Former Spartan Jaden Akins impresses during NBA Summer League game on Wednesday

USA Today2 days ago
Former Michigan State Spartans guard Jaden Akins had his best performance of the NBA Summer League on Wednesday.
Akins appeared in his third NBA Summer League game on Wednesday, dropping his best performance with Spartans head coach Tom Izzo in the house. Akins scored nine points, grabbed three rebounds and dished out one assist in the Orlando Magic's loss against the Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday.
Akins was signed by the Magic to their NBA Summer League team, giving him an opportunity to earn a spot in the organization (most likely on their G League team). He went unselected in last month's NBA Draft after a successful four year career at Michigan State.
Akins will have one more opportunity to impress the Magic in a consolation game against the Dallas Mavericks on Friday. That game is scheduled to tip off at 4 p.m. ET and will be televised on NBA TV.

Texas A&M HC Mike Elko is 'blessed' to have four talented running backs

Texas A&M's 2025 running back room will be headlined by the return of senior back Le'Veon Moss, who, outside of dealing with a minor legal brushup this summer, is reportedly "100%" healthy after sustaining his season-ending lower body injury halfway through the 2024 season. However, Moss will be aided by one of the deepest running back rotations in the country with the return of Reuben Owens, Amari Daniels, and EJ Smith. During Thursday's SEC media days appearance, head coach Mike Elko was asked about his 2025 running back room, first praising Le'Veon Moss's 2024 performance before his injury, where he led the SEC in rushing with 765 yards, ten touchdowns, and 6.3 yards per carry. Moss's injury significantly altered A&M's offense, placing additional pressure on starting quarterback Marcel Reed to produce through the air, which was challenging given the team's limited reliable receiving options. It's also important to note that sophomore RB Reuben Owens was also lost for the season, and despite his brief return against Texas and USC in the Las Vegas Bowl, the former five-star was not himself after tearing his ACL during fall practice. How OC Collin Klein will use Owens, who could become a hybrid receiver in certain packages, will determine just how successful the Aggie rushing attack will be. "There's a lot of quality in that group. It starts with Le'Veon Moss, who was on his way to being the leading rusher in the conference and was one of the leading rushers in the nation when he got injured." "We're blessed with four really talented backs, and you need them because, in this conference, they come and go really fast." If Moss can pick up where he left off, Texas A&M is in great shape, while Owens is determined to show the nation that he remains an elite back with first-round NFL draft potential. However, Elko also noted EJ Smith is healthy and back to form, which is good news for those who remember his elite play and versatility during the bulk of his career at Stanford. Former Spartan Jaden Akins posts best scoring performance in NBA Summer League finale

Former Spartans guard Jaden Akins went out on top in his NBA Summer League finale on Friday. Akins wrapped up his stay at the NBA Summer League with his best scoring performance yet on Friday. Akins reached double-digits in scoring for the first time in the five games played, finishing with 11 points, four rebounds and three steals in the loss against the Mavericks. Akins made it clear he was going to go out firing, putting up a team-high 14 shots in the summer league finale. Akins appeared in four of the Orlando Magic's five NBA Summer League games. He finished his stay averaging just under six points per game in his four appearances. We will now have to wait and see where Akins lands for the upcoming season. There is a chance he'll get signed to a NBA G League team, but at a minimum he'll get a shot to play outside of the U.S. should he not land on a G League squad. Which Tigers were named to the 2025 preseason All-SEC team?

See which Auburn Tigers earned a place within the preseason All-SEC squad following another successful SEC football media days. Another SEC football media days has passed, meaning that the new college football season is on the horizon. At the conclusion of SEC football media days at the College Football Hall of Fame in Atlanta, Georgia, the media in attendance voted for the top players in the conference, where two Auburn Tigers made the list. Sophomore wide receiver Cam Coleman and junior defensive lineman Keldric Faulk were named to the preseason All-SEC first team, while transfer wide receiver Eric Singleton and placekicker Alex McPherson earned third-team honors. Faulk was one of Auburn's three representatives at SEC football media days this week, making his second appearance at the event. Faulk recorded 45 tackles last season, with 11 being registered for a loss. Not only is he receiving first-round chatter this preseason, but he is also viewed as one of the team's leaders heading into the 2025 season. Faulk shared his thoughts on his role as a leader during Auburn's time at the podium this week. "It means my team has a lot of faith in me and a lot of faith in how I approach the game, how I lead them and just how much energy I bring to each and every person on that team. I make sure that everybody is up to beat, everybody is ready to work, and make sure we have a very productive game because we can't lose not one of them." Coleman recorded 37 catches for 598 yards and eight touchdowns as a true freshman last season and is expected to have another breakout season. He joins fellow rising sophomore Ryan Williams from Alabama on the first team ahead of another competitive season. Eric Singleton earns third team honors thanks to an impressive resume he brings to Auburn from Georgia Tech, where he led the Yellow Jackets in receiving in his first two years on the Flats. To close Auburn's representation, Alex McPherson makes the third team ahead of a bounce back year. Auburn begins the season on Friday, August 29, at Baylor. The season-opener from Waco, Texas, will start at 7 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on FOX.
