly injured but conscious.
We rushed him to a hospital on the same highway' he said.
Police have since arrested the accused, identified as Amritpal Dhillon, who was detained on Tuesday night from a village in Jalandhar district. He told police he was returning from Bhogpur when the accident occurred. The FIR states that the vehicle was speeding and that the driver fled without offering any assistance—had he stopped and taken Fauja Singh to the hospital immediately, the legend might still be alive today.
The Punjab Assembly on Tuesday paid heartfelt tributes to the global icon. Parliamentary affairs minister Dr Ravjot Singh, who moved a condolence motion, called Fauja Singh 'the world's oldest runner' and praised him for bringing immense pride to the Sikh community through his marathon achievements. Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan remembered him as a spirited soul who, despite his age, inspired generations with his strength, humility, and discipline.

Miscreants posing as kanwariyas to defame yatra will be dealt with: Yogi

1 2 3 4 5 6 Meerut: Miscreants posing as kanwariyas to incite violence and defame the ongoing pilgrimage will face strict action, including public naming through posters once the yatra concludes, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath said in Meerut on Sunday. After inspecting arrangements and interacting with pilgrims along NH-58, Yogi said the administration had obtained CCTV footage of such troublemakers and would hold them accountable. He said miscreants were deliberately infiltrating groups of kanwariyas and indulging in hooliganism to tarnish the image of the yatra. "Troublemakers have resorted to defame this holy pilgrimage. We have CCTV footage of such elements. We will paste their posters after the yatra is over. Any attempt to disrupt the yatra or compromise its sanctity will be dealt with strictly," he said. Demonstrating respect for the pilgrims' faith, Yogi showered flower petals on kanwariyas in Meerut and from a helicopter in other districts of western Uttar Pradesh. "From tomorrow, lakhs of Shiv devotees from various states will carry water in the form of kanwar and perform jalabhishek in various Shiv temples. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like This warming mat is your secret to hot meals without the microwave! crazyproductz Shop Now Undo I heartily welcome all the devotees bringing holy Gangajal from Haridwar," he said. Objecting to a "media trial" of devotees, Yogi said sections of the media were portraying kanwariyas as rioters, which was an "insult to India's heritage". He said social media was filled with videos showing individuals in saffron creating ruckus, ransacking hotels, damaging vehicles and assaulting civilians, and claimed these were not genuine devotees but anti-social elements wearing saffron to malign the pilgrimage. "Where there is enthusiasm and excitement, faith and devotion, some people try to disturb celebrations and defame devotion and faith," he said. "While most devotees uphold the sanctity of the yatra, some anti-social elements are conspiring to malign it. It is the responsibility of every kanwar sangh and every Shiv bhakt to expose such elements. Do not allow them to enter your circle. Immediately inform the administration if you spot such people. " Yogi urged pilgrims not to retaliate if provoked and assured that the administration was fully prepared to take legal action. "No one should take the law into their own hands. The administration is there to act if any such miscreant desecrates the yatra," he said. He said that unlike previous govts that "created obstacles for such pilgrimages before 2017", the current govt respected the faith of devotees. "It is our responsibility to take this tradition forward with the same sacred sentiment," he said. The CM appealed to pilgrims to avoid littering, join cleanliness campaigns and ensure that no river or road was left dirty. "Shiv bhakts should walk with a spirit of public welfare and remain mindful of not causing inconvenience to others," he said. The state, he added, had arranged for drinking water, first-aid stations, lighting, rest camps and other facilities. As a preventive step, UP police have enforced a blanket ban on kanwariyas carrying tridents, hockey sticks or similar objects and on riding motorcycles without silencers. The entire kanwar route is under high-tech surveillance, including over 11,000 CCTV cameras in the Meerut zone, drone-mounted systems and AI-powered crowd detection tools. Over 10,000 women police personnel have also been deployed for the first time to man helpdesks and Shakti booths, with special focus on women's safety during evening hours. Yogi concluded his visit with an aerial inspection of the Meerut–Muzaffarnagar road (NH-58) and Chaudhary Charan Singh kanwar marg. Rajya Sabha MP Laxmikant Bajpai and UP minister of state Somendra Tomar were also present at the occasion.

