Govt to boost highway Internet coverage with new connectivity drive
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the initiative is part of the government's commitment to the principle of 'where there's a road, there's Internet', aimed at improving connectivity along highways across the country.
'There are several key locations currently under discussion, and my hope is that these can be included in Phase Two of the National Digital Network Plan (JENDELA), as many of these areas will likely require new tower construction.
'So, insya-Allah, we will assist,' he told reporters after visiting the YES Tanjung Asam 4G MOCN Tower during the 'Where There's a Road, There's Internet' programme in Tanjung Asam, Bayan Lepas here today.
Also present were Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, State Infrastructure, Transport and Digital Committee chairman Zairil Khir Johari and Bayan Lepas assemblyman Datuk Azrul Mahathir Aziz, who is also Penang Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker.
Fahmi also announced that the Communications Ministry is aiming to implement a proof of concept (POC) for direct-to-cell technology via Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites in several locations during the third or fourth quarter of this year.
He said the initiative is currently delayed due to technical issues, but discussions are ongoing with LEO satellite operators to address connectivity challenges in remote areas, including maritime zones.
'With this technology, satellites can act as cell towers from space. For instance, someone on the coastline would be able to contact authorities immediately in emergencies, such as drowning incidents,' he explained.
'In places like islands where building 60-metre towers may not be feasible, direct-to-cell satellite technology can be a viable solution,' he added.

KUDAT: The National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI) in Pulau Banggi is set to drive digital economic growth in rural Sabah, according to Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil. He stated that the initiative offers high-speed internet, helping curb urban migration and uplift living standards. 'NADI plays an important role in our efforts to bring Sabah into the digital era by providing internet access, digital skills training and access to information to rural communities that have long been left behind in the development mainstream,' he said during his visit. Pulau Banggi, home to around 20,000 residents, relies mainly on fishing, oil palm, and rubber cultivation. Fahmi highlighted that Starlink technology at the centre delivers speeds up to 100 Mbps, unlocking digital economy opportunities. 'With this facility, the youth of Pulau Banggi no longer need to migrate to Kota Kinabalu or Kuala Lumpur as they can utilise their digital expertise to earn an income here,' he added. The Pulau Banggi NADI project won the WSIS Prizes 2025 in the Capacity Building category. Fahmi noted this global recognition reflects the government's dedication to inclusive digitalisation under the Sabah Maju Jaya policy. Nearly 39,000 SMEs adopt digitalisation through GDPM scheme
JOHOR BARU: Some 38,804 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) embraced digitalisation last year under the Geran Digital PMKS Madani (GDPM) scheme, with approved funding worth RM89.6 million. Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said 2,838 recipients were private clinics and pharmacies, representing about 19 per cent of the sector's operations, based on Malaysian Medical Association data. "This shows the effectiveness of the GDPM in helping SMEs digitalise their services. "This year, we are focusing on the health sector, targeting at least 50 per cent of private clinics and pharmacies," she said after launching the Johor leg of the GDPM Fest 2025 in Permas Jaya here yesterday. The government has approved an additional RM50 million for the programme this year, with RM30 million channelled to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission via telecommunications companies to strengthen SME digital adoption, particularly in healthcare. The GDPM, or the Madani Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Digital Grant, is a government initiative to help SMEs digitalise their businesses. The grant offers matching funds of up to 50 per cent, or a maximum of RM5,000, to eligible businesses to subscribe to digital services. It aims to enhance SME efficiency and competitiveness through the use of digital technology. The effort reflects the government's continued commitment to implementing digitalisation initiatives, a core pillar of the 13th Malaysia Plan. Teo said digital health records would allow patients to access services across clinics without repeating paperwork, complementing but not replacing the MySejahtera application.

13MP: Communications Ministry To Brief MADANI Community, NADI Managers Tonight
GENERAL KUALA LUMPUR, July 31 (Bernama) -- Less than 12 hours after the tabling of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), the Communications Ministry will hold a briefing session tonight for the MADANI Community and National Information Dissemination Centre (NADI) managers to explain the plan's implementation to grassroots policy drivers. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said the online session will involve 1,878 MADANI Communities and 1,099 NADI managers nationwide. He said the session is important to ensure that the efforts and initiatives of the MADANI Government are understood and widely disseminated to the public. 'We believe that by supporting the MADANI Community and NADI managers in spreading the government's efforts and intentions, the people will ultimately benefit. We expect more than 3,000 people to tune in to the briefing,' he said at a press conference after Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim presented the 13MP in the Dewan Rakyat today. Fahmi, who is also the MADANI Government spokesman, said the 13MP, themed "Melakar Semula Pembangunan" (Redesigning Development), reflects the ideals of the MADANI Government under the MADANI Economy framework for the 2026–2030 period. 'We take into account and understand the various opportunities presented by megatrends as well as existing domestic challenges. The 13MP aims to address all dimensions, including economic sustainability, people's well-being, environmental conservation and the strengthening of governance,' he said. He added that the 13MP also focuses on advanced technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), with hopes of positioning Malaysia among the world's leading AI-driven nations within the next five years. Fahmi said the Communications Ministry will focus on developing the creative economy ecosystem and strengthening digital infrastructure through MyCreative Ventures and the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (FINAS), particularly in the animation industry. 'I'm glad to highlight efforts to strengthen the creative or 'orange' economy ecosystem, where we hope several initiatives will enhance competitiveness through the production of high commercial-value works for both domestic and international audiences,' he said.
