REVIEW: The hidden waterside café on popular nature reserve

Yahoo27-04-2025
With summer around the corner, what better time to review my go-to lunch place, situated within a tranquil beauty spot.
The Hide Coffee House is nestled along the waterside of Pennington Flash nature reserve is one of my favourites in the area and it's not difficult to see why.
The Hide Coffee House opened in 2023 (Image: Leah Collins) The coffee house, which is a council-run venture, opened in 2023 as part of a £2.7 million makeover of facilities at the nature reserve, with accessible toilets installed along with upgrades to parking, including electric vehicle charging points.
It's also dog-friendly, making it perfect for those out walking their pooch to pop in for a sit-down.
As someone who lives for a sweet treat, The Hide Coffee House is a haven of delicious choices.
The wildlife-themed venture combines a menu using local suppliers, which imbues it with an authentic feel.
This is one of my favourite places to visit and I often opt to read a book by the water, with a sweet coffee in hand.
The Hide Coffee House is surrounded by beautiful views of Pennington Flash. (Image: Leah Collins) The extensive food menu includes a range of breakfast barms, which include vegan options, a soup of the day, bagels, sourdough toast, pastries, pancakes, waffles and paninis.
The coffee house is popular, especially with the weather warming up. (Image: Leah Collins) There's also Cheshire Farm ice cream, which is particularly popular in the warmer months.
On my latest visit I was delighted at the options for cakes, cookies, brownies and pies.
From a quick glance at the front counter, these included Victoria cronuts, rocky road, berry and yoghurt flapjacks, double chocolate fudge cake, apple and blackcurrant crumble jack and my own personal favourite, Biscoff millionaire slices.
There were lots of options for sweet lovers. (Image: Leah Collins)READ MORE:
Drinks-wise, there are numerous hot and cold options that cater to all age groups. The Mini Egg Easter hot chocolate did stand out to me, as well as the Baileys hot chocolate.
There was an array of freshly made smoothies, milkshakes and of course, iced coffee flavours.
The cafe offered seemingly endless sweat treats! (Image: Leah Collins) In the end, I opted for a lotus millionaire slice and a green smoothie in a bid to remain somewhat healthy.
I was not disappointed, although I will say that the Biscoff slice was one for the ultra-sweet-tooths, so those who don't like too much sugar might be more suited to some of the other (endless!) options.
The lotus millionaire slice was delightful. (Image: Leah Collins) As the weather is warming up, I would definitely recommend a visit to the Flash if you haven't already.
It makes for a lovely family day out, a popular hangout with friends or even if you just want to amble there alone to relax, as I do.
With Pennington Flash formally declared a National Nature Reserve in October 2022, James Winterbottom said that this has been a "key catalyst" for the council to push ahead with developments that will attract people to the Flash while preserving its natural beauty.
The Hide Coffee House is open 9am to 4pm from November to March, and 9am to 7pm from April to October.

Hidden gem is the perfect brunch spot with the most glorious views

In my ongoing quest to find the perfect brunch spot, I literally stumbled on a hidden gem during a visit to Belmont, writes Leah Collins. Lotties, on Belmont Road, is nestled in the picturesque Pennine Moors, just outside the picturesque village of Belmont. Lottie's of Belmont opened in 2018. (Image: Leah Collins) The café, which opened in 2018, offers delicious breakfast, brunch and lunch options, alongside an array of delicious desserts and home made sweet treats - and the most perfect view. Inside, Lottie's features a cosy and ambient vibe, complete with twinkling fairy lights and rustic décor. Outside the windows are views of the Lancashire countryside, rolling hills and all. Lottie's boasts cosy and rustic décor inside. (Image: Leah Collins) Although I was brunching alone, I was instantly put to ease by the friendly members of staff. READ MORE: The place was also bustling with people, but the service was immaculate. My order was taken and my food bought to me in the space of no more than fifteen minutes. I ordered the Mediterranean goats cheese salad and a cherry smoothie. (Image: Leah Collins) I decided to opt for the Mediterranean vegetable and goats cheese salad, with vegetables in herb oil, tossed with a baked goats cheese, salad leaves and topped off with a balsamic glaze. To wash down my salad, I ordered a fresh 'Cherry-poppins' fruit smoothie, which contained sour cherries, raspberry, blackcurrant, mango and bananas. Overall my dish came to a grand total of £16.90 (the salad was priced at £10.95 and smoothie £4.95), with the price backed up by the food's quality. For those who fancy something more substantial, Lottie's offers an array of delicious dishes, including vegetarian, vegan and gluten free style options. American style pancakes, traditional breakfasts, smashed avocado toast, French toast and eggs royale are all but some of the breakfast options. The lunch menu also proves fruitful, offering burgers, chicken quesadilla, vegan curry, pizza style flat breads, sandwiches and wraps. A delightful selection of cakes were also on offer. (Image: Leah Collins) After my brunch, I was tempted to try one of Lottie's homemade cakes, which looked absolutely delightful. There was cherry, blueberry, lemon and Oreo style-sponges, as well as freshly-baked scones on offer, so I was spoiled for choice. The special coffee of the day, the iced popcorn latte, also caught my eye – so I'll definitely be back to sample that this summer! Overall, I was really happy with my experience at Lottie's and would definitely return for a future brunch date and enjoy the glorious views again. It is the perfect spot to dine alone, with company and is situated in one of most beautiful parts of the region.

