Russian attack on Ukraine capital kills one, wounds more than 40

KYIV, Ukraine — Russia carried out drone and missile strikes on Kyiv early Thursday, killing one person and wounding more than 40, with damage caused to the children's ward of a hospital as well as a school, government officials said.
The attacks targeted at least 10 locations around the Ukrainian capital, the city's military administration said on Telegram.
"Tonight, the enemy attacked the capital with missiles and drones. Sviatoshynsky and Solomyansky districts suffered the most. In total, as of 6:30 am in Kyiv, 1 person was killed and more than 20 were wounded," Ukraine's interior minister Igor Klymenko said on Telegram.
"The number of wounded in Kyiv has increased to 43. 26 of them were hospitalised in the capital's medical institutions," Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko said in a post.
The windows of a hospital ward for children in Shevchenkivsky district were blown out by a shockwave, Klitschko said.
Buildings were also damaged in the Golosiivsky district, including a school and kindergarten, he added.
One of the capital's higher educational institutions was hit in the attack, according to the state emergency service.
It comes on the heels of a Russian strike on a military training camp, which killed at least three Ukrainian soldiers on Tuesday.
Kyiv has been trying to repel Russia's summer offensive, which has made fresh advances into areas largely spared since the start of the invasion in February 2022.
The Kremlin has come under intense pressure to end its war on Ukraine, now in its fourth year, with US President Donald Trump issuing a 10-day ultimatum to act or face sanctions.

U.S. envoy meets Putin in last-ditch bid to end Ukraine war

ALBAWABA—In a high-stakes diplomatic mission, U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff arrived in Moscow on Wednesday for urgent talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. This was just 48 hours before President Donald Trump's deadline for the Kremlin to halt its war in Ukraine or face a new wave of sanctions and secondary tariffs expires. Upon his arrival, Witkoff was received by Kremlin special representative Kirill Dmitriev. Russian state media released footage of the two walking together in Zaryadye Park, flanked by aides and security personnel. The Kremlin later confirmed that Putin and Witkoff held a closed-door meeting, sharing video of the leaders shaking hands, though no immediate discussion details were disclosed. Though officially Special Envoy to the Middle East, Witkoff has played an increasingly prominent role in Trump's foreign policy and has made several trips to Russia since the president took office in January. His last visit, in April, focused on reviving direct peace negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv. The timing of this latest trip is crucial. Trump has warned that unless Russia halts its military operations by Friday, the U.S. will impose a new round of sanctions, including so-called "secondary tariffs" that would target Russian trade partners such as China and India. Also Read Will Netanyahu fire the IDF chief over Gaza strategy standoff? 'Putin will stop killing people if you get energy down another $10 a barrel. He's going to have no choice, because his economy stinks,' Trump said in an interview with CBS on Tuesday. Asked what message Witkoff carried to Moscow, Trump was blunt: 'Get a deal where people stop getting killed.' Despite Trump's threats, he has acknowledged Russia's resilience under pressure. 'They're wily characters,' Trump remarked over the weekend, noting Russia's ability to evade past sanctions. Publicly, the Kremlin has downplayed the threat of sanctions. However, according to Russian officials cited by Reuters, Putin is privately concerned that defying Trump could cost him a rare chance to reset relations with Washington. The meeting with Witkoff, captured and released by Kremlin media, underscores Moscow's urgency regarding the talks, even as the world waits to see whether diplomacy will prevail or tensions escalate.

ALBAWABA- The Yemeni Armed Forces, led by Ansar Allah (Houthis), announced the launch of a hypersonic ballistic missile named Palestine-2, targeting Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv. In a televised statement on Monday, Houthi military spokesperson General Yahya Saree confirmed the strike, claiming it caused widespread panic, forcing millions of Israeli settlers into shelters and disrupting air traffic. بيان القوات المسلحة اليمنية بشأن تنفيذ عملية عسكرية استهدفت مطار اللد في منطقة يافا المحتلة وذلك بصاروخ باليستي فرط صوتي نوع فلسطين2.بتاريخ5_8_2025م — العميد يحيى سريع (@army21yemen) August 5, 2025 General Saree said the operation was carried out in direct retaliation for the storming of Al-Aqsa Mosque by extremist settlers under the protection of Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir. Russia ends missile moratorium amid escalating tensions with U.S.

Published August 4th, 2025 - 04:49 GMT The move comes just two days after a sharp escalation in rhetoric between Russian Security Council Deputy Chair Dmitry Medvedev and U.S. President Donald Trump. ALBAWABA- Russia announced on Monday that it no longer considers itself bound by its self-imposed moratorium on deploying land-based intermediate- and short-range missiles, citing what it called the "actual deployment" of similar U.S. weapons in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region. In a statement published on its official website, the Russian Foreign Ministry said: "Due to the fact that our repeated warnings in this regard have been ignored, and the situation has developed towards the actual deployment of U.S. land-based intermediate and short-range missiles in Europe and the Asia-Pacific region, the Russian Federation recognizes that the conditions for maintaining a unilateral moratorium have disappeared." — Sputnik Arabic (@sputnik_ar) August 4, 2025 The move comes just two days after a sharp escalation in rhetoric between Russian Security Council Deputy Chair Dmitry Medvedev and U.S. President Donald Trump. Medvedev threatened that Russia could target the United States directly, rather than Ukraine, due to Washington's continued supply of arms to Europe. Tensions had already been on the rise after Trump, during a recent visit to Scotland and a meeting with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, stated that Russia should be given just 10–12 days, not 50, to end the war in Ukraine. The latest developments reflect a deepening standoff between Washington and Moscow, with many analysts warning of a return to Cold War-style posturing that could spiral into direct confrontation. © 2000 - 2025 Al Bawaba (
