For the first time, you can now get a Certified Re-Newed foldable directly from Samsung

Phone Arena2 days ago
The Certified Re-Newed program was created to give buyers a more affordable way to own a premium Samsung phone while maintaining the reassurance of manufacturer quality. Samsung says that under this program every device is inspected by their own specialists, repaired if necessary with 100% genuine Samsung parts, and fitted with a certified new battery. Each phone comes with a one-year manufacturer warranty, ensuring buyers have the same after-sales support they'd expect with a new device.
Until now, the program had focused on Galaxy S series and other non-foldable models. By bringing the Galaxy Z series into the mix, Samsung is extending its value-oriented option to one of the most expensive categories in its lineup. Foldables have traditionally carried a high entry price, which has been a hurdle for customers curious about the technology but hesitant to invest over $1,000 on a first try.

The Certified Re-Newed versions of the Galaxy Z Fold 5 are available exclusively through Samsung's website in Phantom Black for $1,169 (256GB) or $1,219 (512GB). The Galaxy Z Flip 5 is available in Graphite, starting at $649 for 256GB and $699 for 512GB. These prices reflect savings of several hundred dollars compared to buying new, potentially opening the door for more users to experience a foldable without paying full retail.

Including foldables in an official refurb program signals Samsung's growing confidence in the durability of its newer designs. It also stands apart in the U.S. market with this move, as Apple's refurbished store offers certified iPhones and iPads — but of course, no foldables as the company hasn't made one yet.
Still, even with the discount, Certified Re-Newed foldables remain premium purchases. Some shoppers may opt for a new mid-range phone with a strong camera and battery life at a similar or lower price, sacrificing the novelty of a foldable screen. But for those eager to try the technology without committing to a brand-new model, the program offers a safer and more affordable entry point.

This underrated Google app just got its Material 3 Expressive makeover

Google has been busy, busy, busy giving its Android apps Material 3 Expressive makeovers. I have to say that, for the most part, these makeovers have been well changes made to the UIs of these apps have made them easier to use, more useful, and in many cases, the Dynamic Color feature brings in the main color theme from your phone's wallpaper improving the look of the app. The Google Contacts app is now getting its makeover. The update is rolling out now via the Google Play Store. Material 3 Expressive makeover of the Google Contacts app. | Image credit-PhoneArena The new look Contacts app has a bottom bar that is shorter, although the three tabs, Contacts, Highlights, and Organize, remain the same. Pressing on any of the three tabs reveals a major UI improvement as each name is now in an easier to see rounded container, making it easier to see exactly which name you are clicking on. Previously, there was no clear-cut separation between the names of the contacts. Each individual contact also gets a card with a giant avatar and the name of the contact underneath. Directly below the contact's name are four options: The big change to this card with the makeover is that the names of these four actions are now placed inside a pill-shaped field. Previously, the four actions were placed inside of a simple circle. The new look has been found on version 4.6.1.x of the Google Contacts app. To see which version of the app is running on your Android phone, tap on Settings > Apps > See all xxx apps . Scroll down to Contacts and tap on it to visit the Google Contacts App info page. Scroll down to the bottom of the page to see the version of the app installed on your device. My Pixel 6 Pro running Android 16 QPR1 beta 3.1 does have the refreshed version of the Contacts app. The Google Contact card is also given a little makeover. | Image credit-PhoneArena The Material 3 Expressive refresh for Google Contacts might not be the most jarring. Nor is the Contacts app the most heavily used app on your handset. Still, with all of this in mind, Google still worked hard on this makeover; it is enough of an improvement to make the Contacts app more useful and easier for users to employ. Oppo Find X9 Ultra could have the same main camera sensor as the Galaxy S26 Ultra

Vlad, 16 August 2025 The upcoming Oppo Find X9 Ultra has already been rumored to sport a new 200 MP main camera, and today prolific Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station has shed light on which sensor it will use. It turns out it's the one that Sony is developing - with 200 MP resolution and a 1/1.1" type size. That's not quite 1-inch type, but pretty close. Oppo Find X8 Ultra Intriguingly, Samsung has been rumored to have chosen this exact sensor to use in the Galaxy S26 Ultra's main camera. If all of these rumors pan out, we'll have an interesting situation next year when both the Galaxy S26 Ultra and the Find X9 Ultra arrive, as they will compete against each other while using the same main camera sensor. Well, in theory at least - if the Find X9 Ultra isn't officially sold outside of China (and that's definitely not outside the realm of possibility), then given Samsung's minuscule market share in China, the two won't really compete head-to-head anywhere. Anyway, the Find X9 Ultra will launch after the Chinese New Year (which falls on February 17). DCS says it might arrive a little bit sooner than its predecessor, which was unveiled on April 10, so if we were to bet we'd go with an unveiling sometime in March. Source (in Chinese)
