KCK police help remove six cars from ravine after flooding
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Clean-up continues after dangerous flooding in the Kansas City area following storms earlier this week. Kansas City, Kansas saw upwards of 10 inches of rain in just 12 hours late Wednesday night and early Thursday morning. Many of the issues stemmed from heavy rain meeting clogged storm drains in low-lying areas. On Friday, Kansas City, Kansas Police Department (KCKPD) Community Policing Officers assisted Alandon to near N. 29th Street and Freeman Avenue. KCKPD said none of the cars had anyone inside and no injuries were reported as the swift-moving water lifted them from a parking lot and carried them into the deep ravine. Woman hangs onto tree after being swept away by floodwater in Kansas City, Kansas
KANSAS CITY, Kan. — The Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department reports Thursday they received 89 calls for service, 40 of them being water rescues, in just seven hours due to severe weather in the area overnight. One of the 40 water rescue calls included a woman being washed away by floodwater near a trailer park in KCK. The woman was clinging to a tree in a creek when rescued. FOX4 Forecast: Cloudy & mild after heavy rains KCKFD says that the 60-year-old woman was living in a camp near Hillside Crossing trailer park in the area of N. 63rd Terrace and State Avenue when she was swept into a nearby creek. She managed to grab onto a tree, keeping herself above water until the water levels receded. KCKFD says that's when she was able to climb out of the creek and return to the park. Despite the dramatic incident, KCKFD says the woman was evaluated at the scene with minor scrapes on her arms. The woman declined further treatment, as well as transport to the hospital. Around eight inches of rainfall were recorded in KCK as of Thursday afternoon. Most of the Kansas City metro was under severe thunderstorm and flash flood warnings until early Thursday morning. Businesses in Kansas City, Kansas working to recover after recent flooding
KANSAS CITY, Kan. – Some Wyandotte County businesses continue to recover after Wednesday night's thunderstorm. As much as 10 inches of rain fell on Kansas City, Kansas, causing flash flooding in multiple locations. Heavy rain from Wednesday night's storm delivers at least two inches of water that got inside the group's building off N. 55th Street and Parallel Parkway. Flash flood water ruined floor tiles and drywall inside the shelter's cat center. 'It's quite a thing to not have this in the community,' Sydney Mollentine, the Humane Society of Greater Kansas City's CEO, said. Mollentine and her staff relocated all the animals who are usually in the building's cat area, but thousands of dollars in cat litter and food are ruined. The humane society's center for dogs remains open and undamaged. KCK police help remove six cars from ravine after flooding 'Right now, we are in survival mode. We are trying to do the best we can with what we have, but we also know this is a really big financial burden that prevents us from continuing the life-saving work that we need to do,' Mollentine said on Friday. 'Inch by inch, life's a cinch. Yard by yard, life is hard. A little bit will go a long way here. They're kind and gracious and they run this very well,' Jamie Smith-Hennessey, a humane society patron encouraging others to contribute, said. Meanwhile, the staff at Big Dawg's Bar in KCK vow to reopen soon. For the time being, a small crew of employees and friends are working to clean up a big mess, after Wednesday night's storm nearly ruined the popular bar. 'It is bad. Everything is ruined, basically,' Karen Lawrentiew, the bar's friendly bartender, said. On Friday, employees used power tools and shovels to remove the barroom's floors, which are still soaked. The Restaurant KC, which sits next door on Kaw Drive, has a sign on its door indicating its also closed until further notice. 'It's devastating. I don't have a job to come to right now. We're cutting all the floor up right now and getting it loaded into a truck,' William Ogden, one of the cleanup crew workers, said. 'It's kind of a big job.'
