Only Fools and Horses and Miami Vice star Mario Ernesto Sánchez dies, aged 78

Independent14-04-2025
Actor Mario Ernesto Sánchez, who appeared in Only Fools and Horses and Miami Vice, has died aged 78 following a 'long and painful illness'.
The Cuban star died in the early hours of Thursday morning (10 April) after succumbing to ongoing health issues, his agent confirmed in a brief statement.
'Mario Ernesto Sánchez died today at 3.03am as a result of a long and painful illness,' he told the South Florida newspaper, Diario Las Américas.
Sánchez was born in San Antonio de las Vegas, Cuba in 1947. He travelled to America at 15 during Operation Pedro Pan, where parents sent 14,000 children from Fidel Castro's Cuba to Miami in the 1960s.
In 1979, Sánchez founded the Hispanic theatre, Teatro Avante, in Florida and went on to appear in Hollywood films, including Invasion USA in 1985 and The Specialist in 1994.
The actor appeared in five episodes of Miami Vice as a variety of minor characters, including a limousine driver. He also appeared in the 2006 Miami Vice film.
Sánchez also featured in the Only Fools and Horses two-part Christmas Special 'Miami Twice', which aired in December 1991.
Most recently, the actor appeared in the TV series Jammerz in 2022. Before that, he starred in the HBO remake of Father of the Bride.
Tributes to the well respected actor were quickly shared online. 'May your soul unite with the source of light and love,' Miami Art Promotion wrote in a statement shared on its social media accounts.
'The outstanding actor and director of Cuban origin Mario Ernesto Sánchez dies in Miami. His tireless work in the Cuban exile theatre, since his early arrival in the United States, has earned him the valuable work of Teatro Avante, a group he founded, as well as the Miami International Hispanic Theatre Festival, with almost 40 years of experience,' the statement continued.
"Peace to his remains and condolences to his loved ones and friends. It also serves as a well-deserved tribute to his extensive career.'
In 2014, Sánchez was awarded the Legacy Award in Los Angeles for 'outstanding individuals whose lifelong commitment to Latino Theater in the United States and Latin America will have a lasting impact on the field'.
In his acceptance speech, Sánchez said: '[It means] that we have done a lot but we have a lot more to do. That's all it means. I'm humbled by it but at the same time I'm very proud.'
He added: 'But I always feel we haven't done enough. We still need to create more interest in the residents of Miami for theatre. That's what we are still lacking.
'Don't misunderstand me, I'm happy we are getting this award and it belongs to everybody who has helped Teatro Avante and the International Hispanic Theatre,' he continued. 'But I have to be honest. I think there is more to be done.'
Sánchez concluded: 'Miami is my home. So, I stay and fight, fight for what I believe and what I believe is good for the city. So, whatever it takes, for as long as it takes, I believe in theatre.'
Actress Verónica Abruza said of his death: 'Sad news. Goodbye Mario Ernesto Sánchez. My condolences to his beloved children, family and friends.
'I will always remember how kind you were upon my arrival in Miami; your attention, your chivalry. May your soul unite with the source of light and love.'

