Kraken Launches Bitcoin Staking via the Babylon Bitcoin Staking Protocol, Unlocking New Reward Opportunities for Clients' BTC

Business Wire19-06-2025
CHEYENNE, Wyo.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Kraken, one of the longest-standing, most liquid and secure cryptocurrency exchanges, today announced the launch of Bitcoin (BTC) staking through a new integration with the Babylon Bitcoin staking protocol, a Bitcoin-native staking protocol. The integration enables Kraken clients to earn passive rewards on their BTC without bridging, wrapping or lending it out.
Beginning today, Kraken clients can choose to stake their Bitcoin directly from Kraken through an integration with the Babylon Bitcoin staking protocol. The BTC is locked in a vault on the native Bitcoin chain and delegated to secure Proof of Stake networks via the Babylon protocol. Staked Bitcoin rewards are paid in BABY, the native token for Babylon Genesis, the first L1 network to be supercharged by Bitcoin.
'A substantial amount of Bitcoin currently sits idle on our exchange, representing a significant opportunity cost for clients and a missed opportunity for the broader ecosystem,' said Mark Greenberg, Global Head of Consumer. 'With this launch, clients can now earn a return on their BTC while also enabling emerging PoS blockchains to benefit from the economic weight of Bitcoin in order to validate transactions and bolster the security of their networks.'
'Kraken's integration with the Babylon Bitcoin staking protocol shows how trust-minimized, Bitcoin staking can work at scale,' said Clayton Menzel, Head of Business Development at Babylon Labs. 'By anchoring staked BTC on the native chain and delegating it to PoS networks, Kraken clients can finally earn rewards without bridges or wrappers, helping preserve Bitcoin's unmatched security and sovereignty. This launch channels Bitcoin's economic gravity into securing the next wave of PoS ecosystems and marks a major step toward a truly BTC-native DeFi landscape.'
Holders' staked BTC never leaves the Bitcoin blockchain. The staking mechanism is governed by Bitcoin scripts, and staking rewards are handled by on-chain logic on Babylon Genesis, publicly verifiable by users and third parties. The BTC staking protocol also includes cryptographic safeguards to deter and penalize malicious behaviors. Clients can unstake their BTC at any time, with a ~7-day unbonding period before funds are available for withdrawal.
This launch marks a significant expansion of Kraken's growing staking suite and further reinforces the platform's leadership in product innovation. Kraken was one of the first exchanges to introduce custodial staking in 2019, enabling millions of users to participate in earning rewards through its Earn platform.
The BTC staking product is available starting today across all Kraken platform interfaces, including Kraken and Kraken Pro.

