Tom Sherry keen to capitalise again on opportunity in The Coast

After a lucky recent escape, jockey Tom Sherry is looking to again make the most of his opportunity in the $500,000 The Coast.
And he believes the in-form Depth Of Character is the right horse to give him back-to-back wins in the feature race on the annual Gosford standalone program on Saturday.
Sherry won the 1600m race for three and four-year-olds last year on Magnaspin, for Victorian trainers Leon and Troy Corstens, when the meeting was transferred to Newcastle.
The city program is back at Gosford this year after renovations to the track. Since racing has returned there, two meetings have been abandoned because of horses slipping on a problem area on the home turn, but a successful race program on April 25 has paved the way for Saturday's feature card to remain at Gosford.
Sherry scored his second-biggest prizemoney win, after the 2023 victory on Unspoken in the $2 million Five Diamonds, when Magnaspin surged late on a heavy Newcastle track last year.
'It's obviously a standalone meeting, and it's always good to win the features in front of a good crowd. They are always good to pick up,' Sherry said.
This year he is reuniting with the Annabel and Rob Archibald-trained three-year-old Depth Of Character, which is coming off successive wins at Eagle Farm, including the group 2 Queensland Guineas (1600m) last Saturday.
Drawn well in barrier six, Depth Of Character was a $4.20 Sportsbet chance in the headline race and Sherry was hoping he could bring that form back to NSW.

Aussie teenager Archie Wilson wins over Nebraska after breaking down while missing family in press conference

Australian teenager Archie Wilson has won over the University of Nebraska as he embarks on a college football career as a punter in the US. But the sudden move from Melbourne to a foreign city has hit hard, with the 19-year-old former Aussie Rules junior breaking down as he spoke of missing his family. Watch the video above: Aussie teenager Archie Wilson breaks down after leaving family for college. 'That part's hard. I mean... I'm sorry,' Wilson said as he paused his press conference. 'I love them a lot. I got two little brothers, and my mum and dad. That's the tough part about being here. I love them a lot and I miss them.' Wilson said the transition has not been too difficult otherwise. But on the positive side, Wilson said his nearest and dearest are already locked in to head over to Nebraska for the start of the season. 'They know this is what's best for me,' he said. 'It's good I can still talk to them plenty over the phone. They're coming here to see the first few games, so I'm looking forward to that.' Wilson was plucked out of Prokick Australia after special teams coordinator Mike Ekeler sought a similar skillset to the Aussie punters who played under him at the University of Tennessee. The Victorian can kick equally well with both feet, a talent honed after suffering a broken ankle as a junior footy player but still wanting to train. 'He's going to be a damn weapon,' Ekeler said. 'I've known about him for quite a while, and absolutely, positively everything about him was what we were looking for.' The Aussie also aced his freshman challenge of performing a song — Piano Man by Billy Joel, in his case — during a team meeting. 'I went up and smashed it, I'm not going to lie,' Wilson laughed. The performance convinced Nebraska coach Matt Rhule that Wilson is 'just the most interesting man in the world to me' — alongside his on-field efforts. 'I've never enjoyed (watching) punt periods in my life, but it's my favorite period of practice right now,' Rhule added. 'I just could watch Archie punt all day. I've never seen anything like it, so it's like watching a YouTube short. The guy's amazing.' Wilson's teammate Jacory Barney Jr said he was also fascinated by the Aussie's obsessions off the field. 'That guy, he's amazing,' Barney said. 'He just walks around the facility all day just like hitting the ball, and I'm like 'Arch, bro, is this all you do?' He's like 'this is all they do in Australia'. 'He sleeps with a football, he's just kicking the ball all day, and that's all he knows is punting. So I love him. We get extra work all the time, that's my guy.' The punter looks set to play his first game of organised football at none other than Arrowhead Stadium, the home of recent NFL Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs, in a fortnight. 'I'm really excited,' Wilson said. 'I don't normally get too nervous when it comes to things. I mean, this is a whole different level, but I'm more excited. Huge crowd. Arrowhead. Thursday night. It doesn't get much bigger.'