On 'Bite Me,' Reneé Rapp punches back

Reneé Rapp was clear on her intentions for her sophomore album, 'Bite Me,' from the start. 'I wanted to love this,' Rapp says. 'I wanted to be able to walk away from this and be so proud of myself and impressed, no matter what anybody else thought.' Her first album, 2023's 'Snow Angel, ' had been an experiment in figuring out her sound (a mix of pop, R&B and heart-wrenching ballads), and assembling a collection of songs that worked together. This album, out Friday, offered the chance to do it again, with an eye toward the way her life had changed in the intervening years. 'That intention, and also wanting to prove it to myself, was really grueling,' Rapp told The Associated Press. 'And also really fun.' The writing process gave Rapp, 25, an outlet to work through the burnout-inducing whirlwind that was her career in those two years. Uncharacteristically restrained in its vocal styling, the album's lead single, 'Leave Me Alone,' is strikingly open — clever zingers allude to her departure from HBO's 'Sex Lives of College Girls,' the media frenzy that surrounded her turn as Regina in the 2024 remake of 'Mean Girls,' and the external pressure she felt to put out more music after the positive reception of 'Snow Angel.' Basically, anything that's been said about her in the last few years? She reframes it, poking fun at her reputation and the industry. 'Leave Me Alone' felt like a proper introduction to the album, Rapp says, and 'Bite Me' — both a warning and a tease — the appropriate title. Paris Hilton and Monica Lewinsky were among the famous faces that teased the album upon its announcement, donning merch emblazoned with the title in bold print. Rapp herself posed in front of a newsstand filled with mock tabloids depicting her as a diva, concealed behind big sunglasses and a fur coat, to promote the second single, 'Mad.' ('That's a Rapp!' the headline read.) 'It really feels just like a time capsule of those two years of my life, a lot having to do with the business and the industry and people's expectations of me,' Rapp says of the album. 'And then also me wanting things for myself and being confused where those two roads diverge.' Rapp's confidence and humor is evident across the album, just as it is on stage — 'I write lyrics in the way that I talk,' she says. Many of the tracks tackle the destabilizing emotions that accompany the beginning and end of relationships, whether platonic or romantic, and how her now-very public career has amplified the challenges of creating, and maintaining, those connections. 'I'm so surrounded all the time, but I feel so lonely, and it feels really heavy and isolating. And I think a lot of that is just being an artist. And I also think a lot of that is just like the nature of like the business, for better or for worse," she says. The can't-be-bothered attitude heard on 'Leave Me Alone' is countered by the ache of 'That's So Funny,' which recounts the end of a deeply affecting, but ultimately toxic friendship in Rapp's signature soaring vocals. That doesn't mean Rapp isn't also having fun. The cheeky 'At Least I'm Hot' features Rapp's girlfriend, the singer and guitarist Towa Bird. 'I love when artists give you a clue into their lives, and the people who make their lives full,' Rapp said. The track, she says, is also just funny: 'Who better to put on that than like the funniest person alive?' The album's mix of emotions — heartache followed by the rush of a new crush, the impostor syndrome that accompanies the thrill of success — is something the AP Breakthrough Entertainer alum has been exploring since her 2022 EP, 'Everything to Everyone.' She wants listeners to feel the conflict, too — and know that they aren't alone in experiencing it. In June, Rapp served as a grand marshal of the World Pride parade in Washington, D.C., alongside Laverne Cox and Deacon Maccubbin. 'It can be difficult to feel resilient and empowered as a queer person,' Rapp said. 'Because World Pride was in D.C., I was like, well, I can't not be there.' She recalled a conversation with Cox, who dispelled some of Rapp's fears of coming off as self-important in the role by emphasizing the power of showing up, and showing face. 'Right now, when everything is so under attack, which it pretty much always is, it feels like that's the time to be really loud.' Rapp will launch the North American leg of her 'Bite Me' tour at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheater in September before making stops at New York 's Madison Square Garden and as a headliner at the Toronto stop of the All Things Go Festival. She'll tour Europe in March. As she readies for fans to hear the album, she hopes it offers them some reprieve. 'I hope that the weight of the world doesn't feel as massive,' she said. 'It's really easy to obsess over everything and be constantly lost in your head.' Giving them a glimpse into hers, she hopes, is empowering — and fun: 'It's just, it feels like a big party that like everybody wants in on.'

Tom Cruise and Ana de Armas appear to confirm romance with holiday PDA

After months of whispers and well-angled paparazzi photos, Tom Cruise and Ana de Armas appear to have confirmed their relationship. The 63-year-old Top Gun star and the Blonde actress., 37, were spotted over the weekend enjoying a quiet escape in the Vermont countryside. While neither has publicly commented on their relationship, the relaxed PDA during their July 26 outing – and a string of increasingly couple-coded appearances this summer – suggest that the pair are more than just creative collaborators. Cruise, dressed in navy from cap to sneakers, was seen clasping de Armas' hand as they walked near her Vermont home. The actress, casually chic in a white T-shirt and black flared jeans, matched his laid-back energy, ponytail in place and sneakers on. It's a subtle but telling shift from their earlier public sightings – which often came with plausible deniability. Romance rumors first swirled in February when the two were photographed dining in London – reportedly alongside their agents, who insisted the meeting was strictly professional. At the time, a source described the atmosphere as 'friendly, not flirty.' But that tune quickly changed as Cruise and de Armas were spotted together again, from birthday parties to park strolls and even a yacht trip in Spain. Their most high-profile cameo came just days before the Vermont trip, when the duo were seen at Wembley Stadium enjoying Oasis' reunion concert. Though they stayed in the background, eagle-eyed fans caught them on camera. While the romance may be blossoming in real time, so is their professional partnership. De Armas recently confirmed she's working on several projects with Cruise, including the forthcoming supernatural thriller Deeper, directed by Doug Liman. More Trending Cruise, whose high-octane filmography has spanned decades, is no stranger to high-profile relationships. He was previously married to Mimi Rogers, Nicole Kidman, and Katie Holmes, and has three children. De Armas, meanwhile, has kept her private life relatively low-key since her much-publicized breakup with Ben Affleck in early 2021. More recently, she was linked to Manuel Anido Cuesta, the politically connected Cuban executive. While it remains to be seen whether Cruise and de Armas will make things red carpet official, their recent Vermont retreat makes it appear as though things are getting serious. Got a story?