Bitcoin Giant Strategy and Coinbase Lead Crypto Stock Slump

Shares in leading publicly traded crypto companies and digital asset treasuries like Strategy (MSTR) and Coinbase (COIN) dropped after the opening bell on Wednesday before rebounding to 1.95% and 0.5% gains, respectively. But over the last month the pair have experienced extended losses, falling nearly 20% and 27% respectively. They're underperforming crypto majors like Bitcoin and Ethereum, which have respectively fallen 3.7% and gained 13.4% over that timeframe. For Strategy, it marks the lowest shares have traded since April. While the drops coincide with a broader crypto market selloff, potentially due to concerns over inflation and other macroeconomic data, crypto-related equities are lagging behind broader indices like the Dow Jones and S&P 500. Both are up about 1% on the month. 'Just like crypto assets, crypto equities can be volatile. Add onto that the broader uncertainty investors are navigating around where tariffs, interest rates, and other macroeconomic factors are headed, and it's a clear recipe for even more volatility,' Bitwise Head of Research Ryan Rasmussen told Decrypt. 'I'd add that crypto equities typically have a high beta to major crypto assets like Bitcoin, so it's no surprise that they've underperformed amid the Bitcoin pullback,' he added. 'Digital asset treasury companies even more so, given their business is inherently tied to the value of the underlying crypto assets they invest in.' By high beta, Rasmussen means that crypto equities, particularly those tied to digital asset treasuries, typically carry a higher volatility when compared to crypto majors It's not just crypto's most established equities that have suffered some recent underperformance. Robinhood (HOOD) briefly fell below $100 before rebounding to $104.53 on Wednesday. The mobile brokerage turned wide-ranging trading app is now down more than 11% from its recent all-time high of $117.70. Crypto Market in 'Fear', But Ethereum, Solana and Chainlink Stay Strong: Analysis Ethereum-focused treasury firms BitMine Immersion Technologies and SharpLink Gaming have bucked the trend by rising on Wednesday, but both are down more than 10% across the last five trading days. A trio of recent crypto IPOs are also down over the last 5 trading days, led by Bullish (BLSH) falling 35% and Circle (CRCL) and eToro (ETOR) dropping 7.5% and 4.8%, respectively. Bullish, the most recent of the bunch, quickly jumped to more than 3x its IPO price of $37 when shares hit the market last week. But it has now pulled back nearly 50% in just a few days of trading, mounting significant losses for any late entrants on IPO day. But Rasmussen said he expects the crypto IPOs to find their footing as the market gap that existed since Coinbase's IPO led to 'considerable pent-up demand for crypto companies.' 'Investors typically get excited about new entrants to the market, and crypto equities are no different,' he told Decrypt, adding that despite the recent downturn, yearly performance points to the fact that investors aren't ignoring established crypto equities. 'Some of these crypto companies—like Coinbase—have proven their resilience, battle-tested in the last crypto winter,' said Rasmussen. 'That's a valuable and important factor for many investors wary of crypto's potential for boom and bust cycles.' Bitcoin, Ethereum Rise After Fed Minutes Shed Light on Rate Cut Dissent

Bitcoin and Ethereum dipped briefly before regaining momentum in the hour after the Federal Reserve released minutes from its July monetary policy meeting, showing that the two dissenting governors on the Federal Open Markets Committee (FOMC), couldn't convince others to join them. "A couple of members preferred to lower the target range for the federal funds rate by 25 basis points at this meeting," the minutes revealed. "These members judged that, excluding tariff effects, inflation was running close to the Committee's 2 percent objective and that higher tariffs were unlikely to have persistent effects on inflation." Following the release, Bitcoin was recently trading at $114,253, up 0.6 over the past hour, and Ethereum was changing hands at $4,347, up 1.2% for the same timespan. The two largest cryptocurrencies by market value had fallen slightly after the release on an otherwise strong day for crypto markets. Federal Reserve Governors Christopher Waller and Michelle Bowman, who's now vice chair for Supervision, have been signaling they're in favor of reducing interest rates sooner rather than later. An interest rate cut would likely buoy the crypto market by freeing up capital for investments. There haven't been two dissenting governors since 1993. The last time one Fed governor offered an objection was September 2024, when Bowman preferred a 0.25% cut instead of the half-point on which the bank settled. But a few weeks after each monetary policy meeting, the Fed releases minutes that shed light onto how the committee arrived at its decision. The next FOMC meeting is in September. Bowman backed her dissent by pointing to inflation "moving considerably closer to the committee's objective, after excluding temporary effects of tariffs, a labor market near full employment but with signs of less dynamism, and slowing economic growth this year." Bitcoin, Ethereum Rise as US Inflation Cools to 2.7% in July The FOMC has long held 2% inflation. The most recent Bureau of Labor Statistics report showed that inflation ticked up slightly in July to a 2.7% annual rate. Core inflation, which strips away more volatile food and energy costs, was hotter at more than 3%. Bowman "also expressed her view that taking action to begin moving the policy rate at a gradual pace toward its neutral level would have proactively hedged against a further weakening in the economy and the risk of damage to the labor market," the minutes added. Although many traders will be watching Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell's speech at the Jackson Hole summit on Friday, the minutes offer a temp check on the governors. There's been an enormous amount of pressure to lower rates from U.S. President Donald Trump. That's included threats to fire Fed Chair Jerome Powell, although the president has yet to act.