Man held for murdering daughter by pushing her into canal over ‘affair'

Roorkee: A 55-year-old man from Haridwar was arrested for killing his 18-year-old daughter, who was allegedly in an affair with a man from another caste, by pushing her into the Gangnahar canal in Manglaur, police said on Sunday. Pradeep Dhiman took her to the canal bridge on his motorcycle under the pretext of watching the kanwar yatra and then pushed her into the water on Saturday evening. Some kanwariyas caught Pradeep as he tried to flee and handed him over to police. Officials said the victim, a Class 11 student, was in a relationship with a neighbour's son. Her father, from Haridwar's Daluwala, disapproved of it and sent her to stay with relatives in Roorkee. Despite repeated warnings and his insistence on marrying her to someone within their caste, she refused to relent and continued to secretly meet her boyfriend. SP (rural) SC Suyal said, "Her body was later fished out of a barrage downstream. An FIR was registered against the man under BNS section 103-1 (murder). The accused was arrested and he has confessed to the crime." According to eyewitnesses, the incident took place at the new Gangnahar bridge in Manglaur — one of the busiest places in the area. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it better to shower in the morning or at night? The victim screamed for help, but the canal was deep and its strong current swept her away, he added.

Andhra liquor scam: Chargesheet reveals Jagan Mohan Reddy's role; YSRCP MP Midhun Reddy arrested

Former Andhra Pradesh chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, left, and YSRCP MP PV Midhun Reddy NEW DELHI: Former Andhra Pradesh chief minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy has been named as a recipient of alleged kickbacks in a Rs 3,500 crore liquor scam, according to a chargesheet filed by the state police. The 305-page document, submitted to a local court on Saturday, claims Jagan received a share of Rs 50–60 crore every month during the 2019–2024 YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) regime. However, the chargesheet stops short of naming him as an accused. The court is yet to take cognizance of the chargesheet. "The collected amounts were eventually handed over to Kesireddy Rajasekhar Reddy(A-1). Rajasekhar Reddy would then pass the money to Vijay Sai Reddy (A-5), Mithun Reddy (A-4), Balaji (A-33) who would transfer it to former Chief Minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy. On an average, Rs 50-60 crore was collected every month (during the 2019-24 YSRCP regime)," the charge sheet said, as quoted by PTI. A key witness has reportedly corroborated these transactions. The report labels Rajasekhar Reddy as the "mastermind and co-conspirator" behind the liquor scam, alleging he manipulated the excise policy, replaced automated Order for Supply (OFS) systems with manual processes, and appointed loyalists in APSBCL (Andhra Pradesh State Beverages Corporation Limited). by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Genius Portable Cooler Keeps Your Home Cool & Saves You Money AiraBreeze Learn More Undo The chargesheet states that Rs 250–300 crore was routed in cash for election expenses of the YSRCP, coordinated by Rajasekhar Reddy and ex-MLA Chevireddy Bhaskar Reddy. The laundered money was allegedly invested in land, gold, and luxury assets in Dubai and Africa, via over 30 shell companies. "The accused planned the change in excise policy and also its modalities, to ensure that they would receive large kickbacks, majority portion of such kickbacks was received in cash, gold bullion etc," said the document. A key meeting with distillery owners was allegedly held at Hyderabad's Park Hyatt Hotel in late 2019. Organised by Sajjala Sridhar Reddy (A-6), the owners were reportedly threatened to cooperate with the manual OFS process and pay kickbacks of 12–20% or face order denials. "During the meeting, the owners were intimidated that if they do not accede to their proposals and no orders will be issued to them. Such intimidation for kickbacks by threatening them with no issuances of OFS and thereby receiving kickbacks amounts to extortion," the chargesheet quoted by PTI added. On Saturday, YSRCP MP PV Midhun Reddy was arrested by the special investigation team (SIT) after hours of questioning in connection with the scam. Earlier in May, the enforcement directorate (ED) registered a money laundering case under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and filed an Enforcement Case Information Report (ECIR) to probe the alleged financial crimes. Reacting to Midhun Reddy's arrest, several YSRCP leaders including Botcha Satyanarayana, Perni Venkatramaiah (Nani), Ambati Rambabu, Merugu Nagarjuna, and G Srikanth Reddy issued a joint statement calling it a clear case of 'political vendetta" by the Chandrababu Naidu-led TDP government.
