Alouettes' thrilling comeback win over Argos tempered by injury to QB Davis Alexander
Article content
But the euphoria will be quickly tempered with the realization that starting quarterback Davis Alexander reinjured his hamstring and likely will be sidelined indefinitely, yet again. The Als have won four games with Alexander, but they've lost two without him. And that's a sobering statistic that's difficult to ignore.

Alexander returned to the roster Thursday night at Molson Stadium against the Toronto Argonauts after missing two full games with a left hamstring injury sustained during the third quarter in Edmonton on June 19. And for almost three quarters, Alexander looked like a guy who was playing his first game in nearly a month.

But Montreal overcame an 18-point third-quarter deficit, scoring the game's final 19 points, for an electrifying 26-25 victory over the defending Grey Cup champions before 19,354 spectators.

The comeback began with a 10-yard touchdown pass to Cole Spieker — on third down no less — in the final minute of the third quarter. A three-yard run by tailback Sean Thomas-Erlington at 6:36 of the final period pulled the Als to within five points following an unsuccessful two-point convert.

Alexander then provided the winning margin on a 10-yard bootleg with 1:46 remaining — but grabbed his left hamstring as he crossed the goal line. It was similar to how he was originally injured in Edmonton, running to his right on a passing play.

It's almost certain Alexander won't play next Thursday, when the Als travel to Calgary. And while this victory moved Montreal (4-2) into first place in the East Division, can the team win if Alexander is sidelined indefinitely? Head coach Jason Maas said — assuming Alexander doesn't play against the Stampeders — McLeod Bethel-Thompson will be the starter. With the 37-year-old veteran behind centre, the Als lost to Hamilton and B.C.

'I don't think anybody wants to lose their starting quarterback, ever,' Maas said. 'Davis gives us everything. He gave us everything right to the end tonight. We'll have to evaluate him and get him right, because I really don't want him playing again until he is right. We'll do everything in our power to make that happen. But we have guys behind him for a reason. You have to believe they're going to get the job done and they're going to do the job that's asked of them. That's why they're here. We're not just one guy. We're a full team. The next guy has to step up.'

Philip Zinckernagel makes history as Fire blank Montreal
(Photo credit: Brett Davis-Imagn Images) The Chicago Fire won their seventh match on the road of the 2025 campaign, with a 2-0 victory over CF Montreal on a rather temperate summer night at Stade Saputo. Midfielder Philip Zinckernagel tied a league record when he provided the assist on Chicago's second goal, recording a goal contribution for a tenth consecutive away match. Chicago's (9-9-5, 32 points) typical explosiveness and defensive vulnerabilities were on full display at different points, on a night that offered more action at both ends than the scoreline might imply. Montreal (3-15-6, 15 points) finds itself lingering at the bottom of the conference as its inability to finish chances continues to sting. The Fire's devastating counter attack threatened from the get-go. A brilliantly weighted pass from Philip Zinckernagel flew all the way to defender Leonardo Barroso storming up the right flank, whose strike came off the post and into the path of Chicago's leading goalscorer in Hugo Cuypers, who easily tapped it in during the 13th minute. In the 54th minute, Jack Elliott had the time and space to angle a header up and over Montreal goalkeeper Jonathan Sirois to give his team a 2-0 lead off a floated corner from Zinckernagel. Elliot, standing at a lofty 6-foot-6, had little trouble hopping away from diminutive midfielder Victor Loturi, who had the unfortunate task of marking him on the set piece. The home side had a number of close calls from open play, though their best chance might have come off a well-struck free kick from Brandan Craig a few yards outside the box in the 21st minute, whose effort was thwarted by a diving Chris Brady. Montreal's attacking forays into Chicago's third dissipated in the second half, particularly after veteran defender Omar Gonzalez entered the game. With the clean sheet, Brady managed to blank Montreal leading scorer Prince Owusu, who went goalless for the first time in five competitive fixtures. Montreal will be concerned over the state of captain and Canadian international Samuel Piette, who subbed off early in the match with apparent back pain. Fire defender Sam Rogers also left the game in the first half with an injury.