I've spent 190 hours on long-haul flights. Here are 11 tips for surviving 6 or more hours stuck in economy.

Bring your own food. If you don't bring your own food, you might end up with nothing but pretzels and Biscoff cookies for several hours. Many long-haul flights include meals, but some don't. For example, on my most recent long-haul flight from NYC to Vancouver, British Columbia, with JetBlue, I thought I'd get a complimentary meal on the six-hour journey. But I later learned from the JetBlue website that the airline only serves free meals on transatlantic flights. Luckily, the flight had a complimentary self-service snack pantry, so I avoided paying for a full meal, most of which were $13. But the snacks only curbed my hunger and didn't leave me feeling full, so it's best not to rely on your airline to satisfy your hunger. Pack your own entertainment. The same advice goes for entertainment. Some airlines have been filtering out seatback screens because many people prefer their own devices. And in-flight entertainment systems that take place through apps sometimes stop working during flights. So, I recommend bringing your own screen and downloading films and shows from streaming services you subscribe to. For example, Netflix has this option in the app. Make a long, eclectic playlist for the in-between moments. When traveling for hours on end with multiple layovers, it's nice to have some background jams to keep your spirits up, especially if you're a solo traveler. I recommend creating a long playlist packed to the brim with all your favorite tracks for all your typical moods to make the trip go by faster. And don't sit through your layovers. Speaking of layovers, I suggest staying active through them by walking around and exploring the terminal, if you are able. Whether your layover is one hour or five, you'll be glad you spent the time on your feet once you're seated for your next flight. You should also opt for an aisle seat. Another way to keep moving throughout your trip is to opt for an aisle seat. I had always been a window seat person, but I've completely changed my mind since traveling solo on long-haul flights in recent years. I like to stretch my legs often on long flights, so I prefer being able to stand up and walk around whenever I please without the nervousness that comes with waking a sleeping stranger next to me and asking them to move. You could also opt for a window seat if you know there will be some epic views. I also recommend dressing in layers. This is especially important if you're traveling through extremely different climates. And you never know when the airplane will be too hot or cold for comfort. Pack everything you'd bring to a sleepover in your carry-on. The priorities for your preciously limited carry-on space should go to overnight essentials: basic toiletries and a change of clothes. Otherwise, you'll end up sitting uncomfortably in your filth for hours, and that'll make the trip feel longer. A neck pillow is a must. If you struggle to relax and fall asleep on flights like me, a neck pillow is a total game changer. Economy seats aren't typically very comfortable, so having a soft place to rest my head almost feels like an upgrade. Bring your own water bottle. You're already increasing your carbon footprint simply by being on a long-haul flight, so why not avoid using single-use plastics? Staying hydrated through air travel is crucial, and you'll probably end up buying a plastic bottle if you don't bring your own, at airport prices. So do the world and your wallet a tiny favor. If you can swing it, splurge for premium economy. I've never splurged on premium economy, but I was lucky enough to get a free upgrade on a recent JetBlue flight from NYC to Vancouver. Now that I've tried it, I think I will on my next long-haul flight. The $180 upgrade included a comfier seat with a thick headrest and extra legroom, as well as other perks like early boarding and exclusive snacks. The seat is still in the coach cabin, so I don't think I'd upgrade on a short flight, but I'd book a premium ticket for six or more hours stuck in a seat.

JetBlue Announces Big Change to Onboard Snack Options

JetBlue has a new snack lineup for customers on board, starting later this month. On May 1, the official JetBlue Instagram account confirmed that things will be changing when it comes to passengers' options for mid-flight snacks. "They passed security. They made the cart. They're stealing the spotlight. Coming to a snack cart near you this May," the company captioned a post. JetBlue will soon offer Goldfish, Biscoff cookies, plantain chips, and Chewy granola bars. Many fans reacted in the comments section of the post, letting the company know they are pleased with the new snack choices. "Finally the granola bars are back!!!!" one person wrote. "When I feel a little down, I put on my favourite high heels and dance," someone else added. "This is huge," a third comment read. "I love me some biscoff omgg," a fourth Instagram user said. JetBlue has long offered free snacks onboard, though the options have changed over the years. The company has offered Cheez-Its, Terra Blues Potato Chips, Craisins, PopCorners, animal crackers, and even mini chocolate chip cookies, in the past. News of the updated snacks comes just two days after the company's president teased a partnership with another domestic airline. "If you are a customer in the Northeast and you love JetBlue for leisure, but twice a year you have to go to Omaha or Boise, these are places that you can't earn TrueBlue points on now and when this partnership goes forward, you will be able to," Marty St. George said on April 29, according to CNBC.
