IIM Bangalore to launch UG programmes in Economics and Data Science from August 2026

Indian Express5 days ago
The Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) will launch its first-ever undergraduate degree programmes in August 2026. The institute announced two four-year residential programmes — a BSc (Hons) in Economics and a BSc (Hons) in Data Science — at a press conference held at its Bannerghatta Road campus on Monday. The programmes will be delivered at IIMB's upcoming second campus in Jigani and will fall under its newly established School of Multidisciplinary Studies.
Each degree will offer an optional minor in the complementary discipline along with Business, with the aim of providing students a broad-based education in line with the National Education Policy. Admissions for the first batch will open in September 2025. The inaugural cohort will include 80 students — 40 in each major — and the institute expects the total intake to grow to 640 students by 2031, as infrastructure at the new campus expands.
The initial cohort will be taught by a dedicated faculty group of 15 members, including new hires and existing IIMB faculty.

The new offerings mark a significant expansion for IIMB, which has so far focused exclusively on postgraduate, doctoral, and executive education. The institute's director, Professor Rishikesha T Krishnan, said the undergraduate initiative stems from a need to build early-stage academic capacity and prepare students to think critically and ethically in a rapidly changing world. 'Our vision is to nurture critical thinkers and problem solvers capable of driving positive change,' he said. 'To actualise this vision, we believe it is important to engage young learners early; familiarize them with the intricacies of emerging and unfamiliar markets, and equip them with analytical, contextual, and ethical perspectives.'
The idea of launching undergraduate programmes at IIMB was first discussed over a decade ago and later included in the institute's Institutions of Eminence proposal submitted to the government. The design of the programmes reflects an interdisciplinary approach, integrating economics, data science, communication, ethics, and philosophy, with a focus on applied learning. The curriculum includes two internship cycles, an international exchange term, and a three-year exit option with a degree, in accordance with NEP guidelines.
Eligibility criteria include a minimum of 60% in Mathematics in Class XII and an overall score of 60% or more in Class X. Admissions will be conducted through a national-level entrance exam followed by a personal interview. The age cap is 20 years for general category students and 22 for those from reserved categories, as of August 1, 2025.
The annual fee for the undergraduate programmes has been set at ₹8.5 lakh. However, IIMB has committed to ensuring that no deserving student is denied access due to financial constraints. 'Aid to the extent of 20% in aggregate has already been factored in, and every deserving student will have the opportunity to access financial support,' said Prof Krishnan.
Professor PD Jose, who is overseeing the development of the Jigani campus, said the programmes are structured to offer rigorous interdisciplinary training that combines technical knowledge with a liberal arts foundation. 'We urgently need leaders who are empathetic, insightful, and highly skilled,' he said. 'These challenges demand a collaborative, creative, and data-driven approach.'
Dean of Programmes Professor Mukta Kulkarni said structured placement support will be part of the programme. 'This is a degree being offered by a management school. We are looking at this from a practice and application point of view,' she said. Kulkarni added that students will have access to internships, international partnerships, and curriculum elements designed to align with market demands, with the flexibility to adapt as those demands evolve.
Professor Sourav Mukherji, Dean of Alumni Relations and Development, said the undergraduate programme represents a turning point for the institution. 'We have long been accustomed to working with older learners. We recognize that undergraduate education will require a recalibrated approach,' he said, adding that alumni from IIMB's nearly 30,000-strong global network are actively supporting the initiative.
The institute is also planning programmes in Sustainability and Behavioural Sciences which are slated for launch in the coming years as part of the same undergraduate ecosystem.

Orientation kicks off for Delhi schools to implement entrepreneurship education across classes VII-XII

NEW DELHI: A new chapter in education is unfolding in Delhi govt schools as students from classes VII to XII prepare to learn the fundamentals of entrepreneurship—not as an optional activity, but as a part of their regular curriculum. This initiative is part of the newly launched NEEEV (New Era of Entrepreneurial Ecosystem & Vision) scheme, introduced this year. To get things rolling, all heads of schools across Delhi will participate in an orientation session this week. This training will equip them to effectively implement NEEEV in classrooms and help students combat the potential problems they may face. Aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, NEEEV aims to prepare students for real-world challenges by equipping them with the mindset and tools needed to innovate, ideate, and build sustainable ventures. Under this scheme, students will be gradually introduced to various facets of entrepreneurship, including startup ecosystems, ideation, prototyping, funding strategies, and the fundamentals of launching and managing a business. Weekly sessions will be conducted by school faculty members appointed by the principal, ensuring consistent and hands-on learning throughout the academic year. In addition, schools must establish a School Innovation Council (SIC)—chaired by the principal—to oversee entrepreneurship activities and evaluate student projects. To enrich student engagement, the Delhi govt is introducing two flagship components under NEEEV: NEEEV Dialogue, a biannual speaker series that brings together entrepreneurs, university incubators, and industry experts to inspire and mentor students; and Startup Stormers, a competitive platform for students from Class IX onwards, where selected teams with innovative ideas may receive financial support to transform their prototypes into viable startups. In 2019–20, the Aam Aadmi Party govt introduced the entrepreneurship curriculum to cultivate entrepreneurial thinking among students. A key feature of this programme was Business Blasters, a practical initiative that offered seed funding to students, enabling them to turn their ideas into real-world business ventures.

2k asst profs to be recruited by year-end: Higher edu min

Indore: The state govt will complete the recruitment process for 2,000 assistant professor posts in higher education institutions by the end of this year, higher education minister Inder Singh Parmar said on Saturday. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now He was addressing a gathering at Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyalaya (DAVV) during the inauguration of its 34th teaching department—School of Design—and a new research and consultancy lab established by IET alumni. Parmar said the recruitment is being conducted through the (MPPSC), and more than 1,500 appointments are already in progress. "A fresh notification has been issued with a large number of vacancies, and in some subjects, exams have already been conducted. Further recruitment will follow soon," he said. He added that the National Education Policy (NEP) is not only student-centric but also faculty-focused and is bringing significant change across the country. He also added that NEP introduced significant curriculum reforms, including the inclusion of Bharatiya Gyan Parampara (Indian knowledge systems) in the first-year curriculum. The newly launched School of Design will offer a Bachelor of Design programme from the current academic session, with classes expected to begin in the third week of August. DAVV Vice Chancellor Prof. Rakesh Singhai said courses related to fashion technology would be added soon, and a School of Architecture is also in the pipeline. He added that DAVV is placing a strong emphasis on research, with recent grants of Rs.1 crore and Rs.80 lakh sanctioned to faculty members. The event also marked the launch of a new Research and Consultancy Lab in the Civil Engineering Department, funded by the IET alumni association. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The lab will offer advanced facilities for research and consultancy projects. Along with a large number of students, MLA Madhu Verma, DAVV Registrar Prajwal Khare, IET Director Dr. Pratosh Bansal, Executive Council members, and senior faculty were a part of the inauguration ceremony. During the event, minister Parmar made a crucial statement regarding faculty recruitment, saying, "Universities have been instructed to fill vacant teaching posts. If they fail to do so, we will initiate recruitment through MPPSC here as well." This indicates a potential policy shift in state universities, where recruitment has traditionally been conducted independently through vice chancellors and Raj Bhavan-approved panels. If MPPSC takes over recruitment in universities too, it could mark a significant structural change.