Visiting Chicago Fire scorch struggling CF Montreal 2-0
MONTREAL – Hugo Cuypers and Jack Elliott scored for Chicago and CF Montreal lost its 15th game on the season, falling 2-0 to the Fire at Stade Saputo. Montreal (3-15-6) remains on pace to complete their worst season in the club's 32-year history. Montreal controlled the rhythm of the Major League Soccer match in the opening stages as Chicago (9-9-5) settled into a defensive block and looked to hit back on the counter, using that to open the scoring in the 13th minute. After escaping from several Montreal chances without conceding, two quick passes forward led to Leonardo Barroso breaking away and hitting the post, leaving Cuypers to mop up the rebound. Montreal's response for the remainder of the first half was a microcosm of its season as the squad continued to dominate the ball and pin the Fire back, but could not find any breakthrough. To make matters worse, Fabian Herbers exited the game with what appeared to be an injury for the fourth time this season. Herbers has already missed a dozen games this season due to a variety of injuries. Chicago wasted no time doubling its lead in the opening 10 minutes of the second half when Elliott managed to get on the end of a corner and fire home a header. Thursdays Keep up to date on sports with Mike McIntyre's weekly newsletter. Chicago managed to control the rest of the game rather comfortably, with Montreal getting little more than glancing chances. This is Montreal's first game without a goal since May 31 against the New England Revolution. UP NEXT Chicago: Hosts New York Red Bulls on Saturday, July 26. Montreal: Visits the New England Revolution on Friday, July 25. This report by The Canadian Press was first published July 19, 2025.

Canada's Stefan Daniel wins World Triathlon Para Series race in Montreal
Decorated Canadian Para triathlete Stefan Daniel claimed his first victory of the season Saturday in Montreal. The 28-year-old Calgarian raced from the front of the pack in the swim, bike and run sprint distance to win the World Triathlon Para Series event. Daniel, a six-time world champion and two-time Paralympic medallist, covered the 750-kilometre swim, 20k bike and 5k run in a time of 56 minutes 25 seconds at Parc Jean-Drapeau. The Canadian races in the men's PTS5 classification, which is for athletes affected to a low degree on the leg, a moderate level in both forearms, a high degree in one foot and ankle, or have absence of limbs. Daniel was born with club hands. Montreal was the fourth of five international races in the Para triathlon world series after stops in Devonport, Australia, Yokohama, Japan and Taranto, Italy. World champions will be determined in October in Wollongong, Australia. Daniel finished second to American Chris Hammer, who was third Saturday, on July 12 in Magog, Que. "It was good today. I was totally happy with that one," Daniel said. "I didn't have my best effort last week in Magog, so I tried to just have fun with it today and enjoy being back in Montreal. "My fitness isn't where I want it to be right now in the bike and the run, so the goal was to commit to having a really good swim." Daniel was among the top three men coming out of the water, which put him in good position for the bike around the Gilles Villeneuve Formula One track. "'I'm glad I was able to have a good swim and find the front guys. The three of us quickly pulled away from the field," the Canadian said. "Everyone is close on the bike and there are lots of fast runners in the field now so I just wanted to find the feet of the lead pack. I was able to execute the plan." After earning Paralympic silver in 2016 and bronze in 2021, Daniel was front-running in Paris last year when he crashed out during the bike leg. "It was a bit of a relief for sure crossing the finish line in first. There has been lots of ups and downs since Paris, and it is normal that you experience a bit of a dip in motivation in the post-Paralympic year," he said. "It felt great to know that I was able to battle hard and have a great result heading into this next stretch." Also Saturday in Montreal, Desirae Ridenour of Cowichan Bay, B.C., and Quebec City's Mathis Beaulieu were winners in the Americas Triathlon Cup held in conjunction with Para triathlon. The 25-year-old Ridenour broke the tape in the sprint distance in a time of 57:12. Beaulieu, 20, won the men's race in 51:30.