Shane Warne Stand rebuild still on the agenda; MCC members back rules to crack down on card fraud

Construction work to replace the MCG's Shane Warne Stand won't begin any earlier than 2030 or 2031, the Melbourne Cricket Club says, confirming that a slate of major events at the iconic Melbourne institution will impact the timing of the proposed major stadium overall. Plans to rebuild or refurbish the stand – which covers half the MCG and was built in 1992 – have been in the mix for some time, as it had an anticipated lifespan of about four decades and is considered an ageing asset. The Victorian government and the MCC have already completed a feasibility study to determine the future of the 45,000-seat stand – previously known as the Great Southern Stand – which caters for nearly half the stadium's capacity. MCC chief executive Stuart Fox told the club's annual general meeting on Tuesday night that the Warne stand overhaul would 'certainly be challenging' and would require additional public and private funding support as the club 'wouldn't be capable of doing that on our own'. This masthead reported three years ago that the Victorian government, emboldened by its agreement with the AFL to host every grand final until 2057, would be expected to foot the majority of the bill. The MCC has recorded a net profit of $38.35 million for the financial year ending March 31. The latest result came after the club posted a net profit of $32.1 million last financial year. The club has also reported having cash reserves of nearly $80 million. Loading Fox and MCC president Fred Oldfield told the meeting that the project remained a high priority. 'We've done the initial work on the Shane Warne Stand, and that was in conjunction with the Victorian government,' Fox said.

Fremantle Dockers ‘undervalued' in AFLW competition as Victorian teams favoured by bias

The Vic Bias is real. That is, according to leading commentator and former AFLW star Kate McCarthy, who believes Fremantle are 'undervalued' in the competition despite winning a final last year. Just days out from the start of the 2025 season, the Dockers are far from the bookmakers' darling for the premiership, paying $34, according to TABTouch. It comes after not a single club captain predicted Fremantle would win the grand final this season, with reigning premiers and heavy flag favourites North Melbourne receiving 10 votes. WATCH FREMANTLE V PORT ADELAIDE AT 2PM SUNDAY ON SEVEN AND 7PLUS 'I hate it but it exists, the Victorian bias, for sure,' McCarthy told The West Australian. 'Coming from Brisbane myself, it's very evident and I think the only reason we see sort of less of that is because of the powerhouses that Brisbane and Adelaide have been in the women's comp as well. 'And that's no disrespect to North Melbourne, they absolutely deserve to be the premiership favourites, considering what they did last year, and a ball hasn't been bounced yet for 2025. 'But I think Fremantle have been definitely a little bit undervalued from the wider media. 'They did have a number of injuries last year, and I think what Lisa Webb is building at the Fremantle Dockers is something that's very special.' Fremantle's best-ever player Kiara Bowers is set to make her highly-anticipated return against Port Adelaide on Sunday after missing last season due to pregnancy. The four-time club champion, three-time All-Australian and 2021 best and fairest winner will also play her 50th game for the club. Captain Ange Stannett, who did not play a game in her first season as skipper following an ACL injury, is also set to return in another huge boost for the Dockers' flag hopes. 'I'm really looking forward to actually seeing their progression from last year to this year,' McCarthy said of Fremantle. 'Obviously had a number of injuries to their forward line on the run, which is really hard to cover mid season. 'Getting Kiara Bowers back is a huge one, she's pretty irreplaceable. I think they're going to be really competitive. 'And they showed last year that their best is good enough to match it with some of the best teams in the competition.' Star ruck Mim Strom is firming for another huge season following a maiden All-Australian blazer. McCarthy said the reigning club champion, who led the league for hit-outs in 2024, had 'weapons that were pretty hard to stop'. 'No matter how much homework you do into Mim and her ability, either at the rough contest or around the ground, it's going to be pretty hard to stop her,' she said. 'And as we see key position players, they do take a little bit of time to develop and she's still really young, so I only see her game improving year on year from here out.'
